Tempting the Billionaire: Falling for my brother's best friend (The Hartford Brothers Book 1) Page 9

A little while later we are arriving at an exclusive club in the city where we are let in via a secret door and password. We are taken up to the VIP section which is situated high above the club. It’s packed downstairs and is filled with the people who were waiting on the streets to get in. We are ushered over to where the girls are seated by a man dressed in black.

“You’re back.” Rhys grabs his sister and gives her a hug.

“I know. It feels like it’s been ages since I’ve seen you.” Audrey seems rather tipsy, as she wobbles on her sky-high heels. I shouldn’t be looking Audrey over, but I can’t help it. She’s dressed in a fluorescent mini dress that covers nothing of her incredible body. Her blonde hair is pulled up high in a ponytail and her make up looks rather dramatic compared to what she normally wears.

“She’s looking good, isn’t she?” Rainn slides up beside me, looking me over. She has a weird look on her face. How much have these girls had to drink?

“Yes. She looks happy. Guessing she had a great holiday,” I say, keeping my comments light and simple.

“Oh, she most certainly did.” Rainn smirks as if she knows something I don’t. I hope she had fun with other people, it’s not my place to interfere with that.

“I’m glad she had fun,” I answer her. Rainn frowns and moves closer to me.

“You sure about that?” she questions me.

“Yeah, I’m sure,” I tell her, wondering what she’s trying to imply

“I saw you in the park. You’re not fooling anyone.” And with that she disappears into the club leaving me slack jawed by her comment. Shit! She saw me kiss Audrey, that’s what she’s getting at.

“Hey brother.” Remi almost pushes me over into a table as he surprises me.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I ask, not meaning for my question to come out as such an accusation.

“What’s crawled up your butt?” Remi gives me a dirty look.

“Sorry, just have stuff on my mind. Why are you here?” I ask him normally this time.

“The girls texted me and I couldn’t say no to a party.” He grins.

“Remi, come dance with me,” Rainn calls from the sideline. She is giving my brother flirtatious looks. I look over to where Nell is seated with Rhys and Audrey, and she is shooting daggers at Rainn. Huh? What the hell is going on here?

“You better not be messing around with Rainn?” I ask as I hit my brother in the chest with the back of my hand, hard.

“No. We’re just friends. Strictly friends,” he answers quickly. “But it is making a certain someone jealous though.” My eyes fall on where Nell is sitting not looking happy at all.

“Be careful. You’re playing with fire, and this could all blow up in your face,” I warn him.

“I know what I’m doing, brother. Don’t worry about me.” He grins and strides over to where Rainn is dancing and joins her. Nell stands up abruptly and disappears into the crowd, Audrey’s not far behind her. My brother’s an idiot.

“What’s the matter with you?” Rhys nudges me with his elbow. “You have a permanent scowl across your face.”

“Do I?” I question. trying to sound surprised but in reality, I know the exact reason why I have a scowl on my face and it’s all because of Audrey. I know I said earlier that Audrey’s a single girl she can do what she wants but having to sit and watch her giggle and flirt with some soccer star right in front of me has slowly driven me insane. My brother’s fucked off to who knows where, as has Nell. And I pray that they haven’t gone home together because he shouldn’t be jeopardizing his career for Nell. “Not in the mood I guess.” Audrey’s laughter pulls my attention from Rhys, and I watch her stroke the guy’s chest as he nuzzles her neck.

“Don’t know what my sister sees in someone like that.” Rhys follows my line of sight and shakes his head. “I wish she would date a guy like you.” I choke on my drink at his comment. What in the hell? “Obviously not you, but someone with a good job, rich, good looking, you know,” Rhys explains to me.

“Aw, you think I’m good looking,” I tease him, hoping to distract him from my mini freak out.

“Fuck you.” He flips me off. “You know what I mean. She keeps going for these flashy young guys and they are nothing but ego and testosterone. They don’t deserve someone as nice as Audrey.” Can’t argue with him there. I throw back my drink and excuse myself from the conversation and head to the bathroom.

Someone then grabs me as soon as I walk out of the men’s bathroom and pulls me around the corner. Audrey? I realize when I look down at who grabbed me. Bright blue eyes land on my lips, as she bites her own.

“I can’t stop thinking about our kiss,” Audrey confesses to me.

“Aud, you’re drunk,” I tell her, noticing the wobble as she stands against the wall.

“I know, Stirling.” She gives me a pained look. “But it’s the only way I have the balls to do this.” As she grabs my face and pulls me to her, my lips open of their own accord as my hands hit the wall on either side of her face. Tiny moans fall from her lips and the sound does me in. I know I should be pushing her away. I know I should be telling her to stop because she isn’t in her right mind in this moment, but I don’t. Instead, my tongue tangles with hers as my hand falls to rest on her hip as I take everything she is giving me.

