The Graveyard Shift: A Horror Comedy (24/7 Demon Mart Book 1) Page 25

What's my point? Who knows? Maybe the actual humans low-paid service workers deal with at three a.m. are just as off-putting as mystery demons with ostrich legs, snake dudes in trench coats or Morty the smarmy succubus. Maybe, sometimes, you are so broke and so desperate that you're willing to guard a hell gate. I know the $4.50 an hour I made was SO TOTALLY worth putting up with all of this. I was a valued, highly trained professional earning big bucks to man the phone sex line, the suicide prevention hotline, and restock the beer all at once. (Ha.)

Seriously. This is why I'm always nice to people working retail and in restaurants, even if they're grumpy. Because until you've been in the trenches, you have NO IDEA what kind of crazy they've dealt with before you even stepped in the door.

So this is where I will leave you this time. Thank you so much for reading. More books in the 24/7 Demon Mart series are coming, including Monster Burger, which will be an homage to all the zombie fiction I have known and loved. (Shaun of the Dead, anyone? Anyone?)

But my one final gift for you is this: My Mom's, aka Lloyd's Mom's, cheesy potato recipe. Now, bear in mind it's my great grandma's recipe, ergo it's slim on particulars. Back in the day, people knew how to cook so they didn't feel the need to write every single little thing down. But, give it a try. It really is Midwestern Mom five-star cuisine!

  Epic Cheesy Potatoes Recipe

Peel potatoes and slice very thinly. (We use the slicing side of a grater.)

In a shallow baking dish, place one layer of potatoes. Cover with sliced onion, American cheese slices and salt and pepper.

Repeat layers of potatoes, onion, and cheese, until the dish is nearly filled. Add milk, filling this dish to about 1-inch deep.

Microwave, uncovered, until finished cheese is melted and potatoes are cooked through. This takes a while. I usually cook in five minute increments. Check doneness, and then cook more if needed.

Who the Heck is D.M. Guay?

D.M. Guay writes about the intersection of real life with the supernatural. She's an award-winning journalist, a hobby urban farmer, a painter, and a retired roller derby player. She loves B-movies, tiki bars, liquid eyeliner, the 1968 Camaro, 24-hour horror movie festivals, rock concerts, and people who make art, despite adversity, no matter what life throws at them.

Some of the profits from her annual book sales go to research into kidney cancer treatments and cures. She was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in December 2017, and is still alive and kicking, two years after her oncologist said she'd be dead.
