I have always tried to make the historical part of my novels reflect the daily life of the characters who inhabit them. I am obsessed with documenting their occupations, dress, gastronomy, and rituals.

An important part of the plot takes place in la Torre de Nograro, located in Valdegovía. Even though it is in ruins, I took the architecture of the fortified building as inspiration and used it as a model for the Tower of Varona, though its family history has no connection to the novel.

I decided to set a part of the novel’s plot in an imaginary town in Ugarte for obvious reasons. I chose the unpopulated region of Ugarte in Ayala, which appears in a document from 1040, because it participated in the area’s tithes.
