  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

CAROLINE ANGUS BAKER is a New Zealand author. A trained sailmaker, Caroline has gone from long hours behind sewing machines, to competing in national sailing competitions, to attending international sailing regattas. She has cycled down Hawaiian volcanoes, been served dinner by billionaires, bumped into supermodels and movie stars, fumbled to find the right words on Italian live television, walked the red carpet at fashion events, fought off Moroccan muggers, soaked up a Norwegian Christmas, watched whales in Canada, slept on the floor in Dubai, played in the German snow, partied on the Great Barrier Reef, got lost in London, passed out in Thailand and dodged bushfires in Australia. A Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Italian culture and years of keeping a diary of life in Spain later, Caroline returned to New Zealand, and began to write all she had seen and heard. After a Diploma in Business, and thousands of hours studying the Spanish Civil War, Spanish and bullfighting history, it became Caroline’s time to turn to fiction. From growing up humble in small town New Zealand to travelling the world, she now lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband and four young sons. Another adventure could be just around the corner.

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Throughout this series, the list of people who help me write kept growing. As always, five special gentlemen get my profound thanks – Grayson, Torben, Espen and Lachlan for letting their mother pursue her interests, and my husband, Martyn, for accepting that our house won’t always look good, but my manuscripts will.

To my editor, Sue Sharpe, for her endless help with Spanish, dreaded commas and far more. You have made so much time for me and my mistakes, for which I will always appreciate. I truly having someone I can trust reading my work. Thank you to Mary Mixon, my ever-faithful proof-reader, you have always got words of encouragement for me.

As always, the members of Writers and Bloggers about Spain (WABAS) who provide little tidbits about everyday Spanish life, which I can pepper into my work. I can ask any inane question and an answer always comes back. A special thank you to Graham Hunt for the invitation to the group.

Thanks to the inspirational torero, Jose María Manzanares. From outfits, schedules, media engagements and everything in between, it’s great to see what a real-life bullfighter does.

The Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica (Association for the Recuperation of Historical Memory) or ARMH does an incredible job of recovering bodies buried during the Spanish Civil War. Despite the obstacles, the association fights on to recover as many victims as possible, and needs endless support. See www.memoriahistorica.org

Thank you to the Shadbolt family for their intimate insights into the life of New Zealand nurse Renee Shadbolt, who bravely battled in Spain during the civil war and to the International Brigade Memorial Trust for the continued information and inspiration.

During the five years of writing this ‘Secret of Spain’ series, many other writers have provided endless insight for me. From the very beginning, I have recommended Ghosts of Spain by Giles Tremlett, who gave me the very first seeds for the books. Thanks you to the inimitable Paul Preston, for his grand works and service to the history of Spain, especially Triumph of Democracy in Spain. I couldn’t have done without this book while writing Death in the Valencian Dust. Also for the Franco biography and Juan Carlos: A People’s King. These are just a few of Preston’s great works I would recommend.

A big thanks to Edward Lewine (author of Death and the Sun) and Alexander Fiske-Harrison (author of Into the Arena) for the amazing insights into the world of bullfighting.
