DAUGHTER OF A HOOD LEGEND
BY LATOYA NICOLE
To my daughter. I remember when I sat in front of the doctors when you were three years old and they told me that you were on the spectrum. Immediately, I began to cry. It hurt my heart that it was another battle you had to fight. You had already been through so much, and I couldn’t stop the tears from falling. That was until I knew what that meant. I had no idea I was getting a beautiful, very smart, funny, different, and loving child. You have brought me so much joy and I can honestly say you changed me for the better. You are my everything and you will never have to wonder if anyone loves you. I will make sure that you are overflowed with love. You’re my heartbeat and I’m blessed to have you. Keep being you and never stop standing out. I LOVE YOU MIRACLE MONÉT RILEY
Kojack I will always love you and I miss you dearly. The void you left in me will never be filled, and I am grateful for the love you gave to me. If I never love another man again, I will know what it feels like to look you perfect mate in the eye. Your mama and kids miss you dearly. I try my best to stay strong for them, but I am broken myself. I’m one of those people that have literally gone through the fire. In the midst of it all, you gave me laughter and I will forever be grateful. Kiss the twins for me.

Prologue
KELLY… YEAR 1996
The pains hit me out of nowhere. I knew I was in labor, but I wasn’t supposed to have the baby for another three weeks, but here I was lying in a puddle of fluids. Looking over, I noticed Vicious was not home yet. Picking up my phone, I tried my best to stop my hands from shaking, but the pain was unbearable. Dialing his number, I prayed he answered. When it went to his voicemail, I couldn’t stop the tears that fell from my face.
Knowing I couldn’t bear the pain any longer, I called me a cab and grabbed my bag. The entire time, I kept trying to call Vicious. He was the love of my life, but his heart belonged to the streets. No matter what I needed him for, the streets came first. I knew what I was getting myself into when I agreed to be his ride or die ass bitch.
They called him Vicious, because that’s exactly what he was. His Kingpin status was passed down from his dad, but he ran it more ruthless. He didn’t give second chances unless it was me. If you even looked at him wrong, you were dead. Knowing how tough it was to run an organization as big as his, I tried not to complain too much. Tonight, I was pissed. He was supposed to be here and he knew it was no other reason I would be blowing his phone up like this unless it was an emergency. I never bothered him while he was out in the streets.
The cab came, and I continued to blow his phone up the entire way to the hospital. My nerves kicked in and I started to think something was wrong. The more I worried, the worse the pain became. By the time I reached the hospital, the shit was almost unbearable. The nurses helped me into a wheel chair once I walked inside. Barely able to talk or stand, I was glad they knew I was in labor. All the way to my room, I continued to dial his number.
Once I was placed on the table, I was so weak I could barely keep my eyes open. The nurses were setting everything up, when I stopped her.
“Please keep calling my husband. He needs to be here.” Taking my phone, she promised to keep trying. It took them no time to prep me and I was pushing before I was ready. I wanted to scream I
can’t so many times, but Vicious would fuck me up if he knew I was being weak. He didn’t tolerate that shit. Everything on my body hurt and I was weak as hell, but I knew I had to stay strong. Finding strength, I pushed like they told me too. I heard crying, then everything went black.
VICIOUS…
Me and my crew was waiting for Vega to allow us in his office. I’ve been trying to get him to agree to be my connect for a couple of years now, and he always turned me down. The nigga always said I wasn’t ready. I was already the biggest dope dealer Chicago had ever seen, but with him as my connect, I would be the biggest dope dealer in the world. His shit came straight from Columbia and he sold his shit pure and at unbeatable prices. I needed this deal to go through.
Kelly was blowing my phone up, and I was about to answer when Vega called us in his office. I knew she wouldn’t blow me up for nothing, but this would change our lives forever. After a thirty minute conversation, I was shaking hands with my new connect. Me and Fat back couldn’t stop smiling at each other. He was my right hand man, and this shit just put us over the top. We were about to leave when Vega stopped us.
“It is disrespectful to accept a deal and not allow me to bless it.” Looking at him confused, I thought his hand shake blessed the shit. “Yesenia, Rebecca come.” Two bad bitches walked into the office and I was lost on what he meant until Rebecca came and sat on my lap.
“No disrespect, but I’m married with a child on the way. I’m good.” Fat back was happy as fuck because he had the foreign bitch. Don’t get me wrong, Rebecca was one of the sexiest black bitches I’ve ever seen. Fat back just had a weakness for the other brand.
“You say no disrespect, but I just told you it is disrespectful to turn down my blessing. Now, either you take my gift or the deal is off the table.” I’ve never cheated on Kelly and I had never planned on it, but this was a once in a life time chance. I had to take one for the team. I could see the other two niggas I had with me looking salty, but they were nowhere near on this type of level yet. It was funny to me that Vega knew that and only had bitches for me and Fat back.
They didn’t even wait for anyone to leave the room. Our pants were down and my dick was down her throat in seconds. It was weird as fuck because Vega was watching and I had to will myself to stay hard. A few moments later, she was sitting down on my dick riding the shit out of me. Thirty minutes later, I was about to cum. Pushing her off, I came on her face and adjusted my clothes. Fat back was already done and I laughed at him cumming quick in front of the connect. Nodding my head at Vega, I walked out of the room with an eerie feeling. It was nothing I could do about it now, I just prayed Kelly never found out. As soon as I thought about her, my phone rang again. This time I answered.
“Mr. Barnes, this is Kelly’s nurse and she went into labor tonight. We need you to come up to UIC right now please.”
