It is the five faction-leaders of New Viron—Blazingstar, Eschar, Gyrfalcon, Marrow, and Patera Remora. After they leave, Horn has dinner with his family to explain what he has sworn to do (26). Horn accepts the mission to go to the Long Sun Whorl and return with Silk to New Viron. Sinew thinks the real plan is to bring Pas to Blue (35). Conjunction with Green is due in two years (38). Horn leaves at night, while Nettle, Hoof, and Hide are asleep (42).
• Day 2 Day (44), Horn prays for wind, and at sunset is visited by a leatherskin (chap. 2, 59–61).

As he falls asleep in a field of wheat, Oreb finds him (19). He dreams of returning to Lizard (26). After awakening, he follows a light to a house and meets the nameless couple there (chap. 2, 31). The corn seed man gives him the grains of maize he requests (37), but then threatens him. Continuing along, Silkhorn meets Pig (42). They avoid a godling guarding a bridge (52). One league later, the skylands light up. At Endroad village (chap. 4) they meet Hound and Tansy. Silkhorn goes to sleep. Hound, Tansy, and Pig agree that Horn is really Silk. Pig goes to sleep. Silkhorn has a dream mixing future and past (chap. 4, 83–85).
