“Oh, don’t be coy, Evie,” June said. “Tell her.”
“We-ll-l,” Evie said, drawing out the word, “that Alice you introduced me to—”
“What Alice?” Gianna said, now fully alert.
“Her name’s Alice Long,” Phyllis said, “and you should see her! That girl is so fine she hurts your eyes! And next time you have somebody to introduce, Mimi, make it to me.”
“I didn’t know you knew Alice,” Gianna said to Mimi.
“We’ve met,” Mimi said, eliciting guffaws from the other four women.
“Don’t worry, Gianna, honey,” Evie said in that same slow drawl and sounding a lot like Alice, “I promise you that I’m the only one Officer Long has eyes for these days, and from what I can see Miss Patterson has eyes only for you. So relax, Girl.”
Gianna stood up and extended a hand to Mimi. “Come on,” she said.
Mimi took Gianna’s hand and stood up. “Where are we going?”
“To get the real estate section from the paper. You’ve got to find us a place to live and it’s got to have an attached garage and a hot tub. And tell me, how is it you know Alice Long well enough to introduce her to somebody?”
