“We're lucky,” Caro said. “We have it all. Not everybody does.”

“We are lucky. A good life, a good dog. And soon...” Shell picked up Caro's beautiful left hand with her own left hand to turn the canary diamond and the padparadscha sapphire in the light. Canary yellow, imperial orange, colors as bright as their shared future.

“And soon a secret wedding.” Caro felt very young when she giggled. The driver would be here promptly at eight in the morning to whisk them away. “Sure we'll be ready?”

“Hmm. Maybe we should go to bed early to make sure we get up in time.”

“An early bedtime sounds like a great idea.” Although Caro already knew they wouldn't be getting much sleep.
