Ten more minutes, she told herself, glancing at her watch, and then you must go and call Letty about next week. With a contented sigh she put the empty cover of her diary down beside her and closed her eyes.
‘So this is how you conduct your brilliant career.’
Ellie wheeled round and, shading her eyes upwards, saw Theo standing at the top of the cliff path.
‘I don’t believe it,’ she said delightedly, scrambling to her feet. ‘I wasn’t expecting you for hours.’
‘Caught an earlier flight.’
‘Stay there, I’m coming,’ she called and started to slither back down the rock towards the steps, pulling her bag across her shoulders, scooping up her plimsolls, running eagerly to meet him.
‘Hey,’ he called. Not so fast, you’ve left something behind.’
She paused and looked back to where he was pointing and laughed.
‘Don’t worry,’ she said, glancing to where the black leather diary cover was lying empty and open on the top of the rock. ‘It’s not important any more, not important at all,’ and she began to climb the stone steps to where he was waiting, hand outstretched to pull her up the last three steps.

While researching and writing this book, the help I was given by many people who have been ‘let go’ has been truly helpful. They know who they are. I would like to thank my good friend, writer, Lee Wilson for his input which is much appreciated, and for the most valuable advice and editorial contribution from my editors, Imogen Taylor and Susan Opie.
