The First I Do Page 13

by Sarah N. Ham

Chapter Twenty-One – Now and Forevermore, Amen

“It has been 100 years since my great-grandma and great-grandpa were married, making them the longest-married couple in the world. They made this promise for my great-great-grandmother, and one hundred years later, they have remained together. We celebrate with them and their incredible story, and we pray for a hundred more. I love you two.” Our great-grandson, Ford Jr. announced.

I was 103 years old. Honestly, I may not have been fully aware at this celebration, but I did recall some sort of organic, gluten-free, cholesterol-free, trans-fat-free, MSG-free meal… It was amazing how in a hundred years people were still the same health nuts from the 1990s to the 2090s. Now at 2101, nothing significant had changed. The world still lacked common sense and courtesy. Fourteen other human-rights movements had changed the standards again and again. People still hated people, and people still loved people. Michael and I had lived through our country going through another handful of wars. There were over 500 dog breeds, nine newly extinct species of animals, and fourteen newly discovered species. I had owned 50 different forms of cellular phones, fifteen different cars, and lived in seven different residences.

But honestly, none of that mattered because those were only temporary material things. It was the man sitting next to me in his wheelchair who meant everything to me in those past 100 years. Michael, now, couldn’t walk on his own two feet. He had one hearing aid, 20/125 vision, had lost most of his hair, and yet, he had the same sparkling amber eyes. A lot had changed, yes, but my love for this old gentleman hadn’t. And come what may; I would love him for 100 more, till death do us part…
