  Chapter 1

“You worry too much, it’s going to be fine.” Sybil told her daughter as she watched her sip her cup of coffee pensively.

It was the middle of the afternoon, she had left the office and was just coming back from the doctor for the second time in two weeks. He had told her the same thing: she was in good health and the pregnancy will happen when the time is right.

Two years ago her life had changed from bad to dreamy when after discovering that she was pregnant by a man who wanted nothing to do with her or the baby she had met and fallen in love with Christopher when she had gone to work as a temp in his company. She had not believed it at first, that a handsome and wealthy man like him could have fallen in love with someone like her who was knocked up and had no money to her name but he had pursued her and broken down her resistance and had actually convinced her that he wanted both of them in his life. She had been married to him for two years and he had taken on her child as his own and they were very happy. Except that she could not get pregnant by her husband and she feared that he was going to leave her and find someone else who could. He treated her like a queen, showed her everyday what she meant to him and she could never bear to lose him. He had given her an important position at the company and she had actually found her niche and it was something that she was very good at.

“You sound like the doctor,” Sophia said with a grimace. She had told her assistant that she was going out to look at the building they were trying to acquire and that she should tell her husband if he asked. She had tried to call him herself but he was in a meeting and his phone had been off. She was secretly glad she had not gotten him; he would probably worm it out of her. They did not have secrets from each other and it was killing her not to tell him. She had mentioned it to him once and he had brushed it away saying that they were in no hurry and their daughter Christine was enough for now. So she had been doing this on her own and only confiding in her mother.

“Honey your insecurity about not getting pregnant by your husband is going to show through eventually; maybe you should talk to him about it again.” Sybil suggested gently, putting aside the books she had been stacking. She came over to sit in front of her around the cherry wood table that had actually been a present from Sophia. Her mother had protested that it was too expensive a gift especially for the bookstore but her daughter had insisted. “The doctor is right: you are placing too much on it and that’s why it is not happening.”

“Mom he also told me that it might be a psychological block because of what happened to me with Jeremy,” she added referring to the Christine’s biological father who had left her when he discovered that she was pregnant. “He said it might be my mind’s way of making sure it does not happen again.”

“Honey that’s ridiculous!” Sybil said with a shake of her head. “You know Christopher thinks you walk on water and he would never do anything to hurt you.”

“I know that mom but still maybe I have issues where that is concerned.” Sophia pushed aside the half empty cup of coffee.

She often thought that she was asleep and in an amazing dream and one day she would wake up and find that it had all been a dream. Things like what had happened to her do not usually happen to people like her and she kept expecting her expensive clothes to be turned into rags and the cars she drives to turn into the rat trap she had driven before she married Christopher. He had taken her to tour Europe for a week for their anniversary in December and it had been magical. That had been last month and they had made love the entire time they had been there and she had come back hoping she was pregnant.

“You have grown into a beautiful and sophisticated woman of means and one to be reckoned with.” Sybil reached for her daughter’s delicate hands and turned over the left one to look at the dazzling rings on her wedding finger. She dressed now in the heights of fashion and today she was wearing a very chic violet pants suit with a lavender blouse inside. She had on discreet diamond earrings in her lobes and a gold designer watch on her slim wrist that had been one of many gifts from her overly indulgent husband. A pale lavender cashmere coat was hanging on the coat hanger just inside the door. Her unprocessed thick black hair that went past her shoulders was wrapped in a neat chignon at the nape of her neck and her coffee and cream complexion was glowing with good health. She was incredibly beautiful and looked coolly confident. “You have nothing to worry about and everything to be thankful for.”

“I keep telling myself that.” She smiled and squeezed her mother’s hands tightly. “It’s just that everything seems so perfect and I am not yet used to perfect. You know how headstrong and autocratic Christopher is and when I am with him he is a different person altogether. He spoils Christine shamelessly and when I see both of them together I keep wishing that he was really her father and I want to cry at the injustice of it all.” She said biting her lip a little bit. “I love him so much and I would hate for anything to come between us, I don’t think I could bear it.”

“Nothing will,” Sybil told her firmly, patting her hands and looking up as a customer came in. “You will be fine.”

