Alpha Magic (The New York Shade Book 4) Page 24

“You are. And everybody knows it.” I had a feeling that that meant a lot more than I realized at the moment, but it made sense. Even that witch Allison where I bought those spells had known. I had minded then. Not anymore.

For now, we walked out of the Shade’s south entrance hand in hand. Neither of us had asked for a shortcut. We’d just enjoyed the walk, but now Damian’s car was parked right next to the sidewalk, and he took us straight to it.

Kit and his family were excited to get in. The little ones couldn’t get enough of the lights on the dashboard. They moved all over it and the steering wheel until Damian turned the ignition on. Then, they all rushed to the backseat.

Before taking us forward, Damian looked at me. “Sinea, if you don’t—”

“Stop.” I already knew what he was going to say and I didn’t want to hear it. “This is what I want. I want to be with you, Damian. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we do.”

His lips were suddenly on mine, and I hadn’t even seen him moving. It was easy to imagine now that I’d actually been a vampire. You don’t even notice how fast you move, so I was just going to have to get used to it. I grabbed his face in my hands and kissed him back.

“You had a life here. I just hate to think that it’s taken from you,” he whispered against my lips.

“I can make a life elsewhere. I can make a life anywhere, as long as I’m alive.” And I was alive thanks to him. If he hadn’t given up his freedom for me, I’d have been eating dirt now. As if I hadn’t loved him enough before that.

He smiled. “Let’s get going then. We have a long way ahead of us.”

“And a lot of stories to tell.”

“As many as you want,” he promised. He grabbed my hand and kissed my knuckles before turning to the windshield again. I turned to check the hellbeasts in the back, and they’d all made themselves comfortable on the leather seats. Kit and Dalia seemed to already be asleep, all wrapped up in each other.

I didn’t even get to see my apartment for one last time, but what the hell. The memories I’d made in there would be with me no matter where I went next. And I realized that this was the best thing for me. I was given exactly what I wanted, in a slightly twisted way, but still. I’d wanted to make a difference out there, to do more, to be more, and now my chance was here. It didn’t matter if the Guild tracked me or not. I would be out there, and I would fight for what I believed in, and if my beliefs were different from the Guild’s, I’d figure out a way to do the right thing regardless. After the few stories he’d told me, I had no doubt that Damian wanted the same thing.

And there was time to figure things out now that it was just us. A Prime vampire, an Alpha Prime sorceress, and a hellbeast family of seven. What could possibly go wrong?
