  “Fuck you!” he sputtered.

“Ah, just drop the scheming bastard,” Turner muttered as he leaned against the window frame.

“I’ll drop you right there in the fucking street, Jim,” I called out. “Say it!”

  “You’re fucking crazy!”

All credit to the man, he had a weighty pair. Floating fifty feet above a busy street, with seemingly nothing keeping him in the air, and he still had the guts to yell at me. I dropped him for a split second, grabbing at him with my power before he’d dropped ten feet, but not before he’d managed to let out a girlish scream.

“John?” Mackenzie called, eyes on the flames in the doorway that were now licking merrily away at the ceiling. “Time to go.”

  “Spoilsport,” I grumbled.

“You going to drop him?” Johnson asked, scratching at his cheek as he followed me back towards the desk.

“Not today,” I admitted, and turned to Mackenzie. She gave me a knowing look as I hauled McCourt back in through the window and sent him crashing across the floor.

“I’m not done here, McCourt,” I told him as he rose to his knees. “Not with you, and not with Paragon. You sold me out, and now you owe me in ways you can’t even begin to fathom. When you’ve had a bit more time to consider your situation, we’ll have a proper chat. Right now, I’ve got shopping to do.”

He stared after us both, eyes flicking from one to the other as the flames parted and we made our way through the charred doorway.

Mackenzie looked back over one shoulder at the man I’d once called my friend. “Good luck with the fire,” she said with a sweet smile and glanced up at the ceiling as the flames bloomed and spread.

“Let’s get out of here.” I suggested. “We still need to sort out a ring.”

She rolled her eyes but couldn’t fight down the grin. “You still haven’t bloody asked me!”

This has been a hard book to write. It has proven far more challenging than I expected, and I’ve come close to abandoning it more than once. Setting the book in this world, rather than one of my own imagining, required a level of research that often took me by surprise. My internet search history became seriously dodgy for a while.

As always, I owe a debt of gratitude to my family and friends for putting up with me. My heartfelt thanks also go out to Alicia Wanstall-Burke, Bethan Hindmarch, and Sarah Chorn for their efforts with editing, and helping this all to make sense. Thanks, once more, go out to the ever-amazing Pen Astridge, for her incredible cover art, and to Clare Davidson for internal formatting. I simply couldn’t have produced this book without the help of Mike Evans. His assistance with my endless questions, and his patience when I didn’t understand which end of the gun was which, have both been invaluable.

Finally, my thanks go out to everyone who follows me, and who reads my books. Slowly, but surely, you are making a dream come true.

  About The Author

Graham Austin-King was born in the south of England and weaned on broken swords and half-forgotten spells. A shortage of these forced him to consume fantasy novels at an ever-increasing rate, turning to computers and tabletop gaming between meals.

He experimented with writing at the beginning of an education that meandered through journalism, international relations, and law. To this day he is committed to never allowing those first efforts to reach public eyes.

After roaming across England and Canada he settled once again in the north of England surrounded by a seemingly endless horde of children. The Riven Wyrde Saga is his first completed trilogy and draws on a foundation of literary influences ranging from David Eddings to Dean Koontz.
