Tarsier, Councillor “a member of the Ayuntamiento and its expert on architecture and engineering” (II, list); the soiled statue of Councillor Tarsier (I, chap. 4, 204). Tarsier is the one who made the chem bodies for the councillors (IV, chap. 1, 28).
Zoology: a small lemuroid quadruped, Tarsius spectrum, of Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes, and the Philippines, also called “malmag” or “specter.”
Tartaros “a major god, the god of night, crime, and commerce, and the patron of the third day of the week; particularly associated with owls, bats, and moles, and (like Hierax) black animals of every kind” (II, list). Tenebrous (“dark”) Tartaros, first son of Typhon, born blind. The god of sleep and dreams, too (III, chap. 7, 263).
He meets Auk in the tunnels (III, chap. 6, 238), and changes him into Auk the Prophet.
Myth: (Greek) a god of the underworld/afterlife.
Commentary: as the loyal son, Tartaros has the position of Horus in the Osirian drama.
Teasel “a girl at Silk’s palaestra” (II, list). First mentioned (I, chap. 1, 30), she is later attacked by an inhumu (I, chap. 8, 212). Her nickname is “Sel” (I, chap. 9, 218). Last seen in the group heading for the lander (IV, chap. 16, 369).
Botany: a plant of the genus Dipsacus with thistle-like flowers surrounded by stiff bristles; especially fullers’ teasel, D. fullonum, the heads of which have hooked prickles between the flowers and are used for teasing cloth.
Heraldry: as a heraldic bearing.
Fabric: to raise a smooth nap on cloth with or as with teasels; to tease.
Commentary: her nickname, “Sel,” is also the Hebrew word for “shadow,” as well as being the name of the legendary son of English/Welsh hero Selgi.

She provides the best protection against witches (I, chap. 5, 125).
The mirror and/or fish pool at Ermine’s is probably a Thelxiepeia shrine (a smaller version of Scylla’s Lake Limna), and there is a monitor in Hy’s room (III, chap. 8, 299), so Hy comes down because she sees Silk there via monitor. Then Hy has them pose before pool, perhaps being scanned (III, chap. 7, 278).
Myth: (Greek) one of the Sirens, her name means “soothing words.”
theodidact a person taught directly by a god (I, chap 1, 12; IV, chap. 9, 166). Silk does not consider himself one, but Auk the Prophet is certainly one.
theonomy a subject taught at schola (III, chap 1, 24). It is ethics according to gods via sacred text.
theophanies when a god appears in a Sacred Window and is witnessed by one person or many, that is a theophany. The text offers many examples:
• Echinda, Tartaros, Scylla, and Pas, to the Devoted Caddis, two centuries ago, i.e., circa the year 132 (I, chap. 6, 146).
• Pas to Pike, perhaps 55 years ago.
• Pas to Jerboa, about 40 years ago.

Myth: (Greek) one of the Nereids, the sea-nymphs. Married to Peleus, she became the mother of Achilles.
Thyone “a minor goddess, invoked by those who tell fortunes by throwing the lees of wine” (IV, list; IV, chap. 8, 146).
Myth: (Greek) the name of Semele, under which her son Dionysus rescued her from Hades and introduced her among the immortals. Semele was a Theban princess loved by the god Zeus. When Hera learned of their affair, she tricked the girl into demanding that Zeus appear before her in his full glory. The resulting revelation destroyed Semele, but Zeus rescued his unborn son Dionysus from her womb.
Tick “the catachrest Silk rejected before buying Oreb” (IV, list). The name being a catachrestic substitution for the word “talk,” in addition to being a homonym for a vocal “tic.”
As a talking cat, he is perceived by at least one Trivigautni as being an oracle of Sphigx. Tick seems to admit this is true. For a collection of Tick’s sayings, see “Tick Talk” in the Languages of the Whorl appendix.
