I’d also told him about the night Rollins attacked me, and of course, he was furious. The department fired Rollins and his sons admitted him into a psychiatric facility for treatment down in Florida. His delicate mental state also called into question the legitimacy of his other cases, and the prosecuting attorney had been working with our lawyer to resolve Adam’s case and mine in order to avoid any future backlash.
“Wife, your phone is ringing.” Adam’s voice brought me out of my thoughts as he opened the door and handed me my cell. His black hair was still damp from the steamy shower sex we’d just had. I placed a soft kiss on his lips as I breathed him in, and then looked to see Tayia’s name on the phone display.
“Hey, Tayia. Where are you?” I asked, forcing myself away from my sexy husband before I attacked him right there on the porch. “Please don’t tell me you’re canceling? We were just about ready to start the grill.”
“Sorry, I’ve been cleaning all day and lost track of time.” Her voice sounded small and weak.
Uh-oh. I knew when Tayia got into cleaning mode, things were not good.
“What’s up? Is everything okay, hun? You sound upset.”
“I was cleaning my bathroom and I found three of those unused pregnancy tests you bought.”
“Oh?” It seemed like forever ago when I thought I was pregnant, but it turned out that it was probably stress mixed with miscalculation. “Well, just throw them out, I guess.”
“Right, I was going to, but now I can’t.”
“What do you mean you can’t? Why not?” I hated when Tayia started talking all strange. “Tayia, what’s the matter?”
“I took the tests, all three of them, and um . . . they came back positive.”
Whoosh. That was the sound of all of the air leaving my lungs.
“What?” I choked out.
“I’m pregnant.”
“Oh my God, Tayia!”
“I know.”
“OH MY GOD!” I screamed, and Adam opened the door with his brows furrowed and questions in his eyes.
“What?” he mouthed, but I shook my head and waved him off with my hand before walking further down the sidewalk and away from the house.
“Tayia. I’m just . . . wow. I don’t know what to say. Does Brando know?” I chanced a look over my shoulder and wasn’t surprised to see Adam right behind me. I glared at him, and he glared right back.
“No, Brando doesn’t know, and I’m not going to tell him.”
“You can’t keep it from him. He’s the father and he has a right—”
“I’m not going to tell Brando, because he’s not the father.”
“Wait? What?” Tayia never mentioned to me that she was seeing anyone besides Brando.
“I said Brando is not the father.”
“Well, if he’s not the father . . . who is?” There was a long silence on the other end as Adam and I stared at each other. He’d heard every word and was waiting for an answer just like me. I repeated my question, unable to stand the waiting a second longer.
“Who is the father, Tayia?” There was an even longer silence.
“Blake,” she whispered.
