This steamy standalone is the second in my Forgotten Dragons series!

Each book has a new couple, heated romance, thrilling shenanigans and a happy ending, but you still might want to read them in order, since the characters are related!

  Here’s the first:

Dragon Next Door (Forgotten Dragons 1)

  Thanks, and happy reading!

  Chapter 1

“I would do anything to rev his throttle.”

Janet Dixon pushed her glasses up on her nose as she eyed the woman next to her, whose whole face seemed to have gone slack.

Turning toward the club’s entrance, Janet immediately realized the source of the woman’s lustful gaze.

  Xander had entered the building.

And heaven help every woman in the vicinity, he’d gotten a haircut.

Before, his slightly shaggy dark-blond hair had helped to soften his gorgeous features. That, along with his constant smile, made him practically approachable.

Which was saying a lot since the man was six feet six and absolutely stacked with ripped muscle.

But he’d cut his hair to look more like his twin Tristan’s, shaved short on the sides and left longer on the top, and now his striking, model-perfect face was revealed in all its glory.

Combined with his gleaming white smile, the most vivid blue eyes she’d ever seen, and the fact that he owned enough leather to supply a small biker convention, the effect was devastating.

Janet took a drink of her virgin piña colada, suddenly wishing she hadn’t agreed to be the designated driver.

The IT girls at her work all telecommuted, so they liked to get together and go out and have fun.

Too much fun, if the way some of them were currently dancing was any indication.

Janet shook her head as she turned back to her drink, already looking forward to curling up with a nice, sexy book and a toy when she went home to—

“Well, hello there, gorgeous.” A deep voice rumbled from behind her, making Janet jump.

She slowly lifted her eyes to a hard male chest, then up farther to vivid blue eyes. Xander leaned on the bar next to her, perfect lips curved up in a devastatingly crooked smile.

  She sighed. “Stalking again?”

“Not stalking. Wooing.” He slid onto the stool next to her, ignoring the woman nearby who was openly staring, slack-jawed.

Tonight, he wore a black leather jacket, as usual, some kind of band tee shirt, distressed jeans that stretched over powerful quads, and work boots that gave him just the rough edge he needed to be a panty tsunami.

“Same thing,” Janet muttered, hoping that if she just paid no attention to him, he’d go away.

Every other single woman in the club wanted him. Why couldn’t he go bother one of them?

Just because her best friend was dating his twin, it didn’t mean they needed to have anything to do with each other.

“Come on, Jan,” Xander said, turning on his stool to face the dance floor and, consequently, put that gorgeous face in her sightline. “You’re killing me here. What do I need to do for you to give me a chance?”

She pinned him with a glare over her glasses. She was head of her IT department. Settled in her life. The type that took care of everyone and accepted bullshit from no one. “Xander, you just need to accept that you’re not everyone’s type.”

“I’m every human’s type,” he muttered, not even seeming that pleased by the statement.

Janet snorted. “Then you should have no trouble finding someone to dance with.”

“I want to dance with you,” he said stubbornly, folding his huge arms and making the rich leather of his jacket crinkle.

Janet’s fingers itched to touch the sumptuous fabric—and the skin underneath, if she were honest. But she knew better than to play with fire, and Xander was hotter than a meteor.

“Is this all just because I ghosted you a few weeks ago?” They’d danced when her bestie Kelsie had brought Janet to meet Tristan, her new boyfriend.

And Janet had only made it half a song with Xander before realizing she was in way over her head.

Dancing with him again would definitely be dangerous.

  And fun.

“If I do, will you let it go? Stop bothering me?”

He cocked his head. “No. Because I think you like me bothering you.”

She flushed deeply, hating her pale, redhead skin for making her so transparent.

He grinned over at her. “Just one dance? We never finished ours.”

  She sighed. “Fine.”

He put out a hand, but she didn’t take it as she got off the stool. He shrugged before heading out onto the dark, flashing dance floor, confident she would follow.

As Janet watched that wide, strong back moving into the crowd, she hesitated.

Right then, the bartender, a pretty young woman with a nametag reading, “Ash,” came to collect her glass.

“Be careful,” Ash said, shaking her head and staring at Xander’s retreating back. “That one’s a heartbreaker.”

“What?” Janet asked. She’d figured as much, given what a player he seemed to be, but it was different hearing it from someone who knew him.

“He’s a total jerk,” Ash said. “Stay away from him. That’s all I’m going to say.” She took Janet’s glass and walked away in a huff.

