Those giggles were even harder to keep inside when the magical mystery tree door opened yet again, and Barnaby and Wizzy ran back into Fairyland. Wizzy’s cape had twisted around the wrong way and his tall, lustrous hat was lopsided and covered in twigs. Barnaby’s long blonde princess wig had blown all over his face, and only his bee-nose was popping out through the curls.
As the bee and the wizard shut the door behind them, and swept aside the hat and the curls so they could see again, their first sight was of the windswept fairies. It must have been such a scary sight as Wizzy let out a high scream and jumped into Barnaby’s arms in fear, Barnaby then screaming out too – but that might have been because he had a very heavy Wizard in his arms!
“Hi Barnaby. Hi Wizzy. See something … frightful?” Rhapsody laughed.
Harmony realised instantly that Barnaby’s wig and crown most likely came from a wayward Wizzy spell, and when Wizzy was back on solid ground, she quietly whispered “Need a bit of help with your spell Wizzy?”
Wizzy looked a bit scared as his black and gold, best bee friend hadn’t found a mirror since Wizzy’s princess spell went a bit wonky, and he quickly nodded at Harmony. “Yes please, Harmony!”
Magic fairy wand so sweet
Please turn Barnaby back to a handsome bee!
In a burst of sparkling stars and fairy dust, Barnaby’s normal bee-head was instantly back looking perfect, just as he leant over a nearby pond to check out his reflection. With a bit of a swagger, he turned to his friends “Bee perfect, as per usual … but Fairies – Wizzy – you could all do with a bit of a makeover!”
Back in the snuggery, having fixed their wayward hair, picked the twigs and petals from their wings and tidied up their dresses, Harmony and Rhapsody tried to call Princess Glittermist again. “The Princesses’ phone is still going through to the Fairy Messaging Service,” Harmony told her friend. “Listen Rhapsody!” and as she put the fairy phone onto loud speaker, the message was clear.
“Please leave a message and remember … keep smiling!
CHAPTER NINETEEN
After a fun day of windy weather, dance lessons, singing practice and fairy spells, Harmony and Rhapsody were having some quiet time, gently swinging on the fairyland swings as the sun set over the horizon, a billion stars starting to twinkle in the night sky as it turned into a deep, midnight blue.
But one particular star was a bit strange. It wasn’t just twinkling in the sky, it seemed to get bigger and bigger, and as it came closer to Fairyland, the fairies could see it wasn’t white and sparkly, it was very gold and shining like a hundred fireflies. It was Twinkle the Tooth Fairy!
“Twinkle the Tooth Fairy! How lovely to see you!” Harmony exclaimed, jumping off the swing just as Twinkle landed next to the her, and hugging her golden friend.
“What brings you to Fairyland, Twinkle?” said Rhapsody, also sharing a sparkling hug with the Tooth Fairy.
“Fairy hello Harmony, Rhapsody! Just taking a little break from collecting magic fairy dust, and thought I’d pay a visit to my favourite pink and purple fairies!”
Rhapsody’s face lit up in awe as Twinkle unscrewed the lid of a very pretty pot and showed them her new fairy dust, which glowed just like the brightest stars twinkling above them, and looked very, very magical.
“Oooh Twinkle” Rhapsody gushed, and holding their friend’s hands, Harmony and Rhapsody sat down with Twinkle on the soft, spongy moss under a mushroom as Rhapsody begged her friend “Please tell us the story of magic fairy dust again – I just love that story!”
When children lose a baby tooth
A fairy comes and visits soon
She takes the tooth to light the sky
Then leaves a shiny coin behind
With the tooth she flies so high
Up and away into the sky
Then gently sets the tooth so bright
Into the sky to shine at night
And when a star’s new in the sky
It’s so happy, so delighted
Twirls and whirls right through the night
Cartwheels of excitement
As it dances, sings and plays
Twinkling stars to show the way
From its light falls fairy dust
Fairy dust for us!
In the top of the garden, the lights in the window of Granny Love’s house were glowing brightly through the curtains. Sophia and Ethan were in their bedroom, ready for the land of sleepy dreams, as Granny Love peered out of the window before turning and speaking to her grandchildren. “The sky is all clear again and the wind has died down – that was a very odd storm, wasn’t it. It almost seemed to come out of nowhere! But now my little bambinos, only six more sleeps until Mummy and Daddy come home!”
