The Nazis- a Warning From History Page 40

by Laurence Rees

Many academics also contributed to this work, but I have to start by singling one out in particular. Professor Sir Ian Kershaw was the series historical and script consultant on both Nazis: A Warning from History and War of the Century. He is the most exceptionally gifted scholar and he was of immense help. His contribution to this project cannot be overestimated, nor can my gratitude to him. Other academics were also extremely helpful; Professor Christopher Browning, Professor Robert Service, Professor John Erickson, Colonel David Glantz, Professor Vladimir Naumov, Dr Krill Anderson, Colonel Yuri Gorkov, Dr Sergey Sluch, Dr Svetlana Argasceva, Professor Alexander Chubarian, Nikita Petrov, Professor Aleksei Litvin, Dr Sergei Kot, Dr Yuri Shapoval, Dr Volker Riess, Dr Christian Gerlach, Andrej Angrick and Peter Klein.

I was also lucky to lead one of the most talented production teams in television across both series. Tilman Remme was the Associate Producer on the Nazis series, Detlef Siebert the Associate Producer on War of the Century. Both are journalists of exceptional gifts. The dedicated Assistant Producers were Sally Ann Kleibal, Sue McConachy, Corinna Stuermer, Martina Balazova, Tomasz Lasica and Alexandra Umminger. In Germany, Marita Krauss, Friederike Albat, Stuart Russell, Manfred Oldenburg, Marcel Joos and Frank Stucke also did important research for us. In Russia, Elena Yakovleva, Maria Keder, Elena Smolina, Stanislav Remizov, Eric Shur, Valeri Azarianc, Anya Narinskaya, Maria Razumovskaya, Maria Mikushova, Valentina Galzanova, Teodor Matveev and Viktor Belyakov all made an essential contribution, as did Roksolyana and Taras Shumeiko in the Ukraine. In Poland Wanda Koscia did a fine job for us, and in Lithuania excellent work was completed by Saulius Berzinis and Alicija Zakauskaite.

The ever cheerful camera team of Martin Patmore, Brian Biffin (alternating with Richard Manton) criss-crossed Europe and the former Soviet Union with me and put up both with my many foibles as a director and hotels in the East which lacked every conceivable amenity. Katherine Manners and Adrian Wood were outstanding as film researchers, as was Joanne King with picture research. Venita Singh Warner, Laura Davey, Harriet Rowe and Kate Gorst gave terrific support as Production Assistants as did, successively, first Stephanie Harvey and then Tanya Batchelor as my own assistants. Ann Cattini (ably supported by Shirley Escott when Ann was away on maternity leave) was the unit manager. I was fortunate that Ann worked with me for some ten years or so. Her management abilities are, in my experience, second to none, and she made a huge creative contribution to both these television series. I owe her more than I can ever repay.

John Kennedy did a terrific job with the graphics across both series and the film editors Jamie Hay and Alan Lygo both made a vital contribution. At BBC Books Sheila Ableman, Anna Ottewill and Martha Caute were always encouraging. Andrew Nurnberg remained a still point in all the various storms.

I need also to thank my co-producers. In America A&E/the History Channel and in Germany NDR. Without their support neither series could have been realised as they were.

Most of all, of course, I thank our many interviewees whose names are recorded in the eye witness section of this book. Their memories are priceless.

This book is dedicated to my daughter and two sons with their father’s love.
