Romney Pack, West Virginia
Individual Pack Record
Name: Cameron George Slater
D.O.B.: 12/29/1992
Address: Unknown
Contact Details: Unknown
Pack Status: Banished, homosexual, 12/23/2008, proven Omega.
No other details available.
Roger stared at his computer screen in horror. The words just didn’t make sense. It just wasn’t possible. He refreshed his screen and looked at the text again, but they didn’t change. Cameron Slater was an Omega wolf? And he’d been banished from his pack because of it?
Roger gasped as his gut cramped in fear and his wolf snarled showing his displeasure. He checked the date again. Six years his little wolf, his mate, had been without a pack. Six long fucking years. And the poor boy was an Omega. No strength to protect himself, no way of getting access to another pack unless he’d been picked up as someone’s plaything. And Roger didn’t have a clue where he could start looking for him. In six years, Cam could have gone anywhere.
Dropping his head into his hands, Roger cursed the day he walked away from Cameron Slater, from their mating bond and everything that had called him to the boy from the moment he’d seen him. He’d been such a fucking fool.
“You okay there, Roger?” Pearson, Washington Pack’s Alpha and owner of the Bound and Bonded club, poked his head around Roger’s office door, a look of concern on his handsome face.
“Are those new applications giving you some grief?” Pearson continued, stepping into the office now, followed by his mate Dante. “Cos we don’t have to take any new members you know. If you’re not sure someone stacks up, then just reject the application and think no more about it.”
“Er, no, that’s not exactly the problem, Alpha,” Roger said, although his mind was thinking fast. He sure as hell couldn’t lie to his Alpha. The man would scent out any deceit in a flash and Roger would just get himself into trouble.
“What’s the problem then,” Dante said, throwing his large frame into one of the chairs Roger had scattered in front of his desk. “Face it man, you look like shit.”
Roger cast another long look at the screen in front of him, and decided to come clean, with his Alpha and Alpha Mate at least.
“I was checking up on my mate,” he said quickly before he lost his nerve. “My wolf has been getting antsy about going and claiming him, and, well, I’m having a bit of trouble controlling myself. I thought it was time, you know?”
Pearson raised an eyebrow, staring at Roger, hard. “You have a mate? Mr. ‘I never want to find my mate because I’ll never tire of variety’?”
“Yes, Alpha. I have a mate – I’ve just haven’t claimed him yet.” Roger dropped his head in shame. Pearson’s snarky label was right on the button. Roger had told anyone who asked that he had no wish to ever meet his mate and yes, he’d had plenty of variety in sexual partners. The club was full of willing subs that Roger had enjoyed - often.
“I met the boy, like ten years ago, Pearson. But he wasn’t of age yet, so what was I supposed to do? I got hard just smelling him, and there’s no way I wanted to be known as a perv around children. That’s just not right, even if I couldn’t help my own body’s reaction to his scent, and I would never have touched him. So I left him with his pack, thinking that he would be okay and joined up with this pack. I figured he’d be safe and that I could let him have a bit of a life before I went back to meet him and we got pulled into the whole mating thing.”
“But from the state of your face, I take it things are not all right.” Dante didn’t sound judgmental, he was just stating a fact.
Roger shook his head. Nope. There was nothing right with the information he had on his screen. The thing was, he had to explain to Pearson and Dante because if he ever had a hope of finding Cam again, then he was going to need the pack’s help. He didn’t even know if he’d be able to find the boy.
“Apparently he was banished from his pack six years ago. He’s an Omega, something I didn’t realize when I met him, probably because he hadn’t shifted yet.”
“Oh shit,” Dante said, and Pearson looked just as worried as his mate.
“So how old is this boy of yours now?” Pearson asked.
“Twenty two.”
“And he was banished…?”
“Just before his sixteenth birthday according to the pack records I managed to hack into today. I’m guessing that was when he first shifted.”
“And he clearly had an Alpha who believed that being a male Omega was a clear sign the boy was gay, who then turfed him out because of it. Fuck it all, some Alphas really piss me off. Omegas are supposed to be protected.” Pearson did look angry too, and Roger wasn’t quite sure why. Yes Omegas were special but his Alpha didn’t know Cam, he had no emotional investment in the boy.
Yeah, but neither did you asshole, or you wouldn’t have left him so long without checking on him.
“Why haven’t you checked up on him before now?” Dante asked, his big hand soothing down Pearson’s arm. The ploy seemed to work as Pearson settled in an instant. Roger, in the meantime was struck momentarily mute by how perceptive the Alpha Mate seemed to be. It was like Dante had read his thoughts.
