  Acknowledgements

Readers first: Betsy Gill, Betsy Kittredge, Byron Tucker, John Garrels, and Amy Harren, who overcame her alone-in-the-woods fears to critique several versions. Thank you all. I am equally grateful to my publishing guru, Michael Selleck. Courtney Maum pitched in with special advice.

I am appreciative of the time and assistance provided to me by the following:

William T. Fitzgerald, Jr. Chief of Police, Winchester, CT

Marisa Edelberg, Medicolegal Death Investigator, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, State of CT

Matt Ludwig, Chief, Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department

Dr. Richard S. Childs, Emergency Medicine, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.

Any and all errors are, of course, on me.

Thanks to Mark Scarbrough’s writing group. Helen Baldwin, Laura Didyk, Amy Harren, Molly Hinchman, Joyce O’Brien, Emilie Pryor, Frances Roth, and Tony Thomson steered me through the first chapters of this book with warmth and encouragement.

  Note from an Indie Author

In the long run, Kindle and the ebook craze did not destroy the printed book as was widely expected. When Amazon released its first e-reader twelve years ago, it sold out in five-and-a-half hours. I bought one. Instead what happened is that readers of mass market paperbacks, especially in genres like Romance and Mystery/Thrillers converted to reading on ebooks, and that decimated the sales of mass market paperbacks. Only the big-name, established authors - and I say this without rancor - find their books on the shelves in airports, supermarkets, and Walmart.

For indie authors to survive, we rely on reviews and word-of-mouth. If you enjoyed this story, please take a moment to leave a review and recommend my book to friends and family.

  Thank you for reading.
