Thank for you for coming on this incredible journey with me. As I wrote the Fallen Brook Series, I realized two things while writing Book 2 (Paper Stars Rewritten).
Thing #1: I decided to let go of all my preconceived notions on how I originally planned to write Elizabeth’s story and allowed my thoughts to wander and change. I thought it made the story more organic and better that way. When I first came up with the story in my head, Elizabeth was going to end up with Jayson at the end. As Book 1 (All Our Next Times) ended and Book 2 began, I came to understand that Ryder was the perfect man for her. Then along came Fallon. I fell in love with his cocky a-hole ways, so made him a focus in Book 3 (Broken Butterfly) to guide Elizabeth on her journey of self-discovery. That’s when it hit me – Thing #2.
Thing #2: Without me noticing it, I was sneaking in bits of my life into the story. Some readers might not understand why I ended the story the way I did, or why I had the various relationships between Elizabeth and her boys change. That’s life, folks. All the twists and turns, all the decisions and choices you make, can change your life in unexpected ways. How you imagine your life to be or how you wish it will turn out is not always what you actually get.
Elizabeth’s life was much like mine. My first real, true love I met when I was young. We made plans to get married. He gave me a promise ring just like Jayson did Elizabeth. We were with each other for ten years. But during those ten years, we both changed. We were young when we first met and had so much life yet to experience and live, and after ten years, I realized that he wasn’t the man I should marry. He was possessive and domineering like Jayson was with Elizabeth. He clipped my wings when I wanted to fly.
Then, I met a man in my senior year of college. He and I instantly gravitated toward one another and became fast friends. After I graduated college, he moved an ocean away, but we remained friends even though thousands of miles separated us. After my relationship ended with my first love, I fell in love with my college friend and we have been happily married for the past sixteen years (add another five years of dating before he proposed). So, it made sense to me that Elizabeth could love two men but only one of them would be her forever love.
You’re probably asking, “If Ryder was her forever love, then why did you kill him off at the end?” My answer is once again, that’s life. We have no guarantees that anything lasts forever. People change, loved ones get sick, friends move away, our children grow up and create lives of their own. When I thought about how Book 3 should end, all I could hear in my head was Fallon saying, “Hey, kitten,” in that cocksure way of his. Fallon was such an important part of Elizabeth’s story and I wanted him to be a part of her life at the end. I wanted to give them a chance to explore that connection they made while on their world adventure. I wanted Elizabeth to have her forever love with Ryder, and then I wanted Elizabeth to fall in love again with Fallon.
Who knows if I’ll ever write Fallon and Elizabeth’s story. It may be something I come back to at a later time. My first inclination is to write Julien and Elijah’s story. What do you think? (Update: By the time Broken Butterfly releases, there is, in fact, going to be Julien and Elijah’s story! The Fallen Brook M/M Duet Series!)
Until then, enjoy life and live for love. Don’t forget to check out That Girl: The Montgomerys (A Fallen Brook Standalone), my new standalone novel coming out in October 2021. Remember all those hypothetical half-siblings Fallon made a joke about to Elizabeth? Aurora’s story is up first in That Girl, with Harper’s story soon to follow in Wanderlost. Julien Jameson will also get his own book, which is aptly titled, Julien.
Now for my thank yous. Thank you to my wonderful beta readers, The Beta Girls: Lisa, Landi, Julia, Kelly, Maegan, and Rita. You guys kept me in stitches and gave me much needed laughs and support as I wrote this series. Lisa, seeing as you were very vocal about being Team Ryder, I hope that the wedding and ending of the series made you happy–well, except for the epilogues which made people cry. I won’t tell anyone.
Thank you to Paul for his fabulous proofing skills and for giving me a guy’s perspective. I know more about drifting cars now that I ever thought possible! Thank you to my son for always being my sounding board when I wanted to discuss storyline ideas. You gave excellent suggestions. Thank you to Ellie at My Brother’s Editor for her excellent copy-editing skills, kind words, and emojis to show me how happy she was that Elizabeth and Fallon met up at the end.
Thank you to all the Jennifers (there are several of you!) and Kelly, Maegan, and Rita for your enthusiastic support of this series. You are why I write! I hope you enjoyed the dedication. And thank you, Reader, for coming on this journey with me and supporting independent authors like myself.
