Into the Fire Page 25

by Rachael Blok

Iqbal starts to cry. His shoulders shake. It can’t be true. ‘Is it true?’ he asks, his words breaking through his tears. His throat chokes. Tight. ‘Can it really be true?’

‘Yes, yes it’s true. And I’m just so sorry for all of this. The investigation has been ongoing for a while. We’ve still got a long way to go to bring her the justice she deserves.’

Iqbal thinks of the photo he’d been shown – it had been her. He’d wanted to run there, immediately. To shout that he’d seen her. To see her; to free her.

  The sound of a van.

He runs to the front of the building.

‘Stay back, give them a minute.’ The woman in the blue suit is calm. ‘It will be overwhelming.’

Climbing down the steps, helped out by an officer.

  Rajita. His very soul.

Will she want him? Fear, love. He is choked. He is choking.

And walking in, eyes looking everywhere at once, she catches his eye. She smiles. She runs.

  Rajita.
