“What causes you to be in such good cheer, brother?” Bevel asks suspiciously. I don’t blame him. Hemrock is cynical and brooding, I haven’t seen him happy and honestly that scares me.
Hemrock turns his attention back to me. “The Great Assassin is dead.”
Miriam gasps beside me.
“That’s a lie.” The words slip from my mouth. I am in deep denial. There is no way. I would know. That is probably the craziest thing I had ever thought, but for some reason I felt that if he were truly dead I would feel it. Someone like him slipping from the world would leave a trace, like the winds would blow or the clouds would roll in. A presence like Assassin’s doesn’t just disappear from this realm without affecting it somehow.
“It is not. Lemonck witnessed it with his own eyes.”
“It’s true,” The one eyed elf informs. “They are all dead. They were surrounded by an army of the Dark King’s Centaurs. I watched the blade enter the Assassin’s heart and watched him bleed out in the grass.”
Suddenly, my feet could not hold me up anymore. My heart splinters into a thousand pieces. Rightfully, I had no right to feel hurt over this news. The assassin wasn’t mine to mourn, but my head did not stop my heart from breaking.
“Oh! Did he mean anything to you, girl?” Hemrock questions with a cruel laugh. “Get them up.” He shouts to the other goblins. “We can be back in our territory by sunrise.”
I want to scream at the evil bastard, to tell him I thought he was a liar and a coward. However, I couldn’t find the fight in me anymore. I never got to apologize about what he saw with me and Rykan. I will never see his grey eyes and jaw dropping smile. I feel Miriam’s arms slip around my shoulders as my heart continues to shred. I could not explain how deep the news hurt. I’ve only known him for a short while, but it feels like longer than that. This wasn’t just the pain of a girl losing a friend or me losing a bodyguard. Something deep inside me, and I do not know where it comes from, says that with his death I’ve lost something far more important.
To be continued…..
