Liam wore his work uniform, completed by a lab coat. Michelle wondered if it was the same one she borrowed when they slept together.
“This thing will never be the same though,” Liam gestured, answering her question in a blush that sent Michelle down memory lane. “Where’d you find your costume?” He asked. His eyes trailed down her body, lingering at her breasts a beat too long.
“I got it last minute, but it fits great. Maybe I’ll make a career change,” she winked.
Michelle had chosen to dress up as a nurse to poke fun at Liam, though he didn’t seem to mind.
“Do you want to go and talk for a minute?”
“Okay.”
He took Michelle’s hand. She could feel her heartbeat slow in her chest, taking solace in the fact that the hardest part — showing up, was over.
“So, you saw my pumpkin,” Liam stated once they were in his bedroom. They sat cross-legged on the bed, facing one another.
“I did.” She took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, this is really hard for me.”
“It’s okay. No judgement.”
“I have some commitment issues. That’s why I acted so crazy the other day, and I’m sorry. But I think I’m ready to move past all that… If you’re willing to be patient with me.”
She watched as his plush lips formed a smile, one so sexy it sent heat right to her pussy.
“I will be as patient as you want me to be. And I’ll try to stop being such a dick,” Liam said.
“You’re not so bad,” she teased.
“So we’re seeing each other,” he stated.
“Okay.”
“Okay, then.”
They sealed the deal with a long, slow kiss.
“You look really, really pretty by the way.”
“Thank you.”
He kissed her again.
“Come on, let’s go back to the party. I want you to meet my roommate and her boyfriend.”
Michelle dragged Liam forcibly out of bed, searching for her Bree in the next room.
“Already found the wine, I see,” Michelle teased when she located them by the bar. “Jake, Bree, this is Liam.”
“So, this is Dr. Douchebag,” Bree giggled, tipsy. “We’ve heard a lot of stories about you.”
“Oh, really?” Liam’s brows raised in amusement.
They shook hands warmly, and Michelle relaxed a little. Bree had a radar for assholes, and she wasn’t sending any bad signals her way.
“What do you want to drink? We’ve got wine, beer, punch, shots…”
“A beer, please,” Michelle said.
One appeared in her hand. After a while, another. Then another. The four of them were having a great time. The guys even bonded over work, discussing their worst emergencies.
“Well, I’m not allowed to discuss specific patients, but let's just say I’ve seen a lot of things stuck up places they don’t belong,” Liam laughed. His arm found Michelle’s waist, lingering there as they chatted.
“Oh, trust me. I’ve walked in on a few odd situations myself,” Jake said. “Once a couple accidentally super-glued themselves to their roof. Don’t even ask me how that happened.”
They all laughed.
The night went by quickly in a blur of drinks and conversation. Bree and Jake slipped out around one, leaving Michelle and Liam alone by the bar area. Only a few guests remained in the living room.
“I think we should play truth or dare,” Liam said, a glint in his hazel eyes.
“Are we in high school or something?”
Liam nudged her playfully.
“Come on, it’ll be fun. Better than beer pong. Or darts… you wouldn’t believe how many dart accidents I’ve seen.”
She pursed her lips.
“Are you afraid?”
“No. I’m not afraid of you,” Michelle laughed. She was, a little. She felt tipsy and turned on by Liam’s charisma. He’d fallen effortlessly into the conversation with her and her friends all evening, as if he was meant to be there all along.
“Ladies first.”
“Okay. Truth or dare?”
Liam responded without missing a beat.
“Truth.”
“Hmm, brave soul…” Michelle laughed. She took a swig of her beer, pondering. “So, why did you send me the pumpkin after ignoring me all week?”
“It stopped mattering who was right and wrong. I just wanted to see you.”
Michelle’s stomach fluttered.
“Oh. That’s sweet. I’m glad you did.”
He held her gaze.
“Truth or dare?”
“Truth,” she said bravely.
“Why are you so afraid of being in a relationship?”
Michelle swallowed.
“Going in for the jugular, I see.”
“Come on. No judgement, remember?”
She took a deep breath.