“Beca
use he’s so freaking young,” Roger said when he could get his mouth to work. “For fucks sake, I am fifty eight years old. I know we age slowly and I don’t look it but shit, he’s only just twenty two now…”
“If he’s alive,” Pearson said bluntly. “You know as well as I do that Omegas are rare and they don’t do well out of a pack situation. The chances of him still being alive are slim at best.”
“Surely I would know if my fated mate was dead,” Roger whispered. “Surely my wolf would know, even if I was too thick to see it.”
“Probably,” Pearson said, and his voice seemed gentler now. “But that doesn’t make you any less of a dick for not seeking him out sooner, even if it was to just check up on his welfare. What caused you to check on him now?”
“My wolf,” Roger said sadly, knowing that his human half had been more than happy with the life he’d been living up until now – a life he was now deathly ashamed of. Pearson looked like he needed more so he went on.
“My wolf is getting really antsy. He doesn’t like it if I go near any of the subs. I haven’t had sex in six months because my wolf won’t let me get near anyone without snarling at them, and not in a good way. More recently I have been finding it difficult to hold onto my human form and every freaking night for the past month I have been dreaming of Cam. Not the sexy dreams you would associate with a mate, but pure horror, like he’s tied up, being beaten and he’s lost and every time I try to reach him in my dreams, I just can’t get to him. I can’t remember the last time I had a good night’s sleep. Every night it’s the same. Cam screaming. In pain. Crying because he’s lost and there’s no one there and I can’t get to him.”
Roger was glad that no one said anything as Pearson and Dante took in what he had said. He was so fucking tired, he couldn’t eat and as much as he knew he needed to sleep, Roger hated the way his dreams made him feel, so he avoided it. But with his only other pursuit, subs and doing scenes, not possible due to his cantankerous wolf, Roger was going round the bend worrying about his mate.
“It sounds like his wolf spirit is trying to reach yours through the dream state,” Dante said thoughtfully at last.
“But Cam doesn’t even know who I am,” Roger said, although what the Alpha Mate said made sense. Wolves could dream about their mates and often knew they were due to meet their intended when they started having sexy dreams about one specific person. Roger could have handled the sexy stuff, but he was having nightmares.
“He was twelve years old when I met him. We were in the same room maybe five minutes at the most. He hadn’t shifted, hell, he was a gawky, skinny, little kid. That’s why I walked away.”
“But your wolf recognized his spirit immediately, and there is a good chance his wolf recognized yours, even though he hadn’t taken his full form yet,” Pearson said, his face still scowling. Roger had felt like crap about leaving his mate before Pearson and Dante invaded his office. Now he felt like stomped on shit and he knew he deserved to feel that way. If Cam had an inkling, even a suggestion of what they should have been together, then it meant that Cam had been dealing with the loss of an unknown mate as well.
Mates were special. There was no other word to describe it. Usually paranormals only got that one special person fated for them – sure, there were some shifters who had two mates, but then they formed a ménage and treasured each other the way they should. Meeting a true mate meant you stayed with them, claimed them, protected them and loved them for the rest of your life. You didn’t walk away. Roger wouldn’t have been able to claim Cam before the boy was at least eighteen, but knowing that Cam was his mate…shit, it had been Roger’s responsibility from that moment of meeting to ensure Cam’s safety. And he had walked away instead.
Roger remembered vividly the day he had met Cam. He had been visiting some friends in Romney and had called in to the Alpha there to ask for permission to be in his territory for a few days. The Alpha had seemed nice enough, giving permission easily and seeming more than happy to sit and chat for a bit. Ten years before there was very little internet use and packs were often isolated from each other. Catching up on pack doings, in those days, Alpha changes and things like that often came from personal meetings, rather than email messages. So the Alpha wanting to talk for a bit was nothing unusual.
While Roger had been sitting in the Alpha’s office, a large wolf had come in, dragging two boys by their shirt collars. The Alpha looked at the wolf and smiled.
“These boys been in the greenhouses again, Lawrence?”
The wolf barked and then growled at the boys.
“Cameron George Slater, Matthew Simon Jules. How many times do you two have to be told to stay out of the greenhouses?”
“Sorry Alpha.” Both boys did look sorry, their heads bowed, their skinny frames trembling. Roger felt a twinge of unease. He didn’t like seeing kids hit and he hoped the Alpha would go easy on the two, who weren’t really old enough to do much harm surely?