Xander had stopped and was looking back at her expectantly, and as Janet’s eyes roamed over all six and a half feet of him, she reminded herself that a dance in the dark couldn’t break her heart.

She slid off her seat, grateful she was in practical black pants, a white blouse, and comfy flats.

Her red hair was back in a professional bun, and her pale, freckled skin was dusted just lightly with powder and a hint of blush.

Xander waited for her and then placed a hand respectfully on the small of her back as they moved through the crowd. Just that small touch made heat instantly curl inside her, and suddenly, it was hard to breathe.

The next thing she knew, she was in the center of the floor and he was pulling her into his arms, and she felt totally encircled by muscles and leather and the smell of rain on windswept pine trees.

She breathed in deeply as one of his hands moved to cup her hip and the other caught a loose lock of red hair.

She couldn’t help but love the way she felt short with him. It was a rare feeling as a rather tall woman.

“You’re gorgeous,” he said, coming in closer, his hand winding around her waist and pulling her hips to his.

&
nbsp; She moved with him easily, longing for more touch. “Your tricks won’t work on me.”

“Tricks?” He continued to wind the curl around his finger, bringing her closer. “What tricks?”

“You…” It was hard not to stutter when he had a hold on her like that. “You don’t need to try and seduce me.”

“I’m not trying to seduce you,” he said, finally pulling her in enough that her hands clutched his chest and their bodies were pressed together all the way down their thighs.

Janet felt herself grow wet at the contact. Oh well, she didn’t call him the panty tsunami for nothing.

She heard him chuckle as he released her hair and cupped her cheek, gently tilting her face back.

His eyes were like blue flames lighting the darkness. “Though, I sometimes get the feeling you’d like to be seduced.”

  “No!” Liar.

He pulled back again and moved both hands to her waist, swaying smoothly in a way that made it impossible to watch anything but his tall, muscled body. “Are you sure?”

She knew her face was bright red, giving her away, but she nodded. “One hundred percent.”

He cocked his head. “I don’t know what you think my intentions are, but I honestly just want to take you out sometime. Get to know you better. What’s so wrong with that?”

What was wrong with that was it was just how seducers worked. They were charming and sweet at the start. All chase and no follow-up. Janet didn’t need that in her life.

“I told you. You aren’t my type.”

His lip quirked. “So your type isn’t super handsome and strong and awesome?”

She choked out a laugh. “You’re incorrigible.”

“So I’ve heard.” He smiled as he caught one of her hands in his and slid the other to the small of her back, bringing her close in a semblance of a ballroom position.

A naughty ballroom position, given the proximity of their hips.

She looked to his hand, so warm and big closed around hers. She felt led and protected as he held her close. She supposed that was the draw of men like this.

How they fooled women like her mother.

Though their position appeared slightly proper, the way Xander lowered his head to hers was anything but. “If you won’t give me one day, then give me one night, Jan. After that, you’ll never want to let me go.”

That was what she was afraid of.

“Xander…” Her voice was raspy, more like a moan. And as his lips got closer to her ear, she couldn’t seem to convince herself to move away.

“You can’t even dream of the things we could do together,” he said. “The ways you’ll come. I’ll make you so wet you’re dripping, and I’ll lick up every drop.”

Her jaw fell open as arousal surged through her. “I…” She trailed off, breathless, more wet than she’d ever been in her life.

He put her hands over his shoulders and let her press her body up against his, setting her on fire from head to toe. “Let me take care of you in every way possible.”

Her mouth was dry, her palms hot on his skin, her pussy practically clenching.

  Oh God…

She looked up into those vivid blue eyes, those almost otherworldly blue eyes, and wondered how many other women had fallen for these sweet words.

Then she pushed him away so suddenly that, with his heavy weight, she was the one who stumbled back. As she stared up at him, flushed and wanting, aching to ignore her sanity, she clenched her hands into fists.

“No. This isn’t happening. Look, our friends are friends. That’s all we have in common. I won’t let this go any further.”

His eyes flinched, but he shoved his hands in his jean pockets, showing no inclination of pushing her.

She was both relieved and disappointed.

“Fine,” he said sharply. “But you can’t even imagine what you’re missing.”

As he turned on his booted heel and disappeared into the darkness on the other side of the club, Janet felt a little bit guilty.

But he was wrong about one thing. She could imagine what she was missing.

And she’d be imagining it all night until she got home to her vibrator and got off to the image of him in her mind.

