Rupra Bruda sat staring out the window. He was impatiently waiting for a call from General Bratford. He knew the Chancellor was anxious to find out if Peter Turner had been killed or captured, but there still was no word out of Pegaport. His communicator finally beeped.

  “Yes, General.”

“They are working hard to clear the entrance to the mine. Apparently there was a battle there and the cave entrance took a direct hit. There are tons of rock that must be removed. The Liberator and his friends are likely dead, but there’s no proof yet. Seven TGA soldiers were killed by the Drogals. Twenty-two were wounded in the gun battle.”

“That’s not the news I wanted to hear,” Rupra said.

“I know, but it’s the truth. There is nothing we can do about it.”

“What about the fighters? Have you found them?”

“No,” General Bratford advised. “They must have them hidden or camouflaged. We have searched the area but have found no sign of them.”

“Skutz! . . . This uncertainty is killing me. Videl is going to be livid.”

Have you heard from Evohn?” General Bratford asked.

  “No. Not a word.”

The general sighed. “Well, I’m sorry. I’ll contact you the moment we have news.”

Bruda severed the connection, stood up, and walked out of his office and down the hall to the Chancellor’s office, but was told that the Chancellor was out and wouldn’t be back for several kyloons. Dejected he went back to his office and stared out the window.
