  The fer-de-lance rested on a limestone ledge under the protective shelter of moist jungle foliage behind the central window. Her buff and brown coils seemed part of the stone itself.

  As I leaned my face close to her habitat, the snake raised her head. Her yellow eyes looked into mine. I moved nearer to the warm glass. On the back wall of her terrarium I could see the indistinct image of the vision serpent rearing behind her.