“I get wrapped up in ‘shoulds’ really easily.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like… my life ‘should’ look a certain way. My parents always taught me there was only one way to live properly. I ‘should’ have a brilliant career. I ‘should’ have a marriage and children by now. They liked my ex because he believed in all that stuff. And even when things were falling apart, I tried to keep us together because I thought I ‘should’,” she smiled. “Problem is, I don’t like being told what to do, but I don’t know what I want. And that’s scarier than all the ‘shoulds’ in the world.”
Liam’s eyes softened. He hauled Michelle into his lap, ignoring everyone else in the room.
“You know what?” He kissed the top of her head.
“What?”
“You don’t have to follow a pre-made life plan. I think you’ve done amazingly well for yourself, and you should be proud of that. Your ex sounds like an asshole.”
“He was,” she laughed. “Anyway, enough about him.”
“Truth or dare?”
“Dare.”
“I dare you to kiss me again.”
Liam’s tongue slipped into Michelle’s mouth. Before she knew it, they were full-blown making out in the middle of the living room.
“I dare you to…” he murmured.
“I didn’t say dare.”
“Okay. Truth or dare?”
“Dare,” Michelle giggled.
She wasn’t sure what she’d been so afraid of.
“I dare you to ride me. Right here. Right now.”
Michelle looked around. The room had emptied.
Finally, they were alone.
His statement parted Michelle’s lips in intrigue. She went over to the door. The lock clicked when she flicked it shut.
Her heels came off.
One by one, she undid the buttons on her nurse costume.
It fell to the floor.
The music guided Michelle there too, lowering her inhibitions — along with the alcohol. Like a cat in heat, she crawled across the wood sexily on all fours, stopping between Liam’s open legs. She widened them with both hands, tracing one finger up to his crotch. Lightly, she squeezed his cock through his pants.
“Michelle,” Liam groaned and chuckled at once. “Are you a little bit drunk, maybe?”
She responded by tugging his scrubs down.
“Mmmm… maybe just a tad.”
She continued to palm him over his black briefs, harder now. Michelle felt herself growing wet as Liam watched with wide eyes. His eyes lingered on her body as she tortured him.
“Fuck this, I need to be on top of you.” Liam groaned. He picked Michelle up and brought her to the sofa, dropping her on hands and knees. Standing behind her on the floor, he leaned forward.
Liam pushed her panties to one side.
His fingers brushed and toyed with her wet folds, soaking the thin material. She was more than ready when he finger-fucked her. Bordering her edge when he leaned forward and stuffed her full of his tongue.
“Liam. I want you. Inside of me.” She panted, overcome by arousal. Her body was sending her imperative signals that she didn’t dare deny.
“Call me your boyfriend.” He commanded.
A ‘zing’ went through Michelle, unexpectedly so. Who would have thought that being called Liam’s girlfriend would have been a turn on?
“You’re my boyfriend, Liam,” she said in a breathy voice that was far from intentional. Still, she liked it. She loved it when Liam took charge of her. It was his inner douchebag coming through in a way Michelle could fully appreciate.
He spanked her ass loudly.
Michelle felt the wet tip of his cock around her pussy. He spread her folds with it, rocking back and forth. Torturing her as she’d done to him.
And just when she was about to scream in frustration, he pressed in all at once.
All. At. Once.
She was full.
Michelle felt every inch in ecstasy as it rubbed her from the inside. Stuffed her. Slid into her. Liam leaned over Michelle’s back and played with one of her hard nipples. His other hand squeezed her hip, daring her to move with him. Every beat of the music did just that; edging them deeper into their bliss.
“Come for me.”
Liam clasped her sensitive bud between two fingers and toyed with it, making Michelle explode. It took her by surprise, coming on demand. Yet something about Liam’s voice coaxed it right out of her.
“Fuuuuuck.” Liam groaned as he buried himself deep, hitting his climax too. He bathed her insides with moisture as his cock jerked to its maximum.
They fell over the edge together.
When the wave subsided, Liam lay beside Michelle, lazily kissing the back of her neck.
“That was… amazing,” she said.
She felt Liam nod.
“Spend the night?”
“Gladly.”
Liam brushed her lips, savouring her taste.
“You promise you won’t sneak out this time?” He asked.
“Promise.”
