When she caught him staring at her, she debated what to do. Tilting her head to the side, she asked, “Do you want to come in? And watch?” she added hesitantly.
“Um, what do you want me to do?” he replied. He shoved his hands in his pockets.
It was clear from the look on his face that he didn’t think it was necessary for him to watch. “Why don’t you stand over there. You can like,” she motioned towards the front of the store, “check out the office space.”
“Okay.” He shrugged, feeling useless.
She pulled down her pants and sat on the toilet. She felt stupid sitting on the toilet with the door open. It was like she was showing him too much, which was ridiculous because he’d been up close and personal with that area of her body countless times over the past six weeks. She shouldn’t be embarrassed.
She opened the box and took out the test. Then she set the box on the counter. “This is it,” she said, looking at the stick.
He peeked around the corner, and they made eye-contact. He gave her an encouraging smile. “Do it,” he said. “I want to know if I’m going to be a daddy.”
When he woke up this morning, being a daddy hadn’t been anywhere on his horizon. But now, he found himself oddly intrigued by the notion. He had a thriving business. He was doing well financially. They could afford a baby, even hire a nanny if they wanted to.
“Okay,” she breathed out. Relaxing, she did her thing. Now they just had to wait for the symbol to appear. She set the stick on the counter and pulled up her pants. “Now we wait.”
He stepped beside her and wrapped his arm around her back. It didn’t take long. The little plus sign signaled that their lives were about to change.
“We’re pregnant,” he said. His heart raced and excitement flooded his body. He scooped her up in his arms and spun around in a celebratory circle. She squealed and reveled in his happiness. Her nerves and anxiety about being a single mom didn’t seem so overwhelming if she’d have his support.
He set her down and then instantly went to one knee. Holding her hand, he gazed up at her. “Senna, I know this is fast, but in some ways it isn’t really. We loved each other ten years ago. You were my everything. Then things got messed up, but we are back on track now. When I’m with you, it’s like that decade of separation never existed. We belong together. And this baby is just one more proof of that.” He paused and held a finger up to signal her to wait.
He looked around for something to use as a ring. Not finding anything, he reached for the toilet paper dispenser and tore off a sheet. Then he ripped the sheet in half and rolled it into a rod shape. After forming it into a circle, he took her hand in his and said, “You were the first woman to hold my heart. You were the first woman to break my heart.” He laughed as if it didn’t matter. “Will you be the woman to heal my heart? Will you marry me?”
Her heart was beating a mile a minute. She stood in shock, just trying to comprehend what he’d asked her. She’d never imagined that he would propose on the spot like this. A few hours ago, she was worried about telling him she could be pregnant. But his proposal was sincere, and she wasn’t a fool.
“Yes,” she gasped. “And I promise, no more secrets.”
He slid the toilet paper ring onto her finger and stood. Sliding his hand behind her head, he whispered, “No more secrets.”
Then, with the gentlest of kisses, he held the mother of his child.
