The Chinese in the west were always a consideration, but whether it was because of fear of the virus or superstition or just plain indifference, they had never crossed the Mississippi in the intervening years as far as anyone knew. Randall believed if they left the Chinese alone, they, in turn, would leave the survivors in the east alone. I hoped he was right. I also worried. Worried that the bigger and more sophisticated we got, the more of a curiosity or threat we might become to them.
Hopefully, that was a long way off. For now, it was time to enjoy the present.
“You know what, Luke?” I said. “I don’t think so. I don’t think it does get any better than this.”
