  Acknowledgements

I say this every time I come to write the author acknowledgements for a new book, but it’s true: the list of people who have offered help and encouragement on my writing journey so far really is endless, and it would take a novel in itself to mention them all. I’d try to list everyone here regardless, but I know I’d fail miserably and miss out someone who is really very important. I just want to say that my heartfelt gratitude goes out to each and every one of you, whose involvement, whether small or large, has been invaluable and appreciated more than I can express.

It goes without saying that my family bear the brunt of my authorly mood swings, but when the dust has settled I always appreciate their love, patience and support. This year, due to lockdown restrictions, like so many other people I’ve spent a lot of time struggling to keep working while in a small house surrounded twenty-four/seven by my family, who all had their own things to do too. They’ve been truly amazing, however, as supportive and patient as ever, willing to give me space and time to do what I needed to – even when it meant they had to sacrifice space and time of their own. It’s testament to them that any of the books I’ve written during this time ever got finished at all.

I’d like to take a moment here to remember Storm Constantine of Immanion Press, who passed away this year. She gave me my first editing job, the opportunity to see my very first book in print, pushed me to follow my dream when others told me I couldn’t do it and never asked for anything in return. She was one of those rare people who was never less than herself and offered no apology for it, and was all the more wonderful for it. She championed me and so many other authors and I’ll always think of her fondly.

I also want to mention the many good friends I have made and since kept at Staffordshire University. It’s been over ten years since I graduated with a degree in English and creative writing but hardly a day goes by when I don’t think fondly of my time there.

I have to thank the remarkable team at Bookouture for their continued support, patience and amazing publishing flair, particularly Lydia Vassar-Smith – my incredible and long-suffering editor – Kim Nash, Noelle Holten, Sarah Hardy, Peta Nightingale, Alexandra Holmes, Cara Chimirri and Jessie Botterill. I know I’ll have forgotten someone else at Bookouture who I ought to be thanking, but I hope they’ll forgive me. I’ll be giving them all a big hug at the next summer bash whether they want it or not! Their belief, able assistance and encouragement mean the world to me. I truly believe I have the best team an author could ask for.

My friend Kath Hickton always gets an honourable mention for putting up with me since primary school, and Louise Coquio deserves a medal for getting me through university and suffering me ever since, likewise her lovely family. I also have to thank Mel Sherratt, who is as generous with her time and advice as she is talented, someone who is always there to cheer on her fellow authors. She did so much to help me in the early days of my career that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank her as much as she deserves.

I’d also like to shout out to Holly Martin, Tracy Bloom, Emma Davies, Jack Croxall, Carol Wyer, Clare Davidson, Angie Marsons, Sue Watson and Jaimie Admans: not only brilliant authors in their own right but hugely supportive of others. My Bookouture colleagues are all incredible of course, unfailing and generous in their support of fellow authors – life would be a lot duller without the gang! I have to thank all the brilliant and dedicated book bloggers (there are so many of you but you know who you are!) and readers, and anyone else who has championed my work, reviewed it, shared it, or simply told me that they liked it. Every one of those actions is priceless and you are all very special people. Some of you I am even proud to call friends now – and I’m looking at you in particular, Kerry Ann Parsons and Steph Lawrence!

Last but not least, I’d like to give a special mention to my lovely agent, Madeleine Milburn, and the team at the Madeleine Milburn Literary, TV & Film Agency, who always have my back.

We – both author and publisher – hope you enjoyed this book. We believe that you can become a reader at any time in your life, but we’d love your help to give the next generation a head start.

Did you know that 9% of children don’t have a book of their own in their home, rising to 13% in disadvantaged families*? We’d like to try to change that by asking you to consider the role you could play in helping to build readers of the future.

We’d love you to get involved by sharing, borrowing, reading, buying or talking about a book with a child in your life and spreading the love of reading. We want to make sure the next generation continues to have access to books, wherever they come from.
