Lola bit her lower lip out of indecisiveness, but the effect was hot as hell. I traveled along her collarbone with my kisses, but when I returned to meet her gaze, I could sense she wasn’t sure.

“Something wrong?” I asked. “We could get back to this after the tacos…”

She offered me a small smile. “No, not that.”

  “Then what?”

“Just…it’s hard to believe how I feel when I’m with you like this.”

  “Tell me.”

“Every time I’m with you, I feel like I’m on the verge of making a bad decision.”

“But one you’re happy to make.”

She nodded, and I answered it with another kiss, one she fell right into. We kissed longer and deeper, one of my hands on her hip, the other on her perfect ass, squeezing her through the scrubs.

“Is it weird that I think these things are sexy as fuck?”

Her eyebrows arched and she glanced down, tugging at the scrubs. “These?”

I moved my hand to her stomach, the fabric of the scrubs soft against my skin. “These.”

She chuckled. “Well, considering these are designed to be the most practical, least flattering clothes in the world…maybe a little. But I’m flattered nonetheless.”

“But,” I said, raising a finger, “as sexy as you are in them…”

Another laugh. “You really know how to lay it on thick, huh?”

“With a woman like you, what’s the point of holding back?”

The smile on her face revealed she was a fan of this answer, and though I’d made my stance on holding back clear, I couldn’t say the same for her. Every time she and I were on the verge of lovemaking, there was an apprehension I couldn’t ignore.

She was the one holding back. I wanted to know why.

But that moment wasn’t the time. Instead, I put my lips on hers and kissed her deeply again, the tips of our tongues flicking together and her delicious taste washing over my palate.

The kiss didn’t linger. With one more sly smile, she locked eyes with mine for a moment before dropping to her knees, her face in front of the tented front of my slacks. Her hands flurried over my belt buckle and zipper, quickly opening my pants before reaching inside. The moment her fingertips touched my cock I felt like I might lose control. But there wasn’t a chance I’d stop before seeing what the good doctor had in mind.

She pulled my cock out, wrapping both of her hands over the long shaft before placing her lips on the tip. Lola looked up at me, opening her mouth slightly and making a slow circle with her tongue around the ridge of my head. A shiver of pleasure ran through my body, the sight of Lola down on her knees in front of me about the sexiest fucking thing I’d ever seen in my life.

Lola opened her mouth and took my head into it, wrapping it with her warm wetness and lashing me with her tongue as she went down, down. I had plenty to work with down there, and she wasn’t able to go down far, but that was fine with me. Lola on her knees, her mouth full of my cock and her eyes smiling up at me was so fucking sexy it almost hurt.

She went back up, following her lips with her hands, soft sucking sounds filling the room. Lola worked to a steady rhythm, taking more and more of me into her mouth each time she went down. I groaned at the pleasure, her hand and her lips and her tongue all working together to take me to the edge.

As I approached the point of no return, I bent down enough to slip my hands under her arms and bring her up to her feet. Lola frowned at me, confused.

“As much as I’ve love to watch you drink every last drop, there’s somethin’ I want even more.”

  “And what’s that?”

  “You out of those scrubs.”

She smiled seductively at me, nodding. I pulled my shirt off and she did the same, both of us down to near nothing in seconds. Another hard kiss followed, our lips staying together as I led her over to the couch. I placed my hand on the small of her back as I guided her down, my cock positioned between her legs.

A hungry look flashed in her eyes, one that turned me on like crazy. She took my cock into her hand and positioned it between her lips. But rather than let her guide me inside, I held fast. Her expression shifted to one of confusion as she realized I wasn’t going to let her take me in so easily.

  “Ask for it,” I said.

She narrowed her eyes. “You’re kidding.”

“I want you to tell me how much you want it.”

“I want it.” She clearly hadn’t been expecting this.

“Lola, I want to be inside you so fuckin’ bad it makes me want to scream. It’s all I think about. Now, tell me how much you want it.”

She allowed herself a slight grin. “I want you so badly it annoys me. And confuses me. But I can’t stop thinking about it.”

And that’s what I wanted, to get her to admit to herself that this was about more than scratching an itch.

I loosened my hips and let her guide me inside. Lola’s pussy was slick and wet, my thick cock able to easily glide in. She stretched around me, her warmth enveloping me, a soft gasp pulling into her lungs as she took my inches.

Her lips parted slightly as I paused, my cock tingling with pleasure. Her eyes were soft, vulnerable, an expectant expression on her face as she held me inside.

The sex was as incredible as before, my pace slowly building to a steady rhythm as she wrapped her legs around my hips, her breasts bouncing underneath me. Her moans filled the air, blending with my grunts as we drew closer and closer to orgasm.

We came together, Lola’s moan cutting short as an orgasm took hold. The pleasure was incredible, waves of it flowing from my cock as I pulsed into her, filling her to the brim. And when we were done and I slid my cock out of her, all we could do for a long while was lay next to each other, Lola’s head on my shoulder and her hand on my chest.

“Now,” she said, once we finally caught our breaths. “How about those tacos?”

“A woman after my own heart,” I said. “I was thinking the same thing.”

