Insidious Nightmares Page 7

by Ellabee Andrews

“You weren’t worried were you, Laurie? You had to know that I’d come back. Remember? Breasts and war? No truer a motivator ever existed.” With my ear pressed against his face, I hear his whispered words easily, and shiver as his hands drift down my spine, coming to rest on my hips.

Over his shoulder, I meet Mike’s stare but no anger like when he discovered my shared kisses with the others exists. If anything, there’s a look of interest there that causes my body to flush hot, then cold, then back again in a torrent of anticipation.

“Hell, if he gets a greeting like that, and all he did was twists some knobs. What do I get? You know, the real hero here,” Fred’s smoky voice comes from behind me, and I squeal as I spin his way.

He's right that he'd had the toughest job with leading away the townsfolk as they'd sprinted after him. And if the burn marks in his striped shirt and the charred edges along his beanie are evidence of just how difficult it was, then he deserves the passionate kiss I lay on him. He smells of campfires.

“Damn, Laurie. That’s a greeting a man can get used to,” he says once I’ve allowed him a chance to catch a breath, and I smile softly at the soot darkening the lenses of his glasses.

“Well, you’re a hero, aren't you?” I respond playfully, and he winks.

“Hero may be a bit of a stretch,” Jase says as he joins us and slides his arm over my shoulder, sandwiching me between the two of their bodies, and turning us to face Mike who doesn't even blink at seeing us standing this way.

“What Jase failed to say is, did you get them all? Is it over?”

Jase and Fred share a look over my shoulder before nodding. Jase clears his throat. "Yeah, for this town? It's over. Don't know how far-reaching these oils go. This infection could be ravaging every town. And those assholes aren't easy to kill!"

"Hell no, they aren't!" Fred adds, face twisting. "A few of them escaped the explosion and were running around like human shishkabobs. We managed to take them out, but damn they stunk," he adds and Jase shudders.

Mike seems to think about this for a second, and then looks around, jaw tight. "Well, nothing we can do about the rest of the world. For now, our town is clean, and I don't know about y'all, but I'd kill for a patty melt," Mike says, and Fred's face pales and takes on a greenish tint.

On my other side, Jase takes on a distant look, but it only seems to last for a second before he shrugs. “I don’t know about a patty melt, but I’d kill for a good burger. Think the Waffle House is still open?”

I snort out a laugh and they all turn their attention to me. When I see them looking, I laugh some more. "I'm pretty sure we're the last four people alive here. We can go wherever we want. Eat whatever we want. Do whatever we want," I say in a tone dripping with suggestion. Yet, disproving that the mighty dick doesn't always rule and that sometimes a man's stomach is much stronger, they don't seem to catch the meaning at all.

As if the idea of eating is no longer appalling, Fred starts to walk off. He makes it three steps before he seems to remember we’re here and turns with furrowed brows.

“What the hell are we waiting for? We own this bitch. Let’s go to the Waffle House!” he shouts, and because his attitude is contagious, I run up to his side and take his hand.

It’s not long before Jase and Mike join us, and the four of us start our slow procession toward the bright lights of the neighborhood burger joint.

"Hey guys," I ask while we walk, remembering they still owe me an explanation. They all look my way.

  "What's up, Laurie?"

"Earlier, you said I started something with you all. What was that?"

They share a weighted look between the three of them.

"Just that we might fight, but we're good at other things too," Jase says vaguely and I tilt my head.

"Okaaaay… and those are?" I dig, hoping for more answers.

Pausing in his steps, it’s Mike that halts me with a hand on my shoulder before motioning around his bandmates. "It means, Laurie, that we may fight, but we're in a band too. Being on the road all the time means we've learned how to share."

My nose wrinkles. "Share? Like clothes and food?"

Another look passes between them, and Fred snickers, earning him an elbow in the side from Jase. The two don't say a word, so I keep focused on Mike.

"Yes, we share all types of meat. The kind that comes from a Waffle House, and the type that comes with a sassy mouth, black pants, and perfect tits. Hope you're ready for all that we plan to show you, Laurie," Mike starts, voice deepening. "Something tells me that there's not much you can't handle."

Swallowing thickly and trying not to look too eager, but failing when I nod quickly, I take them all in.

Do I want what they can show me? Hell, yes! But can I wait just a little while longer? When my stomach growls and they all laugh, I know that I’ll have to.

Still, just knowing I have so much yummy goodness to look forward to, makes my steps feel lighter as we resume our pace.

Along the way, we pass a few crispy corpses, their faces unidentifiable, and a couple of dismembered body parts too, but I don’t let it get me down.

I don't even pause at where I left Benji and his Sugar Granny clutching each other in the never-ending hold of death's embrace. Nope, not even that bothers me.

I’ve got three sexy guys at my side. Three that can kiss like the burn of whiskey, hold me tenderly with one breath, and swiftly cut down legions of the walking dead with the other. And they all want me.

If that doesn’t make this the best Halloween ever, then I don’t know what will. Because I’ve found my nightmares, and I never want to escape this dream.