“I’m on the way.” Hanging up, I looked at Fat back and he already knew he had to get me there quick. Fuck. I should have asked her if I missed the birth of my daughter. Kelly was going to kill me if she went through that shit by herself. As soon as the car stopped, I ran inside asking for her room.
“A doctor will be to talk to you shortly, please have a seat.” Was she not understanding what the fuck I said?
“Do you know who the fuck I am? If you don’t let me back there with my wife, I will blow this bitch up.” You could tell she was scared, but all she did was pick up the phone. Reaching over the desk, I was about to break the bitch neck when Fat back grabbed me.
“Calm down. It’s not worth it. Kelly probably pissed because you missed the birth. Just wait on the doctor and talk him into letting you back.” Knowing how dramatic she was, I knew that’s what had to have happened. Sitting down, I waited until I saw a doctor approaching me.
“Hello Mr. Barnes, I’m doctor Noble and I helped deliver your baby girl.” Not wanting to hear all of the formalities, I cut him off.
“Nigga I don’t give a fuck who you are. Take me to see my wife and daughter. What the fuck. Are all of you mother fuckers smoking?”
“I’m sorry sir, but during labor there were some complications. Your wife suffered an aneurism and she died giving birth to your daughter. I’m so sorry for your loss. Your daughter is premature, but she is doing fine if you would like to come see her. I can also let you visit with your wife if you like.” This nigga lost his fucking mind. The wife of Vicious does not die without consequence. Grabbing him by his neck, I tried to pop his head off his fucking shoulders. He turned bright red instantly, and slowly began turning purple.
“You killed my fucking wife and think you gone stand in my face like the shit sweet nigga.” The pain that went through my body was indescribable. She needed me and I was fucking another bitch. It had to be someone else’s fault. I would never be able to live with myself if I admitted the truth. My girl needed me and I shitted on her for a bitch I didn’t even want. Fat back pried my hands from the doctor’s neck and I broke down. This was one night I wish I hadn’t been Vicious and chose to be David. If I had and answered the phone, my wife would still be alive. I fucked up and I would spend the rest of my life righting that wrong.

Cruising down the street in my 64 jocking the bitches slapping the hoes went to the park to get the scoop
Knuckleheads out there cold shooting some hoops
A car pulls up who can it be a fresh el camino kilo G
He rolled down the window and he started to say
It’s all about making that GTA
Driving through my city in my pink custom 64 Camaro, I blasted Boyz In The Hood by NWA. Whenever I drove this car, that was my signature song. I was that bitch and I wanted everyone to know it. Pulling up to the warehouse, I jumped out of my car careful not to scrape my red bottoms. A tom boy at heart, I was rocking some jogging pants, a tank top, and some high top Louboutin’s.
As soon as I walked inside, the room got quiet. Everyone knew to shut the fuck up and allow me to think. I hated distractions, but I hated for a nigga to plea for his life even more. If you bold enough to steal from me, I expect you to accept the consequences like a real nigga. Walking over to my cabinet, I stuck my key in the lock and opened the glass. Grabbing my signature seven chamber revolver, I sat down in front of Lil Keith.
“Are you feeling lucky?”
“Roulette, please don’t do this. I will pay you back every fucking dime. Just give me the chance to.” Looking over at everyone else in the room, I smiled.
“I guess he’s not feeling lucky.” Spinning the chamber, I pointed it at his head. “You know the drill. Two shots, two chances to live.” Pulling the trigger, his brain splattered over my right hand Glitch. He hated when I did that shit, but I never understood why he continuously stood behind the chair. “My bad nigga.” Somebody clean this shit up.
To everyone other than my crew, I was Kalina Barnes. Daughter of the notorious Vicious. The mention of his name still shook niggas, but he was retired. Just walked away from the life when I was born. Whenever I asked why he would give all of that up, he always say to give me a better life. My mother died giving birth to me and he walked away from the streets without a second thought. He did his best to shield me from the street life, but that shit ran through my veins. At twenty two, I owned every street in my city. A nigga couldn’t walk on them mother fuckers without my permission.
The only thing was, they had no idea it was me that was running it. In order to keep my father from finding out, I had to be a ghost. The streets only knew the kingpin name was Roulette. Even though it was 2018, niggas didn’t like bitches being in charge. They never found out it was actually a bitch until they were sitting in my chair playing my game. That’s how I got my name from my signature way of killing. If the nigga beat the game, they thought they would live. By the time the night was done, they ass was as dead as Pookie after that last hit.
My crew was the only people that knew who I was and if I thought it was a hint of disloya
lty, they had to sit in my chair. My chair and the fear of crossing Vicious’ daughter, kept them in check. I was like him in so many ways, I didn’t give second chances and I refused to tolerate weakness. I feared no nigga and I have taken down the best. The only person that put fear in my heart was my daddy. He gave all of this shit up for me and if he found out it was for nothing; my ass was grass.
Jumping in my car, I headed back to the suburbs. We lived way out in Sauk Village. It took me about an hour to get there and I had to check the time making sure I was not too early. Pushing in our gate code, I drove onto our estate. Our mansion was damn near a block long and armed with security twenty four seven. I couldn’t shit on this property without one of them smelling it.
The only safe place to hide was in the tunnels. My dad had them built just in case we had to make an exit. Nobody was dumb enough to come anywhere near this house, but he didn’t give a fuck. He always said, a comfortable man is a dead man.
Leaving my car in the driveway, I walked in the house like I was tired. My daddy was sitting at the island in the kitchen while Sophie our maid cooked dinner.
“Hey daddy. You’re getting old, all you do is sit in this big ass house.”
