  Irish-isms

  __________

I’m an Irish writer, living in the land of storytellers and poets. I have therefore chosen to write this serial true to my heritage—with Irish turns of phrase, colloquialisms, popular expressions, and vernacular.

These are intentional and a reflection of our sometimes odd and colourful use of language. I love language and our unique way of using it and I hope you enjoy it just as much.

Sláinte agus go raibh maith agat.

  PART III

  Fizzed Up

There’s usually an Irish phrase to suit most situations and this one was no exception. Because here I was, standing in his kitchen, in his actual house, and wondering what the hell I was doing. The entire thing was, wait for it, ‘putting the heart crossways in me’. See? It’s the best description for the heart attack I felt like I was experiencing.

In fact, if I wasn’t hyperventilating from the sheer panic of being there, I might have thought I was dreaming. We’d rode back to his house from the lake, and the whole time my heart pounded in my chest.

“Drink?” Sonny held the fridge door open and waited for me to reply. His house was small, a seventies style bungalow with a yard to the side and a garage where he kept his bikes.

“I’ll have a coke. Please and thank you.”

Sonny smirked, playfully repeating my please and thank you with a chuckle as he fished out a can of coke from the fridge. Then, as though we were in a bar, or a movie—a cowboy movie—he slid the can down along the kitchen counter to me. The condensation trickled down the outside of the can and I almost dropped it but managed to save it in time.

“Sorry,” I said, and I smiled shyly. Okay, I need to get a grip of myself, relax and not be so nervous around him.

Trying my best to seem casual, I leaned back against the counter and snapped the tab open only for an eruption of fizz to bubble up and swarm out and down over my trembling fingers. Well, so much for trying to look cool. Jesus, I couldn’t catch a break.

“Shit, sorry. I’ll clean it up.” I heard the familiar strain in my voice—the anxious panic—and I cringed. My step-dad hated any sort of mess and I guess it was sort of drummed into me at this stage; scrambling to fix whatever fuck-up I’d made so he wouldn’t freak out and roar at me. Again. Or worse...

“Don’t worry about it,” Sonny drawled, slow and lazy and sexy as hell. Maybe he was the cowboy in this story? It made sense. I was probably more the inexperienced apprentice farrier from a poor family. I watched as he tore some kitchen paper from the roll and wiped up the little pool of liquid from the counter.

Not really thinking what I was doing, I set the can down and licked the sticky liquid from my fingers, before sucking my index finger into my mouth completely.

“Holy shit.” Sonny had paused, a bundle of kitchen paper in his hand as he watched me. His voice was low with an edge of something that made me shiver.

“I can’t help but imagine you licking something else from those fingers like that, boy,” he growled, which only amplified how dirty he already sounded. The words almost dripped from his mouth, like the liquid dripped from my fingers.

Heat ran through my veins and my face burned bright. Ugh, could I not just stay a normal shade of human for once? But I knew the blush was reaching luminous levels when Sonny grinned and tilted his chin toward me. “Feeling hot? You need to cool off?”

“Me? Nope. I’m always this lovely shade of puce.”

I twisted my neck, stretching it from side to side and willing my complexion to calm the hell down. My shoulders were practically touching my ears with the tension of this entire experience. It wasn’t that I was even anxious or anything, just the discomfort of being so out of my depth. If only I wasn’t so green and clueless.

But I was. I was like a fawn stumbling around in front of a wolf. And that wolf was staring at me as though I was the tastiest meat he’d ever set eyes on.

I reached my right hand up and rubbed at my shoulder, shooting him a shy smile.

“You alright?” Sonny asked then. His expression was different, a concerned look in his dark eyes. This might sound odd but seeing him look at me like that was incredible. Like he cared about me or something. It was so destabilizing I had to clutch the edge of the kitchen counter. I wanted Sonny to look at me like that forever.

  Nobody cared about me.

  Maybe my mom, but...

Nobody looked at me the way he did.

I nodded sheepishly. “I hold all my tension in my shoulders. But I’m fine.”

“Here, let me help.” Sonny walked across the small kitchen and stopped at one of the kitchen chairs, pulling it out and nodding for me to come over and sit.

“Really? Okay...” I stumbled across the kitchen, my legs feeling like rubber, and took a seat. To make matters worse I was vibrating with excitement.

“Take your top off. If you’re comfortable to do that. Whatever you prefer is fine.” Sonny stared down at me, a strand of his dark hair tipping forward slightly and gliding across his forehead. God, I wanted to reach up and brush it away. Maybe kiss his eyelids, taste his mouth...