  Chapter 2

Xander let out a curse as he walked around the perimeter of the dance floor and made his way back to the bar without having to see Janet.

Of course he wanted to, but she’d turned him down so hard that if he went to her now, it really would be stalking.

He let out a grunt as he plopped down on one of the stools, leaning on one elbow and drumming his fingers on the polished wood bar.

It was just his luck that he’d been turning down human women for close to a century, but the one woman he wanted hated his guts.

He couldn’t figure it out either. She was attracted to him. That was more than obvious by the way her pretty cheeks heated, the way her hands held on to him, her body pushed into him, and her breath sped up.

But for some reason, she wasn’t going to indulge either of them.

Which made things difficult, since she was definitely Xander’s mate.

Now that he and his twin were working with the double dragons in their area, they were able to officially seek mates, and Xander thought the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

He’d wanted Janet from the moment he saw her.

That red hair. Those luscious curves. The height that made it so he didn’t have to bend in half to kiss her.

Sparkling green eyes that heated with lust and defiance in the same moment.

“You suck.” A sudden voice interrupted his thoughts, and Xander looked up and groaned when he saw who was speaking.

“Oh, Ash, give it up,” he said.

Her eyes narrowed. “No. Because you suck.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you mad because I don’t suck?”

He smirked as her eyes widened in shocked offense, and she stomped away.

Xander tried to be kind to humans. As a dragon, he felt naturally protective of most of them. But some of them made it hard.

And when Ash, who clearly hadn’t taken many of the hints he’d given her, had cornered him by his truck, trying to push herself on him, he’d had to do something he hated more than anything else.

  Hurt someone’s feelings.

Clearly, she still wasn’t over the sting of it.

Xander felt a bit bad about it, but there was nothing he could do. He was a one-woman dragon, and he’d just met that one woman.

A woman who was now heading toward the dimly lit hallway toward the bathrooms.

He was unable to stop himself from getting up to follow her, glad that her height and vivid red hair made her easy to spot.

He’d hopefully stay back enough that she wouldn’t notice. He couldn’t help being protective toward her, but he also didn’t need to be accused of stalking again.

He stayed on the edge of the crowd, gently waving away female entreaties as he made his way toward the hall.

What he saw when he peeked down it made his blood cold.

Janet was confronting a man with pasty skin and dark hair, removing his arm from a woman who quickly ran back to her friends.

Xander’s hands tightened into fists, ready to charge to the rescue when the guy turned his attention to Janet.

To Xander’s shock, Janet swiftly brought her foot up into the man’s groin, making him howl as he fell forward onto his knees.

“That’ll teach you,” Janet said as Xander stopped a few feet into the hallway, his heart pounding in his chest like a prisoner trying desperately to get free.

“Security!” Janet looked around, hands on hips. “Guess I’ll have to go get them.”

The men with the guy helped him up, and they glared at Janet before pushing their way out of the back entrance.

As Xander scented the air, he frowned.

  Wolves.

Janet was already checking to make sure the other woman was fine, and the tw
o of them were laughing and smiling at each other in the hallway.

Xander felt cool rage wash over him. Rage at the men who dared to look at her. Rage that she hadn’t even tried to come find him or ask anyone for help.

His mate didn’t trust him to protect her.

She turned to see him and cocked her head with a frown. “Xander? What are you doing here?”

He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to hide his hurt and focus on the fact that she was okay. That was all that mattered. “Uh, just headed to the bathroom.”

“Well, the men’s’ room is that way,” she said, pointing past her.

“Can we talk?” He lowered his voice, putting a hand on her elbow, and she nodded, rolling her eyes as she walked with him back to the main floor of the club.

“What is it?” Her tone was impatient. She looked barely ruffled by the encounter.

“What were you doing back there? You’re not some superhero.”

She folded her arms, pushing her generous breasts up in that perfect white blouse she was wearing. She adjusted her glasses. Damn, he wanted to just remove those glasses, let her hair down, and—

“I was just doing what any decent person should,” she said. “Stopping harassment.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Did it ever occur to you to get backup maybe? Or ask for help?”

Her brows lowered. “No, should it? I took care of it, didn’t I?” She smiled. “Self-defense was my hobby in college.”

He sighed, putting a hand to his temple. His mate was going to give him a headache. “You are strong. But when it’s more than one guy, don’t you think—”

Her expression hardened. “Xander, I don’t really see why this is any of your business. I did what I wanted to. Everyone is fine.”
