In front of the barbershop, the group from Dudd Street huddled in the rain. They didn’t look so tough now. A couple of them lifted their heads to watch the limo pass by. Sash wasn’t with them. In fact, Mateo had heard he got picked up the week before and would be off the streets for a while.

He grinned out the limo window at the gang, even considered tossing them a little wave, though he doubted they’d recognize him through the tinted glass. Further down the street, they stopped at a red light. Mateo glanced out the rear window, back toward the barbershop. The tiny, soggy group still watched them. They seemed small and insignificant with nothing better to do than to stand there waiting for something to happen. But not Mateo. He and his friends were all heading back to his place to meet up with Mr. Obeneski for some fried ice cream and whatever else Mamá could dig out of the freezer. Life was good.