That news, however, was not what the children want to hear. “But Granny Love we don’t want to leave in six sleeps time! We have so much fun with you!” cried out Sophia.
Secretly delighted that they loved being with her so much, Granny Love still shook her head “Ah, but that’s what Granny’s are for, Sophia – having fun! But you know you can’t have fun all of the time, or it would seem normal and not fun any more.”
In the dark of the night, Granny Love couldn’t see the Little Gnome, who was standing on a flower pot just underneath the window sill, watching the children’s window carefully. When he saw her draw the curtains, he took a mighty jump off the flowerpot and landed neatly like a gymnast, then turned on the miner’s light on top of his head and started muttering as he searched the smooth lawn. If Granny Love could have heard him, she would have been puzzled over his words. “Come here little fairy wand. Come to me!”
Suddenly the Little Gnome saw something twinkling in the torch light, and racing towards the twinkle, he found a very, very beautiful wand, encrusted with jewels in all the colours of the rainbow, entwined with spider-web think strands of pure silver and gold. The gnome let out a loud “yippee”, as he danced around in celebration, and was quick to try out the wand’s magic, pointing the tip of the wand at a bright yellow tennis ball lying nearby, and chanting:
Magic wand do as I say
And bring that ball to me right away!
And in an instant the fairy wand obeyed the keeper, and threw itself at the Little Gnome, hitting him full on in the stomach and taking all of the wind from his lungs as it flattened him to the grass. “Hmmm. Might need a bit of wand practise,” he grumbled as he hauled himself off, carefully put the wand into his rucksack and stomped off towards the magical mystery tree doorway, back into Fairyland.
CHAPTER TWENTY
Over the next few days, magical friends in Fairylands all around the world were preparing for the fantastically special day to arrive.
On Fairy Beach, Bubbles the Beach Fairy practised her dance moves on the sand, while the Fairy Mermaids Aquarius and Coralight danced in the sea.
The Bootskooting Fairies worked very hard to make sure their steps were perfect, while the Snow Pixies loved every second of their rehearsal as they skated across the icy ponds in their winter fairyland.
Everyone was rehearsing, it seemed, except for Prince Cobalt, who sat, hour after hour after hour, alone in Elf’s Flower Pot Café, waiting and looking at every customer who walked in, but never seeing Princess Glittermist.
Back in Harmony and Rhapsody’s Fairyland, Fairy Breeze skipped along a cobbled pathway, quite recovered and obviously very happy, although still a bit dishevelled and windswept. She knelt down and looked at her reflection in the Fairyland pond, touching her face and her hair, but still not able to recognise just who she really was.
When there were just three more sleeps until the big day, the Fairies woke up feeling so excited. Rhapsody was clearly in a big hurry!
“Come on Harmony, let’s wash, clean our teeth, get dressed and head to the Flower Pot cafe. Rehearsals start at 9 o clock! I can hardly wait … I’ll see you there and … keep smiling!”
Elf was wiping down tables, setting chairs straight as he hummed to himself.
The truly magnificent wedding cake was completely finished and took pride of place on a cloth-covered table in the centre of the Flower Pot Café. Rhapsody danced into the picture and stopped in front of the masterpiece, her mouth open in amazement as she took in all of the beautiful and intricate icing work that Elf had woven around the heart-shaped cake, with the names ‘Prince’ and ‘Princess’ embroidered in the tiniest of icing rosebuds on the top tier.
“You like the cake?” Elf asked, so pleased with Rhapsody’s response as his fairy friend gasped at him.
“Elf you are so talented,” she whispered in awe. “I’ve never seen anything as beautiful, ever! I can’t wait till Harmony sees it – she’ll be here in 5 fairy seconds – come on, count with me!”
Together they counted to fairy five and as the last number was spoken, Harmony appeared in a burst of sparkling stars and fairy dust, smiling at her friends before she saw the stunning cake in front of her.
“Oh my fairy goodness Elf – I’m, I’m … I’m almost speechless!” she gasped. “You are a cake decorating genius!”
Elf was delighted with the praise. “Thank you, dear fairies” he responded, then modestly changed the subject. “All ready for a big day of rehearsals fairies?”
“Everything’s organized except for Prince Cobalt’s duet,” answered Rhapsody.
