Murder in March Page 22

by Camilla Chafer

"Take care," I told her, giving her a quick hug before she left. I felt sorry for Derry. She seemed smart and sweet and I hoped life would be kinder to her now. Perhaps with Derrick's help, it would be.

"There's going to be a lot of guilt flying around," said Mark. "Not the least of it aimed at Derrick for not manning up years ago. What do you want to do now?"

I took his hand and walked over to the cash desk. "Do you have my package?" I asked Holly.

She nodded quickly. "Yes, I do." She rounded the desk and reached underneath, pulling out a bag of books I selected and paid for earlier. "Hope you enjoy them."

"What did you get?" asked Mark. He teased the bag open, peeking inside. He smiled broadly.

"Lots of travel guidebooks. Talking of all that flying around," I teased, as I tucked my arm through his, "it's time we started working out where we're going on our first adventure. We have a very exciting, and very real life to begin to live!"

Vanessa Wright never planned on coming home to Calendar. When her relationship ends, her job disappears, and she finds she’s inherited a former Inn from her great aunt, it seems it’s finally time to return to the sleepy mountain town she grew up in, not that she plans on staying. All she needs to do to get back to her life is fix up the inn and find a buyer.

Blackberry Inn has lost its looks over the years, going from gorgeous Victorian-era splendor to dilapidated, and it’s going to be one helluva a job to bring it back to its former glory. Fortunately, Vanessa isn’t afraid of a little hard work. Yet during her first night alone in the big old house, she finds a dead body on the veranda, and indications the man might have broken in. Who is the failed burglar and what does he want from within the old inn? When the attempted break-ins increase Vanessa needs to find out what the dead man’s mystery accomplice is looking for, or face being the next victim.

With the help of her contractor and old friend Nate Minoso, Vanessa must solve the dead man’s murder, find out what he wanted to steal, and make a big decision: is it time to put down roots or turn her back on her hometown, and Nate, forever?
