Dr. Brands grumbled and ran a hand through his hair. “Who would have thought a scientist would be asking for belief based on faith?”
The Kenyan woman lifted Chuki by his armpits so she could stare into the feline’s eyes. “Momma knows you’ve been somewhere. I can see it in your eyes.”
She held the gaze for a moment longer before breaking into a fit of laughter while the cat remained expressionless. She would have to concede her pet had indeed been somewhere else other than Kenya or even the blue planet she adored but it could not tell her the whereabouts – not today. The woman had had dreams of herself and her neighbors calling in vain for their missing cats. The dream portended the felines had been missing for weeks and that a talking blue and green cat had replaced them. She recalled a video chat with a young girl with pink hair. She returned her attention to Chuki.
“I know I’ve missed you.” The African woman remained perplexed, knowing that the cat hadn’t been out of her sight for more than a few seconds at a time yet had been gone for days as well. It was a troubling paradox for the woman who had to concede answers to larger questions would only come with time’s passing. Yet if time was not a constant in the universe, maybe her answer would come sooner than expected.
“Someday, when you’re ready Chuki, you’ll take momma to your little cosmic hideaway.” She laughed again and hugged the cat tightly in her arms.
Ten Days Later…
Joule gave birth to five orange kittens, but it was the one with the striking midnight blue eyes and unusual black whiskers that gave Miranda Ellis pause. The teen laughed and wiped away a tear. “What are you going to do next? Stick your tongue out?” Miranda laughed again having no doubt that the playful kitten would one day take her bet and do just that.
Afterword
As with all things in the universe, we are seldom alone or without a connection. Earth Cat Zero is no exception whether he lives in our universe or in another – both places appear to govern with a commonality of brotherhood, sisterhood or cathood if you will.
Big thanks to poet Kathy Cook who helped me write the scene in which Earth Cat Zero turns to astrology to find out if Einstein’s presumption about whether God plays with dice or not can be proven. Kathy’s knowledge of the tarot aided Earth Cat Zero to find his way by confirming what the feline may have already realized: that he had allies and love along his journey no matter they were human, feline or of a different color.
The addition of character Claude Brahms loosely ties the ‘Caitlin Diggs’ universe into this adventure as the odd scientist frequently finds a way to pop in and out of time frames and places with his vast knowledge of unseen yet tangible energy fields.
It is with respect to the scientific community that I include the latest theories on quantum physics including entanglement, charmed quarks and even Schrodinger’s cat. It is with love that I find whether we are scientist, teenager or cat we manage to find love as the universe’s most powerful adhesive. As reminded by my wife with a monikered gift just yesterday – ‘Not Alone’ rings true whether written on a t-shirt or inscribed invisibly in the heavens.