“The Prince is SO sad that Princess Glittermist hasn’t turned up. I wonder why? She must have been called back to her Fairyland for something very, very important. I’ll try calling her again.”
Again Harmony magiced the fairy phone to her hand, dialled the number and held it to her ear, but again the fairy messaging service cut straight in.
‘Thanks for your call! Please leave a message and remember … keep smiling!’
Shaking her head sadly, Harmony pressed ‘end’ and the phone disappeared, just as Fairy Breeze skipped into Fairyland.
“Fairy hello everyone! It’s another beautiful day in Fairyland,” the words trilled out of her mouth, her voice like the most beautiful sing song of fairyland’s prettiest bird.
“Morning Fairy Breeze - any luck finding your wand?” Fairy Breeze’s smile dimmed slightly at Elf’s words, and the Little Gnome, who was sort of hiding underneath a nearby mushroom, squirmed just a little bit, as if he felt just a tiny bit guilty.
“Not yet Elf,” replied Fairy Breeze. “Barnaby has been amazing and had all of the Bee Boyz flying around the top of the garden, but nobody’s found a wand yet.”
Fairy Breeze was quiet and turned around, almost talking to herself. “Who knows – perhaps I’m not even a fairy!” But turning back to Elf with her sparkling smile, she shook off any tiny grumbles. “Not to worry! It’ll turn up one day!” and she skipped away, waving goodbye as Rhapsody called after her “Keep on smiling, Fairy Breeze!”
“Fairy Breeze is such a happy fairy - even though she has the forget-me-nots, she’s still smiling and singing,” Rhapsody commented to Elf and Harmony … then suddenly her eyes widened and her mouth opened.
“Harmony, Elf … I’ve just had a fan-fairy-tastic idea! Why don’t we teach Fairy Breeze the Princesses part of the duet! I know she’s not Princess Glittermist, but at least Prince Cobalt will know the song to sing for the happy couple at the wedding reception! If Princess Glittermist does arrive we can teach it to her fast, and they’ll be able to sing it together!”
Elf jumped up high and clapped his hands in delight. “Brilliant Rhapsody, that’s a perfect idea. You’re learning from Harmony all the time!”
Harmony smiled. “I’m not the only one in Fairyland with ideas, Elf, and you’re right – that is a great idea. Let’s follow Fairy Breeze now and see if she wants to help!”
As Elf bounded back to his café, and the fairies skipped out of Fairyland towards Fairy Breeze, the Little Gnome crawled out from under the mushroom where he’d been hiding and stood up, not at all happy. As he pulled faces, he mimicked Harmony.
“Brilliant Rhapsody!” “That’s a perfect idea!” He strutted towards the Flower Pot Café, still muttering under his breath. “Amazing. They’re even going to teach a song to a silly little fairy who’s got the forget-me-nots! Where’s my song? Forget about duets … what about hip hop! Where do I fit into this! Mmmp. Keep smiling. Sure, but what is there to smile about when you’re a Little Gnome that nobody cares about?”
CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
At the Café, Wizzy was practising his wand swooshes and cape twirls. Barnaby had told him he needed to practise over and over and over, but just as he theatrically turned and swooshed his wand, the Little Gnome strutted into sight. In a burst of purple smoke and wizard stars, Wizzy’s spell hit the Gnome’s shoes, which were suddenly five times as big – way too big for his gnomey feet! The Little Gnome tripped over and fell flat on his face, not seeing Wizzy as the Wizard quietly bobbed below a large flower bush, his mouth and eyes wide open in an “oh oh” kind of way.
Looking around for someone to blame, The Little Gnome found no-one, so he picked himself up and tried hard to walk out of Fairyland, muttering all the way, as Wizzy slowly stood up again and whispered: “Definitely time for a Fruity-Slushie”, and watching to make sure the Little Gnome wasn’t coming back, he crept quietly backwards for a few steps before turning and finding the nearest table in the Café and sliding onto his seat, pretending he’d been there all morning!
As he was using the Flower Pot Cafe menu to hide his face, Wizzy didn’t see The Fairies come into the Café with Prince Cobalt and Fairy Breeze. “Wizzy! Fairy hello! Just who we need!” Harmony called out and Wizzy jumped up high.
