“Think of it like this, Vic,” he pulls me against his chest. “Here, we have a high social status. We both play important roles in the colony and people look up to us. If we go back home, we’ll be bottom feeders. If I can get a job, who knows how long it’ll take. People will turn their noses up at us and we won’t have friends.”
I think about it for a moment and can’t agree more. “You’re right. Plus, this is all the kids know and they have so many friends here. I guess it would be wrong to take away the only life they know,” I say, saddened by the thought that we’ll never see our families again.
Hugging me tightly, he kisses the top of my head. “It’ll be all right, Vic. Nothing says that we can’t go back home to visit but I think it’d be best to stay here.”
My eyes grow with excitement. “We can go home to visit! That’s a great idea! Now, when are we going?”
A burst of laughter escapes him. “Settle down. We’ve only just talked about it. Let’s see what our options are and make some plans, and then we can go home for a visit.”
