“Oliver!” Madelena protested.
He sat her down and looked deep into her eyes. “You have made me the happiest man in the world.”
“Every man wants an heir.”
“It is not that, Maddie. I love you to the point that it is hard to breathe. Even if you could not give me any children, I would feel the same. I thank God every day for bringing you into my life.”
“I love you too, Oliver.”
His lips found hers in a deep kiss. He raised his head and gave her that smile.
“You know, all the workers have gone home for the day, and there is a perfectly good bed right here.”
“Oliver!” she protested. “There are no locks on the doors. Someone could come in.”
“Let them.”
She laughed. “What am I to do with you?”
“Do to me what I plan on doing to you.”
A wanton smile came to her. “Which is?”
“Love me forever.”
“That can be arranged.”
Oliver carried her over to the bed. The remainder of the day, he made love to his wife. As the sun began to set, he pulled her closer to his naked body and smiled. His past life was just an empty shell without Madelena. He did not know what he would do without her. Without destroying her baskets, he would have never met her. Without the trials of her past, she would not be here in his arms for him to love forever.
Madelena sighed as she felt Oliver’s arms tighten around her. The misery of her childhood was now replaced with joy. She had a family who accepted her for who she was. They did not care that she was the illegitimate child of a slave. They did not care that her mother was a quadroon. All they cared was that she loved and cherished Oliver. She was happy. The love she had longed for her entire life was now hers. And all of it came about because of A Chance Encounter.

Born in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, she grew up in Owingsville, a small town in Eastern Kentucky. She graduated from Morehead State University with degrees in Business, Health Promotion and Nursing.
