A Match for Melissa Page 28

by Susan Karsten

“But what about you, Melissa? I don’t want to steal your dressmaker.” Mrs. Banting spread a hand over her chest.

“The ivory gown I wore to your ball will serve as my wedding gown.” Melissa turned to smile at Mark, and her lips trembled. “He was much in my mind and heart when I had the gown made—never knowing if I’d see him again.”

He cleared his throat. “Mr. Southwood, you recall giving me formal permission to court Melissa? She tells me you know my suit has prospered. I hope we can count on your final approval?”

“Yes, I heartily approve of this match. It’s a match arranged in Heaven—as is ours.” Melissa’s father put his arm around Mrs. Banting, and they moved off to the French doors.

“We’ve made a match of it, haven’t we, dear Melissa?” Mark squeezed her fingers.

Melissa’s heart swelled with bubbling joy. A blast of happiness like a warm wind swept through her, and she had a brief vision of many blessed years ahead with this man. “You, Mark, are my hero, friend, and perfect match.”
