The House That Alice Built Page 28

by Chris Penhall

Alice, Luis and Antonio stood in silence for a few moments.

‘Well, that was a bit of a surprise,’ said Alice eventually.

Luis smiled. A door slammed behind them. ‘I think Antonio has left the building,’ he said.

  Chapter Twenty-Two

‘I saw this house,’ said Luis as they walked through the old town the following day towards the square. ‘But I had to stop myself from thinking about it. I want to concentrate on the farmhouse. I need to. But there was something about it … look it’s down here.’

They stood outside the grubby little yellow cottage with the dilapidated ‘for sale’ sign on the door. Alice smiled. ‘I noticed it too. Someone needs to love it. I had to give myself a good talking to. I haven’t sold my house in London yet. And I was going to be leaving.’

‘I had a call from the agent earlier,’ said Luis. ‘I have rented out the refurbished house. Looks like I am going to be a landlord. And someone is keen to buy the house I am living in. They just haven’t seen it yet! So all being well, I’ll be moving into the farmhouse soon.’

‘That’s wonderful news,’ said Alice. She stroked the wall. ‘I wonder if it’ll still be for sale when I finally sort myself out.’

‘We could do it together. I could buy it, and you could give me your half when you have sold your house.’

Alice threw her arms around him. ‘That’s such a lovely thought,’ she said. ‘But you haven’t signed on the dotted line for your other two yet, and I think the next house I make will have to be mine and mine alone. Just the next one though. Just because I have to.’

Luis kissed her. ‘You are very wise, Alice. So when you finally move into my beautifully and lovingly refurbished farmhouse, should I charge you rent?’

‘Yes. Or I’ll buy half of it … or ….’

‘You know it will all be all right, don’t you? I can’t see Adam fighting for long. I only saw him for five minutes but I could tell he had no commitment to anything.’

‘Well, we’ll see,’ said Alice. ‘When it’s finally done, which could take a while, will you come to London to help me move out? My house means so much to me. I’ll need you to hold my hand.’

‘Like I said, I will be with you every step of the way. Now say goodbye to the little yellow house,’ said Luis.

‘Goodbye little yellow house,’ said Alice. ‘For now, anyway.’

‘Later, do you want to see some friends of mine play? For the Latin music band I sometimes play in. It’s relaxed you know?’ said Luis. ‘Just fun.’ He took her hand and they continued down the hill.

Alice turned to glance at the little yellow house. It looked like it was glowing.

When Evie is invited to the wedding of the guy she’d fancied throughout her teens, it’s the final straw. What’s wrong with her and why can’t she keep a man?

Perhaps the cure for her disastrous love life has been nestled within its pages all along …

  The Purrfect Pet Sitter

  Carol Thomas

A fun, feel good read that you will not want to put down.

  Highly recommended!

introducing Lisa Blake, the purrfect pet sitter!

When Lisa Blake’s life in London falls apart, she returns to her hometown rebranding herself as ‘the purrfect pet sitter’ – which may or may not be false advertising as she has a rather unfortunate habit of (temporarily) losing dogs!

But being back where she grew up, Lisa can’t escape her past. There’s her estranged best friend Flick who she bumps into in an embarrassing encounter in a local supermarket. And her first love, Nathan Baker, who, considering their history, is sure to be even more surprised by her drunken Facebook friend request than Lisa is.

As she becomes involved in the lives of her old friends Lisa must confront the hurt she has caused, discover the truth about her mysterious leather-clad admirer, and learn how to move forward when the things she wants most are affected by the decisions of her past.<

Is love powerful enough to cross the class divide?

When Daniel Davenport saves Maddie Lockett and her young brother Tom from drowning, an immediate bond is forged between them.

But Daniel is an aspiring doctor and son of a wealthy manufacturer, whilst Maddie is a potter’s daughter from a poverty-stricken area of the Potteries. Even a friendship between the two could be frowned upon, let alone anything more …

But Maddie and Daniel want more, and as they grow closer gossip and prejudice look set to spoil their blossoming romance. Do the young couple stand a chance when there are those who would stop at nothing to keep them apart?

  The Best Boomerville Hotel

  Caroline James

A feel good, witty read and perfect for anytime of the year!

Let the shenanigans begin at the Best Boomerville Hotel …

Jo Docherty and Hattie Contaldo have a vision – a holiday retreat in the heart of the Lake District exclusively for guests of ‘a certain age’ wishing to stimulate both mind and body with new creative experiences. One hotel refurbishment later and the Best Boomerville Hotel is open for business!

Perhaps not surprisingly Boomerville attracts more than its fair share of eccentric clientele: there’s fun-loving Sir Henry Mulberry and his brother Hugo; Lucinda Brown, an impoverished artist with more ego than talent; Andy Mack, a charming Porsche-driving James Bond lookalike, as well as Kate Simmons, a woman who made her fortune from an internet dating agency but still hasn’t found ‘the One’ herself.

With such an array of colourful individuals there’s bound to be laughs aplenty, but could there be tears and heartbreak too and will the residents get more than they bargained for at Boomerville?
