Princess Paulina was dressed in deep purple, edged in silver and fairly dripping with diamonds. I had never seen such finery in my life, but it didn’t suit her at all, being somehow much too dark for her skin and hair. It seemed made for another woman entirely.
“Well, good night,” she told me when the nanny had finished arranging her golden tresses into a high, stiff updo. “I must be going now. Enjoy yourself.” She gave a bell-like, tinkly laugh and swooped out the door. Nanny followed her.
I was left all alone in the tower room. Going to the window I looked out, down, down, to the ground many miles beneath me. I wondered why the princess would choose to have her room in such a secluded part of the castle. But then, she was strange.
Suddenly an unreasonable fear crept up my spine. Hurriedly I rushed over to the door and tried the knob, my heart thudding in my chest.
Drat it all! I thought. It was locked.