When they finally fell into the sheets together, still smelling of sex, Liam held Michelle with his solid body. She was taken aback by how easy it was to do this again — stay the night with someone on purpose. Promising she wouldn’t be sneaking away the next morning. Trusting her heart. Committing to see where this would go. Yet, here she was, sandwiched between Liam’s comforter. She’d realized something else in the still of the room; the reason she didn’t want to sneak away. Michelle had finally become open enough to let someone get close to her. And it was a damned good feeling after all this time.
It wasn’t a big deal.
And it wasn’t like they were getting married.
But that single moment was the bravest revelation Michelle had made lately. It made her feel stronger than a hundred push-ups at the gym.
“Night, ‘chelle,” Liam mumbled beside her. He squeezed her tighter.
“Goodnight, Liam.”

Six months later: Michelle’s birthday
“Where’s the birthday babe?” Liam announced, stepping foot into Michelle’s living room, Jake by his side. It was a rainy April day, but that didn’t matter with what Liam had planned.
“Michelle?” He called.
Bree appeared at the foot of the stairs.
“She’s not coming out. She’s too upset about turning… well, you know. I’m not allowed to say the number out loud.”
“Oh, fuck.” Liam’s face fell. He kicked off his shoes and hurried up the stairs.
“Baby, come out. We have a fun night planned.”
“I don’t want to.” Michelle’s sobbing voice came through the door. “I’m old. What’s the point of even celebrating that?”
“Come on. You have lots to celebrate.”
“Like what?” She pouted.
“Well,” Liam chuckled, “Like me for starters. And I have a question that I want to ask you that I think will cheer you right up. Don’t make me carve it into a pumpkin… they’re really hard to find this time of spring.”
Silence hung in the air as Michelle debated her options.
She could spend her birthday pouting in the washroom, doing face masks and painting her nails while she skimmed social media (which actually sounded very appealing), or she could be with the people who loved her.
How could she resist?
“There she is!” Liam’s smile dazzled her when she cracked the door open. His gaze drifted lower. “You look amazing. You’re lucky we’re late or I’d…” he trailed off, a glimmer of drool on the corner of his mouth.
“Such an animal,” Michelle teased him, suddenly feeling better. She’d already forgotten why she opened the door in the first place.
Then it came back to her.
“Hey. You said you were going to ask me something.”
“Oh,” Liam grinned. “Right.” He cleared his throat and took a step toward her.
“Will you move in with me?”
Michelle nearly tripped on her own ankles. The feeling spread over her. It consumed her mind and her heart.
But it wasn’t fear this time.
She was so happy he’d asked.
“Obviously I will,” she smiled. She lept into Liam’s arms and he swung her up in the air once, showering her with kisses.
“Okay, lovebirds. Let’s head out before this goes any further.”
Bree’s voice broke them apart.
“We’re late, Liam,” she added.
Michelle smoothed her hair, pulling her skirt back down to her knees.
“Where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise.”
They took her there in Liam’s range rover. Jake drove, while Liam held his hands over Michelle’s eyes in the backseat.
“Okay, guys. You’re starting to freak me out.”
“Relax,” Liam whispered into her ear, sending shivers down her spine. She calmed down.
Finally, when they lifted the darkness from her eyes, Michelle couldn’t believe where she was.
“Surprise!”
It wasn’t a fancy club.
It wasn’t a huge party with tons of people.
It was her favourite restaurant — a cute pub downtown — and a long table of her closest friends and family.
Her heart had never been so full.
“I can’t believe you guys did all this for me,” Michelle said, fanning her face of happy tears.
“Only the best for my best girl.”
Liam kissed the side of her cheek.
In the past, Michelle may have been mad about being surprised on her birthday; control freak that she was. She may have thought she ‘should’ be doing something crazy or life-altering to mark her new age. Not anymore.
She was happy where she was.
The birthday girl took a seat at the head of the table, her man on one side, Bree on the other. When a cake appeared in front of her, alight with the glow of candles, there was only one thing to do.
Michelle didn’t need a wish, so she kept one thing in mind as she blew them out: how grateful she was for the gift of life, exactly as it was.
She wouldn’t change a thing.
