Prologue
Baron
She was a beautiful, blonde, magical woman and as I watched her talk to others at the party, I got to see her from the outside looking in. There was something about the sound of her voice and the way she looked over at me that stopped my heart. It was the way she tossed her hair when she was nervous and wrapped it around her finger that took me to a place in my head.
I couldn’t stop the feelings that flooded over me, and the need that coursed through me every single time I looked at her. Kayla was the one for me, the only one for me, and that was never going to change. No matter what happened, no one and nothing was going to change that. Her father wanted to keep me away, but I wasn’t going to let him ruin the best thing that had ever happened to me. Kayla was more than just a lover. She was my partner in crime.
I moved over to where she was talking because of what was in the back of my mind. I knew that I didn’t have a lot of time left before I ravished her right here in this room in front of all of these people. I was the one that suggested this party, and now I wished I hadn’t. It was only taking away from time that we could be in bed together, me deep inside of her. Nothing beat that in my book.
Stopping in front of her, I kissed her cheek and then whispered in her ear. “Let’s get out of here, baby. I can’t keep watching you from across the room. I need you on top of me, coming and screaming my name. I got to feel you, Kayla.”
Her eyes got wide, and I loved the way she looked when she pulled back and looked at me. It was hard for me to fathom what life would be like without her, and I knew that I never want to try. She set the beer down on the table next to her and moved into my arms, wrapping her arms around my neck. “Then take me away Baron. I think I need some of what’s in your eyes.”
I grinned at her and leaned down to kiss her. The smell of her lilac perfume overwhelmed my senses, and I couldn’t stop myself from deepening the kiss, even as I heard jeers from people around us because of our public display of affection. Those red lips and amber eyes kept me enthralled, and our kiss lasted long enough that we were getting encouragement from the crowd to take it off. I pulled back once I realized what I was doing. I grabbed Kayla up and dragged her out of the house with me.
“Where are we going?”
It was too late, and I had had too much to drink to drive anywhere, but I didn’t have to. The old house in the woods was a great party house and since there were other buildings on the property that overlooked the valley, there was always somewhere to go. I took her hand and led her out deeper into the woods to our little spot. This is where I felt the most comfortable, and Kayla never did mind being out here in the sticks with me. We’d spent a lot of time in these woods, and we both knew the way to a specific place that gave us the privacy that we needed. The town was small, and there was too much gossip to ever really get away. Out here was the only way to not get caught together and have the information to get back to her dad.
“You know where we’re going, Kayla. We’re going to find out where that kiss takes us.”
She giggled, let go of my hand and skipped up the path. I didn’t want to even try to keep up with her. She was faster than I was on these paths. Kayla had grown up in Shady Way. I moved here a few years ago when I was sent to a local family for foster care, and I still didn’t understand all of the town’s ways, though I’d learned they were shady.
“You have to slow down. How are you not worried about falling out here? I can barely see a thing!”
Kayla had a bit more to drink than I did, but it didn’t seem to faze her in the least bit. She moved as if it were daytime, and she hadn’t had five beers plus a few shots. I don’t know if it was just memory or not, but she was always the one that led me out here.
“It’s fine, Baron. Why are you always so worried about me? You act like I’m made of glass, and I am going to break.”
She was fragile to me. It felt like it. Life was fleeting, and I wanted to keep her safe. Something in me told me that Kayla needed me to protect her, though I still wasn’t sure from what.
“You’re just important to me Kayla, that’s all.”
Her smile was all the answer that I ever needed, and I couldn’t help but return it. It wasn’t long before we were standing in front of the small house that was almost a complete replica of the original house where the party was going off, just smaller. It was the perfect place for us to have a little fun. Before long, I could smell a joint burning, and I knew that Kayla was in the mood.
I followed the smell and got to the back room where we usually went. It was the biggest room and still had carpets in it. The carpet in the rest of the rooms had been ripped up for one reason or another and banging on the hardwood floors was not so fun.
“Do you want some?” Kayla’s hand outstretched to hand me the joint, but I s
hook my head that I didn’t.
