He wondered if he would feel her die. The way she had felt him die the moment he realized the truth about her.
”There’s nothing you can do for me, Aura.” He finally looked back at her, his eyes and his voice empty. “But I’ll do everything I can for you, and to make sure those pups have a better future to look forward to.” He stepped backwards out the door with a final lingering look through the house at the playpen, and there was a questioning look in his eyes that passed almost immediately, because for the moment, it couldn’t compete with the emptiness that had taken him over. “Take care of yourself, Aura. I mean that. If there’s anything I can do, you know I’ll never be far away.”
Aura watched him walk away after that, and though she didn’t say anything else, especially after his glance back into the house, she’d meant what she said. He was broken, and so was she, and so their pieces didn’t fit together anymore. But she wouldn’t give up on him. It was a promise she intended to keep.
