Legacy of the Lost Page 29

by Lindsey Fairleigh

I almost couldn’t believe how much the tides had turned since I’d last faced him in this room. Today was just not his day.

“I take that back,” I told him. “I’m going to take Raiden into the labyrinth, and you’re going to let me, because you want what I left in there, and the only way you have any chance of getting your hands on that special, secret prize is by letting me go.” I took one more step toward Henry, bringing me well within his personal bubble. “Do we have deal?”

His breaths were deep, controlled. Within his mind, his thoughts spun as he worked through all of the possible scenarios, ranging from killing me here and now to letting me go with Raiden. To get what he wanted, he only saw one option: let us go.

“Good call,” I said, stepping past him.

In three steps, I was standing in front of Raiden. I held my hand out to him, pulling him up to his feet.

“Are you up for this?” I asked him.

Raiden nodded, which was a relief, because after my little showdown with Henry, we didn’t really have much of a choice.

“Good,” I said, flashing Raiden a quick smile. I reached past him and snatched the storage cube off the pedestal behind him.

“What—what are you doing?” Henry sputtered as Raiden and I walked toward the entrance to the labyrinth. “You can’t take that! It wasn’t part of the deal!”

Raiden passed through first, not hesitating for even the briefest moment.

I paused, eyeing each of the four guards posted around the room, then glanced back at Henry over my shoulder. “What are you going to do—shoot me?”

I held his stare, waiting until his outrage gave way to cool-headed logic and just the barest hint of admiration. Waiting until he saw that, once again, he didn’t have a choice.

The corner of his mouth lifted, forming the shadow of a smile, and he bowed his head infinitesimally. “I’ll see you again, ancient one.”

I returned his faint smile. “I’m counting on it.”

  About the Author

Lindsey Fairleigh is a bestselling Science Fiction and Fantasy author who lives her life with one foot in a book—so long as that book transports her to a magical world or bends the rules of science. Her novels, from Post-apocalyptic to Time Travel Romance, always offer up a hearty dose of unreality, along with plenty of history, mystery, adventure, and romance. When she's not working on her next novel, Lindsey spends her time walking around the foothills surrounding her home with her dogs, playing video games, and trying out new recipes on her husband. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family and their small pack of dogs and cats.
