And then he wasn’t human anymore but corrupted, his eyes dead, and I could sense it. I pulled my gun and shot him in the head before he could attack. “Be at peace.” I swallowed loudly. “I didn’t even get his name.”
“I’m sure that was on purpose, love,” Cerdic comforted. “He knew you’d have to handle him. He held on so you could, and he never hurt anyone like other corrupted. Aether made sure of it and so you had the blessing of the people whose land you will build on.”
I nodded, thinking it rather cold still. Wouldn’t it have been better to save them? Couldn’t She have saved so many more? Or was that the hands off part when She had me moving through a maze to get here? Was that all She could be involved? Help me to help others? It seemed too… Not enough.
I tucked my gun back in my holster and checked the papers. Sure enough, he’d signed over the whole reservation to me… And several others in the area. All I had to do was sign. Tears filled my eyes as I realized it was every reservation I’d seen on the map for all four states.
“They’re all gone,” I rasped, wiping my eyes so my tears didn’t fall on the papers. “All the Native Americans and people who lived there.”
“Some might have found other settlements,” Darius tried, his voice not sounding all that assured. He took the folder from me and kept flipping through papers. “There are huge ranches and even towns around here signed over to you. Can this be legal?”
“Probably not normally, but desperate times and all of that, but as long as it’s not federal land, I’m sure there’s some charter that could privatize towns or whatever so no one else can try and claim it as theirs,” Kristof muttered, taking a look as well. “Like some governors now calling themselves the USA leaders.”
“So we’re here, this is my coven,” I whispered, glancing around as worry filled me. It had taken so much to get there, and the idea of building a coven terrified me.