“Yeah, sure.” I literally ripped my t-shirt off at death-defying speeds. And I mean literally. There was a small tear sound as my elbow caught in my sleeve but that didn’t stop
me. Shirtless, I turned around so I was sitting with my back to him and just burning with electricity. The smart thing for me to do would have been to stay quiet. But no, I couldn’t do that. Instead I attempted to make small talk. Yup, you can imagine how that went.

“So, you live here alone? I like what you’ve done with the place. Those salt and pepper shakers are cute.”

Jesus. What the fuck is wrong with my brain.

“Shh, just relax,” Sonny said, his voice low and comforting.

“Are they foxes or squirrels? The pepper shakers. I can’t tell from this angle, but they kinda look...” I trailed off as Sonny’s hands landed on my bare shoulders, warm and rough against my skin, as he skimmed down my spine and fanned across my shoulder blades.

I shuddered at the sensation. It felt so good, he may as well have been caressing my balls.

“That pressure okay?” Sonny asked as he continued to massage my shoulders, firm but gentle.

“Uh-huh,” I mumbled, totally brain-dead at that stage. All I could do was feel. Oh hell, was I feeling things. I closed my eyes, allowing myself to let go and relax fully into the moment. Sonny pressed his thumbs into that perfect spot at the base of my neck and...“Ugh,” I groaned out loud, my head tipping back a little as his fingers released a ball of tight muscle.

“There? You’re so tense, Ali. What do you have to be so worked up about at your age?”

I’m sure it was a rhetorical question, but sitting there with Sonny touching me like that, not sexually, but sensually...it was overwhelming. I felt sort of safe, for the first time in a very long time and a rush of emotion flooded me until I found myself spilling a load of shit I’d no intention of sharing.

“More than you’d think, seriously. Try a lifetime of living with a bully. My step-dad arrived on the scene when I was seven and he’s made my life hell ever since. It’s like living in a prison only nobody else can tell you’re trapped. I don’t even think it’s the gay thing he’s got a problem with. I’m convinced I’m just a disappointment. There’s nothing I could ever do to please him. And I tried. Jesus, Sonny, I tried. Like, this one time, I spent hours working on my school project when I was nine. I wanted him to be so proud. You know what he did? He laughed. Like, actually laughed. Can you imagine that? And then I cried. I hadn’t meant to, but I cried because it was the moment I realized I’d never be good enough for him. And then he laughed at my crying and told me to ‘man the fuck up’. At nine. So yeah, I’m stressed about a lot of things because he’s making me live the way he wants, not how I want. And he’s forcing me to work at the garage.”

Sonny’s hands continued to massage me, but the pressure had eased and now he was almost holding me by the shoulders, the heat from his strong hands soaking into my skin and down into my bones. But he never said a word, instead he continued caressing my neck and shoulders in a way that made me feel like I was being unfurled after a lifetime of being tightly wound.

“And, oh wait ‘til I tell you this one. I don’t want to go to university. Not straight away. I want to travel and experience things. Leave this small town and just escape, you know? Like, see the world, and feel like I’m actually living my life. Not just existing from day to day. But the only way I’d ever get to do that is if I run away. Because my step-dad demanded I go to uni and that I study science or engineering. Eh, no way. So, I applied for History because I like that. But he’s still trying to convince me to change. And all I want to do is run away, so far away, and never look back, never stop running, just to be free....”

Sonny let go of me, the loss of heat snapping me out of my rant. Shit, I shouldn't have shared so much. I was about to apologize but he dragged the chair around, the legs scraping against the tiled floor. He leaned in, his mouth close to mine but his eyes were locked onto me with such intensity it was unnerving. And then his hands, oh God, they cupped my face and he pressed his lips to mine so gently it felt like air.

“Baby boy, you are more than enough. You’re perfect just as you are. Don’t let one asshole’s issues ruin you. You’re nearly nineteen. You can do anything you want. Go anywhere you want. You can be free.”

I was lost. Lost in Sonny’s eyes, and in his words. “But can I really go anywhere? It’s scary...”

Sonny smiled and brushed his mouth against mine, dipping his tongue between my lips and sending spikes of electricity up my spine. “Yeah, why not? The world is yours. You can go anywhere. You don’t have to go on your own.”

A nervous laugh escaped my lips. “Are you offering to come with me?” I said jokingly.

“Not exactly. But I might be planning on getting out of this town myself. You’re welcome to tag along if you want to? Anything would be better than staying in the prison you’ve just described.”

“Are you asking me to run away with you, Thor?”