Christopher stared at the figures on his computer screen with a frown. They were certainly not addin
g up and he got impatient when that happened. He tapped his fingers on the solid shiny desk and looked at them again slowly this time instead of skimming through them. He had just come out of the board meeting which had dragged on forever and in the end he had stood up abruptly in the middle of Gregory Hill’s long drawn out speech about some tax shelter causing every one of their eyes to turn to him, stopping the man in mid sentence and had told them the meeting was finished. He had beckoned to his personal secretary and the woman had hid a smile and stood gracefully following him out of the large room leaving the men staring after them.

He was known to be tough but fair and not an easy man to cross. He treated his employees very well and they never usually wanted to leave unless he found that they were stealing from him. His eyes wandered to the lovely framed picture that stood prominently on his desk. It was a family portrait that had been taken last December showing them in matching green outfits that his wife had insisted they put on. She was wearing a shimmering green dress that showed her generous breasts to perfect advantage and blazing emeralds at her lobes and around her neck. Her coffee and cream complexion was amazing against the color and her beautiful white smile shone forth in the picture. Christine was in a very pretty green and white polka dot dress with a big green bow in her black mass of curls and her smile was as big as her mother’s, the child was a replica of her mother and they looked like two beautiful dolls. His only concession to the color scheme had been black pants and pale green shirt and thick cashmere sweater. His family and he could not believe it. He was totally and irrevocably in love with the two women in his life and they had him wrapped around their small fingers and he suspected they knew it.

He picked up the phone and called her. “Hi baby I called and you were in a meeting,” her soft beautiful voice that had the ability to spin him into a mass of desire sounded in his ear.

“I had to get out of there it was going on forever,” he told her, his voice softened. “Where are you?”

“I stopped by to look at the building and then decided to have coffee with Mom. I am on my way back to the office.”

“Could you stop by when you come in?” he asked her.

“Christopher Tang you are just going to take the opportunity to neck aren’t you?” she asked him with a sigh, a smile curving her lips.

“You know me too well.” He told her softly. “Hurry up and get here.”

“He said you are to come straight in Sophia,” Tiffany said with a pleasant smile, nodding her immaculately styled blonde head. Sophia remembered how envious she had been at the woman when she had just got here to relieve her for the time she would be off on maternity leave. How things have changed.

He was standing before his desk with his hands folded on his chest. It never ceased to amaze her that this totally handsome man was hers. His dark eyes sparkled as they looked at her and his springy dark hair was falling onto his broad forehead. He met her halfway and he pulled her into his arms. “What took you so long?” he asked her huskily, tilting her chin to look down at her. She was such a tiny thing and barely came to his shoulders even in her ridiculously high heels.

“I got here as fast as I could,” she murmured, putting her arms around his neck. “Now what’s the rush?”

“This,” he bent his head and took her lips with his hungrily. It did not matter if he saw her ten times for the day nor did it matter that he made love to her each morning before they left for the office; he could not keep his hands off her and it had been that way since he had first met her and it had not gotten old. The desire and love was still fresh and he still shuddered each time he was near her. She felt his heart beat thudding against her and she shivered as he pulled her closer to him.

They were brought out of their web of desire by Tiffany’s voice on the intercom. “I am sorry to interrupt Christopher but the call you have been expecting just came in.”

He dragged his mouth away from hers but still kept a tight hold on her. “Five minutes Tiffany.” He told the woman briefly. He bent his head and reclaimed her lips, his hands framing her face, his mouth tender on hers, his body aching for hers. “My baby,” he muttered, resting his forehead against hers and trying to regain his composure. “Get out of here before I forget I have a company to run.”

“See you later.” She kissed him softly on the lips and used her fingers to wipe the lip gloss off his lips and straightened his crooked tie somewhat. “I love you.”

He watched as she walked gracefully out of his office and closed the door behind her. With a sigh of frustrated desire he plowed his fingers through his dark hair and taking a deep breath, he reached for the phone.

“What have you found out?” he asked the person on the other line briefly.

“He is still in Australia and apparently has gotten himself mixed up with some rich guy’s daughter who is now pregnant by him.”