I already had a buzz from smoking a couple earlier, and I was just now getting my head on right. I instead watched her as she leaned back on one arm and smoked half of it before putting it down. I knew what came next, and I was already rock-solid thinking about it. I liked her when she was this way, relaxed, horny and on the prowl. I could see it in her eyes, and she was the only woman I’d ever met that made me feel like I was prey.
She took her clothes off slowly, always liking to put a show on for me, and I appreciated every slim line and curve that her tanned skin offered. Her hair was falling down her shoulder, covering up the rosy tips that were on my mind most. Moving closer, I slid the yellow hair back and smiled at her. She was so innocent, and I’d changed all of that. I was accused of being a bad influence, and I was. Her friends thought that I was taking her down the wrong path, and the realization was that I was. Now Kayla was downright wanton, and I knew I had a hand in it. Before me, she’d never known the touch of a man. Now, she couldn’t get enough of it.
“Do you want some?”
The same question was posed, but the offer of what she was asking about had changed. My eyes were taking in the new offer that was splayed out in front of me in lace, and it was one that I wasn’t able to say no to.
“So badly, Kayla. You’re all that I ever want.”
She grinned at me and moved closer. My heart was pounding in my chest, and everything that I knew to be true and good came from her. The draw was magnetic, and I moved the last few feet to her, pushing her back as my body covered her bare one.
I could taste the weed on her lips and then on her tongue as she stuck hers in my mouth. It turned me on, as well as the beer. I don’t know why, but her tasting like that made it that much sweeter. She did everything with me, and a lot had changed since we’d met the year before. Kayla was the sheriff’s daughter. I met her in the back of a police car going to detention. She was on her way home and got a ride. It was the best mistake that I made that year and ever since.
Lifting her up, her body felt like nothing, and she was wrapped around my cock before I could take it really. I felt her insides crushing around me, and I closed my eyes to the pleasure. How could I give her up?
Kayla whimpered and pulled me closer. She was trying her best to keep it all together, but I knew that she was going to lose it quickly. She always did and before long she would be screaming my name in a way that made me grow cold inside. For some reason, I couldn’t get enough of Kayla. She was the most powerful of all drugs, and I was drunk with it.
“God, Ky. You don’t know what you do to me.”
She giggled and then moved herself. I was the one with closed eyes that was going to lose it. She felt amazing and before long, I wasn’t able to think straight. The sounds coming from her were getting louder, and I couldn’t stop myself from groaning loudly as I filled her. It was too soon, way too damn soon, but I could feel her fluids as well as my own, and I was thankful then that she came so fast. Usually I left Kayla in a puddle, but something about this night made it all the more intense. I don’t know what it was, but I was trying hard to fight the need that I had inside of me, no matter how hard it was. I wasn’t done yet. I wanted more, and Kayla pushed off of me and wanted a break.
Neither one of us was going to get what we wanted.
Before either one of us could get dressed or convince the other for a second round, the door to the small house burst open and it was like my worst nightmare was playing out in real life. Her father, the sheriff, busted in and our eyes met from across the room. I knew I was fucked. The man hated me, and now he really had a reason to want me dead. I’d never seen someone so mad in all of my life.
“You son of a bitch!” His face was bright red. and he had a vein poking out of his neck.
That was my cue to take off, and before he could get another step into the house, I was grabbing clothes and going out the back door. While Mike hated me, and he wanted me dead and gone, the rotund man would never catch me once I got into the woods. Kayla could see better, but I was still fast enough for that old man.
I looked back to Kayla. “I love you, Kayla. Always remember that.”
She told me that she loved me too, and Mike told his daughter to get some clothes on. “I will deal with you later, young lady.”
That was all that he said to her before I was out of the house, and he was in pursuit. I knew that I just had to get some distance between us in the open air and then he would never catch me. Not tonight anyways, but he wouldn’t let it go. The man was going to chase me to the ends of the earth if I let him.
I was just about to a clearing where I could pick up speed and get the sheriff out from behind me, but all of a sudden, an arm came out of nowhere and close lined me. I fell back and hit my head on the hard ground. The last thing I saw was one of Mike’s deputies looking down at me with a grin on his face that was haunting.