“I didn’t do it – it wasn’t me – no spells in sight” Wizzy blurted out guiltily.
The Fairies looked at him with a knowing smile, but quickly remembered why they had been looking for Wizzy. “How are your piano skills Wizzy?” asked Harmony.
Wizzy’s smile brightened. The Fairies didn’t know about his wonky magic – they needed him for something else!
“Tinkling the piano is one of my better skills, Harmony!” he stated proudly. As Harmony waved her wand at the Magic Music Book, the sheet music for the Duet peeled off and into Wizzy’s hands.
“Fairy Breeze is going to help Prince Cobalt learn the duet so that he’s ready when Princess Glittermist arrives,” Harmony explained, and with a smile, Wizzy pranced over to the piano, sat down with a flourish, flouncing his cape out behind him, and looked skyward, praying that the magic took hold of his fingers in the right way!
The first song his fingers started bashing out was ‘chopsticks’. He tried to stop, slapping his hands on top of each other, before laughingly turning to the fairies.
“It’s been a little while!” he commented, before shaking his hands out wide and flexing his fingers before they landed on the piano keys and played a loud rendition of the knuckle song!
Wizzy gave an embarrassed laugh and cough. “Nearly there Prince Cobalt, Fairy Breeze!” he assured them, as one of his hands wrestled with the other hand to stop it banging out the song.
“Come on” he muttered under his breath. “Please work wizardly fingers. Third time lucky!” and blowing on his fingers for good luck, he flexed them gracefully before they floated down towards the keys and tinkled out a beautiful lullaby.
Wizzy let out a very relieved “whew” before turning to his audience and beckoning them over to join him. “The Piano Wizard at your service. Let’s sing!”
Wizzy helped Prince Cobalt and Fairy Breeze rehearse over the next few days, and while they weren’t singing, the two became such good friends; swinging through the air on the fairy swings; walking through Fairyland laughing with each other; practising their dance steps – even sharing fruity smoothies and playing hide and seek.
The words of song became more and more important to them as they quickly became the very best of friends, until finally, it was the night before the Surprise Royal Fairy Wedding.
As the Prince and the Fairy sat and chatted and laughed quietly in Fairyland, Elf and Barnaby
crossed paths in front of them, giant toothbrushes in hand.
“Night, night, Barnaby – honey dreams!” said Elf.
“You too, Elf. Buzzy exciting!” As Barnaby yawned broadly he kept talking sleepily. “So exciting, I’m not sure how I’ll possibly manage to sleep tonight!”
Harmony was already snuggled down in her fairy bed as Rhapsody popped her sparkly, jewelled wand into her wand holder, stretched, then jumped into her own bed, her eyes looking just as tired as Barnaby’s had. It had been a very busy week, full of rehearsals and so much excitement. “I hope we’ve remembered everything … I really want tomorrow to be perfect,” Rhapsody yawned.
“We’ve done a good job Rhapsody,” Harmony replied, as she snuggled under her downy quilt. “We’ve planned the whole day and ticked everything off our list. Tomorrow is sure to be fan-fairy-tastic!”
“I’m not sure that I’ll ever be able to …” Rhapsody’s sentence was cut short as a ginormous yawn overtook her.
“I’ll never, ever be able to get to sleep …” but in just a few seconds she had closed her eyes and fallen asleep straight away!
CHAPTER TWENTY TWO
In the real world, in the Top of the Garden, the shadows were getting longer on the lawn as the sun dropped down further and further, very close to its bedtime. Granny Love was trying to hurry up her grandchildren. “Sophia, Ethan, are your bags nearly packed? We have to leave in a minute. Your Mummy and Daddy will be so excited to see you!”
But Sophia had a problem.
“We can’t go yet Granny Love, I’ve lost my tooth.”
Not understanding, Granny Love was very excited, in a busyish sort of way. “That is so special Sophia! You can leave it next to your bed when you get to your home tonight, and the Tooth Fairy will swap it for a shiny gold coin!”
But then Sophia’s bottom lip began to wobble and her face crumpled as her eyes filled up with tears as she explained that she had REALLY lost it! The tooth had fallen out of her mouth when she swinging, and she had carefully popped it into her pocket to keep it safe, and it disappeared! It must have fallen out as she was running, and although Sophia had looked and looked, she couldn’t find the tooth anywhere.
