We also had a serious issue brewing with the portraits. We simply could not risk them breaking their seals again, not both at the same time, and not with them knowing who had put them back. They wouldn’t let us live a second time.
No matter how my brain scrolled through options of where the vault could be, nothing came up, and we had to hope that Sasmita’s contact—whoever that was—would be able to help. She knew more than she was letting on, but she wouldn’t be able to keep her secrets forever. Not when we all worked and fought together so closely. It was a matter of time before the truth came out, and I would have to decide then what to do about it
Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that all of this had become far more personal. That I had to continue, not just because there was no one else to stop the dark mages and witches, or because we needed to find the vault before all our effort turned out to be for nothing. It wasn't just because Fiona was sick from whatever had wrapped her into this mess and needed a yet-to-be-determined cure. And as curious as I was about what Sasmita hid, that wasn't the defining reason to keep going.
Instead, I knew in the end, I would come to understand my magic. The one that manifested almost on its own accord, as if I did not control it, but it, in fact, controlled me.
Jada had been right all along: we shouldn't use our magic. There was something wrong with it, and now it was too late for me to back down. I would never be able to rest, not until I knew what lived in me, not until I understood what had happened on the mountainside here and what it all meant.
