In quoting passages I deemed appropriate for this book, I’ve taken the liberty of updating some phraseology that was poorly discerned in all the original four copies and they are as follows: 1) The famous passage from Cannto V, often written as “Yo . . . wand jelly babies” has been revised to the far less cryptic, less contentious, and I would suggest more in keeping with the humor of the Cannto, “You want gummy bears”; and 2) the totally illegible third, fourth and fifth sentences of Cannto VII, “c . . . a ion re . . . ges. Bew . . . dw . . . g . . .ose. Her . . . pu . . . pr . . . ts,” which are usually left out altogether from most reproductions, have been revised to: “We caution with care from the ages. Beware of the dwindling repose. Here is the punch of your profits.”