“Matthew, go to your father immediately, tell him what you have done and accept his punishment.”
“Yes Alpha.” The young blond kid still looked scared, but he bowed low and then ran out of the office.
“Come here Cam,” The Alpha ordered. The dark headed kid came and stood next to Roger’s chair. Up close the boy looked like he could do with a decent meal and some clean clothes. Roger took a peak at the boy’s face and was stunned to see clear, intelligent green eyes peaking back at him, before the boy faced the Alpha again.
Without thinking about it Roger took a surreptitious sniff and from that moment on he knew his fate was sealed. The little dark headed tyke was his mate, and Roger’s very adult cock reacted accordingly. Roger quickly crossed his legs and prayed the Alpha wouldn’t notice. He couldn’t help his reaction to the scent, but there was no way he would say or do anything to let the Alpha know what the boy was to him. That was far too risky. Gay wolf pairings were not encouraged in most packs and Cam could be in danger if Roger had said anything.
“Roger.” His mind dragged back to the present, Roger felt a bit embarrassed to see both Pearson and Dante looking at him with some concern. “I take it you are going to try and find out what happened to your mate?”
“Of course, Alpha,” Roger said, even as his head swum with possibilities. Cameron had left his pack at such a young age. The chances of finding a driver’s license, car insurance details or anything like that were slim, but Roger had to start somewhere. He could send out memos to all of the other packs asking for information. Bank records, social media accounts…Roger knew he had a lot to do, but the need to find out what had happened to his mate filled his brain and he couldn’t think of anything else.
A pen and a piece of paper being plunked down beside his keyboard made him jump.
“Full name and date of birth,” Pearson said. “I’ll get Steel onto it as well.”
Nodding quickly, Roger scribbled out the information on the piece of paper provided and went back to his keyboard. Steel had access to records he didn’t, Roger knew that. But he wasn’t the type of man to sit still and let someone else do something he should have done frigging years before – finding the young boy who was now a man, and who had always been his mate. So engrossed in his computer, Roger didn’t even hear the door of his office close as Pearson and Dante left the room.
Chapter Two
Five days later and Roger was still no closer to finding out what had happened to Cameron Slater, known simply in his mind as Cam. Sighing deeply as yet another email from another pack came back saying sorry but no, they had never heard of the shifter, Roger looked up at the clock. He wasn’t surprised to find it was close to midnight. He knew he should go home, but when he was home he slept, and when he slept all he could feel was the terror from his mate.
Not knowing if the feelings he were going through were real or not, was plaguing Rogers awake thoughts as well, and he was starting to question his sanity. If his dreams were from his mate, then Cam was in real trouble. The dreams had g
otten worse, full of darkness, pain, chains and blood – so much blood. Roger hung onto the idea that if he was having these dreams then at least his intended must still be alive. All he had to do was find the boy, man he reminded himself sternly, and claim him. Problem was, with all of his computer know-how, Roger was no closer to finding his mate than he was the previous week. It was as though Cam had literally fallen off the face of the earth the day he’d been banished from his pack.
A sharp knock on his office door and Steel opened the door and walked in, a piece of paper in his hand. The tall, military looking man, who still wore a scar on his face thanks to his efforts in saving his mate Levi from a sociopath, didn’t look happy. But then Steel never did unless Levi was in his arms. Roger looked around, expecting to see Levi behind his mate – the two were rarely apart.
“Levi’s getting Pearson and Dante. You’ve got problems they need to hear about,” Steel said in his deep, no-nonsense voice.
“You found Cam?” Roger didn’t have problems with anything else. He was the Bound and Bonded’s computer technician. It was his job to process the applications for entry to the club and the pack. His position as an enforcer had been established for years, and he never had a problem in his position as Dominant in a sub-heavy club. All he had to worry about was Cam. Roger’s heart jumped, wondering what Steel might have found that would render his mate into a problem for the pack.
“I have,” Steel said gravely. “And your dreams were right. Your boy is in a power of trouble.”
Roger knew that Steel wouldn’t say any more until the Alpha and Alpha Mate were in the room. The man didn’t talk much at all, but he had contacts in places Roger had never heard of. Levi came in a few minutes later, carrying a plate of hot steaming food. Roger was embarrassed to hear his stomach rumble. He couldn’t remember the last time he ate. He was even more embarrassed when Levi put the plate in front of him. Roger looked up at Steel. No Master liked their mate or their sub serving another, at least not in the Bound and Bonded club.