“As hungry as I am, however, I don’t think I’d be too crazy about getting salsa all over my boobs.”

I laughed. “That’s got some erotic potential, actually.”

A grin spread across her lips. “Get your mind out of the gutter and get me some nachos.”

I rolled over and planted my feet on the floor, getting up and stepping into my boxer-briefs. After throwing my clothes on, I stepped into the kitchen and turned just in time to watch her leave the room, catching just a glimpse of her gorgeous, naked body as she went into the bedroom.

I’d just come, but the sight was enough to make my cock twitch, half-hard again. But whatever the rest of the night held, we needed to eat. I grabbed a few plates and set up some platters. Once that was done, I looked around for some suitable booze, settling on a bottle of tequila with barely any of it gone as well as margarita mix.

Lola wandered into the living room in a flirty silk robe that only reached the middle of her thighs. Her naked was stunning, of course, but something about that robe really did it for me in a way I couldn’t quite puzzle out.

“Alright,” I said, gesturing to the plates. “We got carnitas, we got al pastor, and we got regular, old chicken if that’s what you’re into. We’ve even got tequila.”

Her eyes flicked to the bottle and flashed wide. “Oh my God – I completely forgot I even had that.”

“Doesn’t look like you’re much of a fan,” I said as I poured two glasses, then mixed in the margarita mix with some ice cubes. I sipped to make sure the combination was right, then smacked my lips and offered her one.

“My coworker Maddie brought it over when I got the job at Pitt. As you can see, I’m not exactly a party girl when it comes to liquor.”

“Can’t have Mexican without it,” I said and raised my glass. “Now, we just have to figure out what we’re drinking to.”

She raised her glass. “You toast – I’ve never been good at these.”

  I gave the matter so
me thought, a smile taking hold as I settled on it. “How about to us spending the night together.”

Lola seemed confused. “Wait, are you serious? You want to stay over?”

I was surprised to be saying it, too. Most of my relationships with women, if one could even call them that, were of the one-and-done variety. Staying over was too intimate, too risky that the woman getting the wrong impression.

But, like she was in so many other ways, Lola was different. The idea of waking up next to her, the sunlight streaming in on her beautiful face…it made the idea seem like the best damn thing in the world.

“That’s not a good idea.” She spoke with a clipped tone, as if she didn’t need to even think about it.

  “And why’s that?”

She cocked her head to the side. “Not really in the busines of explaining myself to people.” She set down her glass without toasting and lifted one of the carnitas tacos, taking a big bite. “Damn, that’s good.”

“I’m not askin’ you to explain yourself, but—”

Lola swallowed and spoke. “That’s exactly what you’re asking me to do. I told you my thoughts on your suggestion, and now you’re asking me why. Is my response not good enough for you?”

I sipped my drink. “No, it’s not.”

This got an eyebrow-raise. “It’s not?”

“No. Lola, there’s somethin’ happenin’ between us. I don’t quite know what it is, but it’s there. You know it; I know it. And this thing we’re doin’ now where we keep endin’ up in bed together and then you push me away, it ain’t workin’.”

“If it ain’t workin, then we can stop.”

“See, that’s what you’re sayin’. But you know just as well as I do that’s not what would happen. We’d spend some time apart, then I’d come back into your life or you’d come back into mine. Then we’d end up in bed ready to repeat the cycle all over again.”

“Then maybe we both need to exercise a little bit of restraint. Maybe we—”

“Maybe we need to see this damn thing through,” I said, raising my voice a bit. “Maybe it’d—p”

  “I can’t.”

  “Tell me why not.”

Her eyes flashed. “Because I’m done dating, alright?” Her voice raised louder than mine. It was a bit of a shock. Lola was calm and cool to a fault, but she was damn near shouting.

Silence hung in the air, but I didn’t say a word. I had a feeling we’d just had a breakthrough.

She breathed out loudly. “Listen, I was with someone who was practically perfect on paper and it went to shit. So what’s the point?”

“You could always try something different,” I said.

  She appeared curious. “Like what?”

“Like datin’ a man who, on paper, looks like the worst boyfriend candidate in the world.”

She chuckled, and damn did it feel good to see her face light up.

“I’m not him.” I reached across the table and took her hand. “I’m a different man. And I want to show you that. But we’ll never get the chance if you keep puttin’ up this wall.”

She sighed. “I like you, Patrick. You’re cocky, you’re kind of a prick, and you’re pushy. But I still like you.”

“Then let’s spend the night together. Only way we’re gonna figure out where the hell this thing of ours is goin’ to go.”

She smiled thoughtfully, as if she was going back and forth, trying to figure out what to do, what the hell she wanted.

Finally, with a great sigh, she spoke. “Alright. Fine. But you’d better not steal the covers.”

  Chapter 18

  LOLA

The rest of the night went well. That was a lie. It was fun as hell, the most fun I’d had with a guy in as long as I could remember. Part of me had expected things to get strained and awkward after our conversation, but the opposite happened.

