I giggled. “I’m ready.”
We congratulated Chris and Nadine again and made our exit. Andre opened my car door for me. As I got in, he dropped the car keys on the ground.
“Damn. I think they fell under the car,” he muttered.
He got on his knees and started searched for the keys.
“Got them?” I asked when a minute had gone by.
“I got them, but while I’m down here, I want to ask you a question.”
Andre reached in his pocket and pulled out something. He opened it. Nestled neatly in the folds of the small velvety jewelry box in his hand was a gorgeous diamond ring.
“It might be in bad taste to propose to you at this event, but I don’t give a shit. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I love you. Will you marry me, K—”
Before he could say the rest of my name, I kissed him, nodded, and said, “Yes,” as tears ran down my face.
He slipped the ring onto my finger.
“I love you so much,” I said, kissing him again.
There was no man I’d rather be with. Some women never found men that loved them. In my lifetime, I had been lucky to find two men that loved me unconditionally. Over time, I had learned what I truly needed versus what I wanted. I didn’t know if this made sense, but I was sorry for what I had done to Chris, but I didn’t regret it. In a way, our drama had changed us both for the better.
Seeing Chris at the club with Nadine had proved to me that he had learned from his mistakes with me and now wanted to do an activity his girl liked, even if it wasn’t a favorite of his. And I had learned so much from our experience too. For instance, I had learned that I needed to stop comparing the man I had to everyone else, and that it was important for me to appreciate my man for who he was and for what he did for me. And I had learned that I needed to communicate better and be more understanding and less selfish.
It had been a long time coming, but I’d finally found love and happiness.
