“No, you’re amazing. Everyone else can see it, now it’s your turn.” I reached across the truck and clasped her hand in mine.
“Thank you,” she said.
“No thanks necessary. Your work spoke for itself.”
I pulled into the small drive where I had poured gravel and parked. We both climbed out and I began unloading the stuff in a pile in the fire pit. I made sure to dump everything out of the bags, so she could see it all.
“You sure you want it all gone?” I asked.
“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” she said determinedly.
I handed her the lighter fluid. “Just pour enough to get it started. The fabric will take care of the rest.”
She nodded and took it from me. Once she was done, I passed her a box of matches. I watched with pride as she struck a match and tossed it directly onto the spot where she’d put the lighter fluid. The entire pile went up in flames.
“I love you,” I said to her. “I want you to know that.”
She looked at me in surprise before her face softened and she said. “I love you, too.”
I wrapped my arms around her as we watched the memories from her husband burn to ash.