“You really should watch where you’re going. Baron. You might find yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in.”
That was the last thing I remembered until I woke up with a bucket of cold water being splashed in my face. The face that was in front of me now was different than the one before. It was Big Mike, and I smiled back at him to show him that he hadn’t gotten to me. I shouldn’t have. He already hated me enough, but there was something in the air that was different tonight. Mike was going to take the law into his own hands. Or his and his deputies’ hands. I saw a couple of them by the car that were inching closer. I knew them all and I didn’t like the fact that they wouldn’t look me in the eyes. It didn’t bode well for what was about to go down here.
“What the fuck do you think you’re doing out here with my daughter? Didn’t I tell you that she was not for you and off limits? Did you really think that I wouldn’t find out? Your friends ratted you out as soon as we crashed your little party.”
He had said that several times, and the last time he’d put a lot of threats behind it if I didn’t stop seeing her. I would have if it was anyone but Kayla. I couldn’t give her up, and if he truly knew how I felt, he wouldn’t even have asked me to. I was never going to give her up. I just couldn’t. She was meant to be with me, and even though we were young and had a lot to learn, I already knew who I wanted to spend the rest of my life having adventures with. We were both adults and as soon as school was out, I was going to convince her to leave this place with me. I figured there had to be better places. There just had to be.
“I love her, and you can’t keep us away from each other. She’s an adult.”
He grinned at me and shook his head like I was being silly for saying that. “You have no idea what I’m capable of, Baron, or you would have left town a while back. Now you have to pay. I won’t do it myself, of course. Don’t like to get my hands dirty, but I am going to love watching you learn a lesson that your daddy should have taught you a long time ago. Don’t go for the girl out of your league.”
“And when it’s over, I’ll have her back in my arms tomorrow night. You know I never had a daddy to teach me them sort of things.”
The old man looked like he wanted to kill me and imagined that he did. “When this is over, you’ll be underground, son.”
The words washed over me, and I pulled at the bindings. It was the first time in my life that I feared what was about to happen to me, and it was then that I started to feel strange. Pain coursed through me with a power that I’d never felt before. When I pulled on the ropes this time, they broke without any effort on my part. The chains only took a little bit more to get out of. I was free, and my attention was paid to the deputy, Ralph, that had knocked me down earlier. He was the closest and as he screamed, I lunged for him, no longer the same man that had been tied to the tree moments before.
I’d changed. I had changed into something else altogether.
The fear was palpable from the trio when I moved closer after ending Ralph’s screams. This was going to end tonight, but not in the way
that Mike thought. It wasn’t going to end in the way I thought either.
“What the hell are you?”
Chapter 1
Kayla
“We got another one.”
I sighed to myself and started to get up. I was stopped by Freddy. “Your dad wants to see you before you go. Can you hurry up?”
I didn’t like the sound of that. I’d been promoted to detective, but I was the only one getting called into the office like I was still in school. The second one was mine, I had the first, but he was calling me in. He didn’t like me on the case, and now I had to go see if Dad was okay with it. He wasn’t, and he was going to pressure me to back off again. I knew then that there was a reason behind it. Dad thought it wasn’t safe, but he had to let me do my job. He was the one that promoted me after all. It was time that he trusted me or no one else on the force was ever going to.
“Thanks, Freddy.”
Freddy grinned, and I knew that he was thinking what I was thinking. My dad didn’t trust me, so why should he. The man was supposed to be my partner, but it didn’t feel that way, and there was a lot of animosity between us, partly because he was the one that wanted the higher post. It didn’t help that I was the first woman in Shady Way to make detective, and it wasn’t taken well by some of the guys. Freddy didn’t want to be paired up with a skirt. That’s what he called me, and it drove me nuts.
I marched to the Sheriff’s office and shut the door a little harder than I probably should have. I know that there were some people that would see it as disrespect, but he was my dad after all, and if he was going to embarrass me like that, I wasn’t going to take it lying down.
