I turn and burst out of the room, past my brother and ignore his pleas to wait. I run out the front door, down the driveway and next door to Everleigh’s house, frantically knocking on her door, unsure if she’s even home.
The door opens and her father’s kind smile, a smile I pictured being on my own father so many times causes me to fall to my knees.
“M-Mr. Greene. Is...is Everleigh...h-home?”
“Come on in, sweetie. Come on in.”
He lifts me in his strong arms as I bury my face into his chest, letting everything I’ve ever felt come to the surface as I crumble in his arms. My whole world was turned upside down in a matter of hours and I have no idea what I’m going to do now.