Patrick and I ate our tacos, washing them down with a couple of margaritas. After that, we had an impromptu movie night, watching a double feature with a couple of our guilty pleasure flicks. Mine was The Truth About Cats and Dogs, this corny-but-awesome 90’s romcom. His was Total Recall, a sci-fi shoot ‘em up featuring none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But the real fun had been cuddling on the couch, joking and laughing as we worked our way through a couple more drinks. When we went to bed, we silently disrobed and climbed between the sheets for another round of incredible sex.

It was almost scary how much fun I had with him; how much I enjoyed his company. I wanted to keep my guard up, however. Josh had been the same when we’d first started dating, all laughs and charm. Last thing I wanted was to get taken for a fool again.

And what I saw when I woke up was enough to make my heart skip with anxiety.

  He was gone.

My arm had dropped onto the bed in the space where he should’ve been, but instead of landing on his solid, broad chest, it fell onto cool sheets. I sucked in a sharp breath through my nose and sat up.

  He didn’t, I thought. He fucking didn’t.

I decided in the moment that if he’d pulled some move of talking me into bed only to dip out in the morning like the shithead playboy he seemed to be, he’d better pray his brother could get him a friends-and-family discount at the clinic – with the damage I’d do to him, he’d need it.

Before I could get too carried away with my righteous anger, something else caught my attention – the smell of coffee blending with the scent of toast. My stomach growled, and a smile crossed my features when I realized what he was doing.

A bit of rock music drifted into the kitchen, along with the ‘tsh-tsh-tsh’ of someone making noises along with the guitar.

He was here. And as it dawned on me that he hadn’t left, I scolded myself for getting so bent out of shape at the idea of him being gone. I’d told myself a million times I wouldn’t ever let a man put me through what Josh had, to have that kind of control over me. And the idea of Patrick leaving had hurt me and pissed me off all at once.

Footsteps approached, and Patrick appeared in the doorway with a cup of steaming coffee and a small plate. “Gooood mornin’!” he announced cheerfully.

“Good morning?” I asked. “Don’t Irish people say—”

He tilted his head forward and raised his eyebrows. “I’m gonna pretend you weren’t about to ask if Irish people actually say top o’ the mornin.”

I laughed. “Okay, okay – I’m not exactly an expert on Irish culture.”

He grinned, setting down the plate and mug on the nightstand next to me. “First step is if you learned it from a cereal featuring a leprechaun, forget it.”

That got another laugh out of me as I turned my attention to the food. The mug, as I’d guessed, contained coffee – along with a splash of milk. On the plate was a bagel.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but the cupboards were rather bare. I did the best with what was in there.”

I didn’t say anything, my eyes focused on the bagel. It was even topped with butter, and something about the simple, tasty breakfast was enough to make my heart flutter.

“You alright?” he asked. “I know a bagel and butter ain’t the most thrillin’ thing in the world, but…”

I shook my head. “No, it’s not that. No one’s ever brought me breakfast in bed before.”

“You’re pullin’ my leg,” he said skeptically. “Not once?”

  “Not once.”

“Well, happy to be your first when it comes to somethin’ like that.” He handed the plate to me and I took it. “Eat up – you’ve got a busy day ahead of you. Unless…” He raised his eyebrows in a suggestive manner.

“Don’t tell me you’re asking what I think you are.”

  “You averse to skippin’ class?”

Man, oh man, did the idea seem nice. But it was a no-go.

“Sorry. Part of me wants to stay in bed all day with a certain skilled photographer, but I’m the only ophthalmologist at the clinic – not like anyone could cover for me.”

“Darn,” he said. “Some other time. But let me ask you something – out of curiosity.”

  “Shoot.”

“When’s the last time you took a day off? One that wasn’t because you were under the weather?”

My answer came without hesitation. “Not once.”

He looked shocked. “Are you serious?”

“It’s actually something of a point of pride for me. I’ve never taken a day off – not even for being sick.”

“Don’t tell me you’ve dragged yourself to work coughin’ on your poor patients and the like.”

“No, not like that. I just don’t really get sick. Good genes, I guess.”

“But you’re gonna get sick one of these days.”

“True. And when that happens, I’ll consider taking time off.”

  He chuckled. “Such a rebel.”

I shrugged. “I take pride in being reliable.”

He took one of the bagel halves and brought it to his mouth, chomping off a big bite. As I ate, I watched his sensual mouth, remembering it’s unique flavor. I lifted my eyes to his and caught him smiling at me as if he’d read my thoughts. I reddened and continued eating.

We ate and chatted, sipping our coffee and discussing our days ahead. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had breakfast with a man, talking about nothing in particular, just enjoying one another’s company.

“Alright,” I said after tossing back the last bit of my coffee. “I need to get my day started – shower time.”

“Go for it,” he said. “I’ll get the kitchen cleaned up while you’re getting ready.”

His words were another taste of a domestic life I’d never known before. Me getting ready, a handsome man cleaning up, both a part of the same busy whirl of activity before going off to start our days.

I liked it a little too much.

I rose from the bed and planted a kiss on his lips. “Thanks for breakfast.”

“Thanks for lookin’ so damn good in the mornin’.”

I laughed as I wandered to the bathroom. “Now I know you’re lying.’