Sonny’s mouth curved into a delicious smile and he cocked his head to the side, clearly amused by my slip up. “Thor?”

I chewed my lip and groaned. “Oh crap. I may as well confess now. Yup, Thor. That’s what I’ve been secretly calling you. Your number is even saved in my phone under that name too.”

Sonny broke into a sexy laugh and then sat in the seat next to me before hauling me forward to straddle him. God, that felt unreal. He was hard, and I rocked my ass against him, desperate for what was inside his jeans to be inside of me.

“I’m not Thor, so don’t be putting me on some sort of weird pedestal, kid. I’m just a regular guy.”

I made a stupid guffaw. I couldn't help embarrassing myself. “You’re far from regular.”

Sonny’s smile would have been enough to kill me, but the way his erection jerked against my ass had me rutting against him and not giving an absolute rat’s ass whether it came across as desperate or not.

“Slow down. Tell me, do you want me to look after you, Ali?”

I nodded so hard I probably resembled one of those nodding dashboard dogs.

“Uh, huh. I do. But can I ask you something?”

Sonny slid his hands under my ass and squeezed, the action almost dissolving the words from my brain.

  “Go ahead.”

I chewed my lip, not wanting to sound like a total fool. “Is this just a bit of fun or is it more? I’m good with whatever, I just kinda want to know so I don’t get the wrong idea, or, you know...stuff...” I was rambling and making no fucking sense.

  “Ali?”

I glanced up, staring into his hungry eyes. “Yeah?”

“I like you and I think we’re good together. Do you want to be my boy?”

Relief washed over me. He wants me. Sonny really wants me.

I nodded furiously. “Oh my God, yes. Definitely. Sign me up.”

Sonny chuckled and I wriggled again in his lap, licking my lips as his cock pressed against me.

“There’s no sign-up sheet, kiddo. But verbal agreements are good. You up for this? You want me to be your Daddy?”

I didn’t have to answer because Sonny dropped his hand to my crotch and pressed his palm against my aching erection. “Oh, you are up for it.” He leaned in, nipping the flesh of my neck until I let out a shout.

“Get up and follow me. I’ve something to show you.”

I clambered off his lap and followed him out of the kitchen and down a dark, narrow hall. Whatever he wanted to show me it didn’t matter. Because I already knew I’d be willing to do it, try it, take it...whatever it was. I’d do anything for a guy like Sonny.

  Watch Me

Just in case anyone is concerned for my safety, I totally had my phone’s location setting turned on. I mean, I was fairly sure Sonny wasn’t a crazy person, but I wasn’t a fool. I knew that Charlene or someone would figure out how to find me if I went MIA. You know, just in case Sonny was a little scarier or kinkier than I’d thought and tied me up or something. Although the thought of being bound in rope and at his mercy wasn’t that bad, truth be told.

Sonny stopped outside the last door on the left—these seventies style
bungalows were just one long corridor with several rooms to each side—and he switched on the light, illuminating a rather nice bedroom. There wasn’t a lot in it, but a nice bed with smooth navy sheets, warm oak lockers and a matching chest of drawers. It was grownup and it reminded me that Sonny wasn’t a teenager like me. He was a man.

“You can sit there, and I’ll get it for you.” Sonny pointed to the blanket box at the end of the bed and I sat quickly, nerves thrumming through me.

“Here, I thought you might appreciate this.”

I stared at the package for a minute and then took it, unwrapping the loose plastic wrap and grinning as a thin leather harness fell out. “Is this what I think it is?”

“Depends on what you think it is?”

I cocked my head to the side. “Sonny. Can you ever just answer a question straight?”

“I don’t do anything straight, boy. You like leather so let’s see you dressed up in some.”

The previous summer Charlene had dragged me onto the bus for the two-hour journey all the way to Dublin city for the Pride parade. We’d had so much fun and I’d remembered seeing some of the men wearing harnesses like these—thin straps of leather with metal buckles that fastened. But I’d never imagined I’d be wearing one someday.

My shirt was still off from the massage and I felt all shy and nervous now. I hadn't a clue how to put it on.

“Let me help you,” Sonny said, and his strong hands were guiding the harness on to me and carefully fastening it.

“How do I look?” I whispered, my heart spinning as my stomach flipped with nerves.

“Why don’t you see for yourself?” Sonny grabbed my hand—God that felt good—and lead me over to the full-length mirror.

I stared at the reflection, the young man with a pretty face and smooth skin juxtaposed with the black leather. I barely recognized myself, but I loved how it looked. I felt more like myself than I usually did. As though a part of me was being unleashed.