“The damned fool,” Christopher said gritting his teeth wondering why someone like Jeremy found it so easy to make women fall prey to him.

“Keep an eye on him,” Christopher said briefly before hanging up.

His expression became thoughtful and he made another call.

  *****

“Want more mommy,” Christine said with a pout of her lips. She was referring to the scoop of ice cream Sophia had allowed her after dinner. She had come home before Christopher because he had had a last minute meeting and she never liked to miss her daughter’s dinner at least. Lindsey had been with them since Christine was born and she was very good with the little girl, firm but gentle and Lindsey doted on her.

“One scoop baby girl and that’s enough,” Sophia told her firmly, almost giving in as her daughter’s bottom lip quivered as she got ready to cry.

“Is my little girl not listening to my big girl?” His achingly deep voice sounded just inside the doorway and the little girl let out a delighted squeal and pushed away the top of her high chair. She had ice cream on her cheeks and a bit on her nose, Christopher reached over and picked her up and hoisted her high in the air causing her to squeal even more.

“She just ate,” Sophia protested, she could not help smiling as she looked at them together. He doted on her and she adored him. When he came home, she forgot about everyone else including her mother and sometimes Sophia got a little jealous but she was so grateful for the two of them.

“How about a piggy back ride up to the bathroom?” he asked, winking at his wife.

“Yes daddy!” the little girl squealed jumping up in his arms.

“Okay let’s go and leave Mommy to clean up,” he pulled Sophia into his arms and gave her a soft kiss on the lips before making a noisy retreat into the direction of the little girl’s bathroom.

With a sigh she removed the top from the high chair and went into the kitchen with it. The daily helper had already left and even though Lindsey lived on the premises she had already told her to turn in for the night. Christopher had wanted to hire a live in helper but she had told him no, she wanted to be in some control of her household and besides they already had Lindsey living here. They had talked about building a house but they had not gotten around to it yet.

She went upstairs and heard them in the bedroom and she stood there in their daughter’s very beautiful pink and white bedroom and watched as he sat on the bed and read to her.

“I love you daddy,” Christine said suddenly, reaching up a little hand to touch his strong jaw. He stopped reading and captured her hand against his face and closed his eyes. Sophia’s heart constricted as she looked at the undiluted love on his handsome face. Her mother and the doctor were right; she just had to wait until her getting pregnant happened naturally.

  *****

Amelia handed her the files she had requested and the messages she had received before she came into the office. The girl had been with her for two years and several months and had proven herself to be more than just a regular employee but an assistant she had come to rely on over the years. Sophia had gone from
being someone who was feeling her way around the place to a person who had the hang of finding viable companies for Tang Holdings.

She was now in the middle of looking into a bookstore that had been very viable in its heyday but was now running into bankruptcy and she was thinking of them reviving it and keeping it as a part of the company. She already knew who she wanted to be in charge of it and even though she knew her mother was going to say that she was quite comfortable running her little bookstore, she knew she could persuade her to take up the challenge. The bookstore had been a top selling store several years ago but had been plagued by too many hands taking over. People who were more interested in lining their own pockets instead of providing a lucrative business.

She was planning on going to look at the place to get a feel of it before she spoke to her husband about it. She had come to realize that as much as he loved her world without end, when it came to business, his eyes were not covered by rose tinted glasses and he made sure everything was in place and in order before he made a decision or give the go ahead. It did not matter that she was his wife and the love of his life; she had to be prepared before she went to him with anything.

“Amelia I need the sales figures for the last five years on this and I also need to know everything about the managers as well,” she told the girl.

“Already on it Sophia, coming up on your screen now.” She said.

“You are a goldmine,” She told her assistant before hanging up to study the figures. She had learned a lot since she had been here and she had also learned from her husband as well. She studied the figures closely with a frown on her forehead and made some notations on a little notepad she always had with her. She was making a file and the file was getting quite large each day. She was almost ready to make her pitch.

Her intercom buzzed just then. It was her best friend Lorna and she realized that she had been planning to call her since she came in. “I know you are going to kill me but I really was planning to call you as soon as I finish doing some things here.” Sophia said apologetically.