“Yes,” Audrey hisses as my fingers grip her hip tightly pulling her flush against me, hoping she feels how hard she is making me.

“I shouldn’t be doing this,” I confess as I rest my forehead against hers.

“Please, don’t second guess this moment, Stirling.” Those bright blue eyes stare into mine. “Please, don’t be a gentleman.” Dammit, Audrey as my dick tightens inside my pants. “Give me this moment in the darkness. Just the two of us.”

  “We shouldn’t.”

“I know. But I can’t stop thinking about your lips. And I know I shouldn’t be because of who you are. I needed to know that, that it was real in the park. That you weren’t kissing me out of pity or something.”

“I kissed you because I was being a selfish bastard, Aud. I wanted to know what you tasted like.” I’m going to hell, might as well continue the ride now.

“And?” Those blue doe eyes blink slowly in anticipation of my comment.

“I can’t get your taste off my lips,” I confess to her as I capture them again. This time Audrey wraps her arms around my neck and pulls me closer to her. I let my hand run down over her body as I press her hard into the wall. My hand runs down over her peachy ass and brings up her leg to rest around my hip. Exposing her pussy to me. I press myself hard against her which makes her moan.

“We don’t have much time before someone misses me,” Audrey warns me. Right, then I better make this quick. My hand slips between her thighs and runs along the sheer fabric of her next to nothing underwear. Whimpers fall from Audrey’s lips.

“If only we had more time.” I press my knuckle against her pussy. Audrey hums. Then the sound of a door slamming pulls us from the moment. Damn it. I let her leg fall and help fix up her dress.

“Don’t look at me like that.” Audrey’s eyes narrow on me,

  “Like what?”

She pushes me away from her, and I stumble back putting distance between us.

“The instant regret I see plastered across your face.” Audrey’s blue eyes burn with fire, and they are directed squarely at me. She pushes me again and disappears around the corner and back into the party. Leaving me with a hard on the size of Mt. Rushmore and a sinking feeling in my stomach.

Once I compose myself, I head back out into the VIP area and a sucker punch hits my square in the stomach when I see Audrey laughing and joking with the soccer player like what happened moments ago was a dream. She doesn’t even look my way when I join Rhys back at our table.

“What took you so long?” Rhys asks as I join him.

“Got distracted by someone,” I mumble to him.

“Really? Where is she?” Rhys looks around think
ing this mystery woman might jump out from behind me.

“She’s with someone else,” I tell him. Rhys eyes grow wide.

“Plenty more women out there,” he tells me. If only he knew who I was talking about, he would not be so nice about it all.

  Audrey

When I get back to the table Rainn and her man have disappeared and the guy I was speaking to was still there waiting for me. I couldn’t very well leave him there even if all I wanted to do was run and hide. I know I should be concentrating on what Julio or Diego is saying to me. I can’t remember what he told me, but I can’t stop thinking about Stirling. The way he kissed me. The way his hand slid between my thighs. And then the way once the spell was broken, he instantly regretted it. The look on his face tore at my core and it was like my eighteenth birthday all over again. I don’t know if I can fake my interest in this soccer guy anymore.

“Look it’s been…” my words are cut off when I realize who is standing in front of us. David. What in the hell is he doing here? “David?”

“Who the fuck is he?” His face is like thunder as he looks at the soccer player.

“Who the hell are you?” the soccer player reacts, puffing his chest out.

“I’m her fucking boyfriend,” he tells him. The guy turns to me and looks a little shocked by David’s statement.

“No, he’s not. He’s my ex,” I explain to him.

“Then you need to jog on, mate,” the soccer player tells him.

“Like fuck I do. I’ve come back for Audrey.” He slams his hands on the table rattling all our glasses. This catches the attention of Rhys and Stirling who are now looking over at us from their table. I watch as Rhys hits Stirling and mouths something to him and points to where David is standing. This isn’t going to end well at all.

“David, you need to leave.” I try and get him to move on.

“Not without you, Aud. Why won’t you talk to me?” Is he thick in the head? Why the hell would I want to speak to him after he made a sex tape with my best friend.

“You got caught sleeping with my best friend, that’s why.”

“Ooh.” The soccer player chuckles beside me.

“You heard my sister, leave her alone.” Rhys stands to one side of the table while Stirling stands at the other.

“Not until she talks to me. She owes me that!” David shouts at me.

“She owes you nothing.” Rhys stands up to his full height and towers over David. “Now go back to whatever hole you came from and leave her alone.”

“Fuck you. Don’t you know who I am?” David tries to posture himself as if he’s some big man on campus which he isn’t.

“I don’t give a shit if you’re the President of the Unites States. You’re going to leave my sister alone or…” Rhys doesn’t finish his threat.

“Or what, big man.” David smirks itching for Rhys to do something.

“I’m sorry, I think it might be best for me to go,” I tell them all as I gather my things. I’m hoping by me leaving the situation, it will settle everything down because the last thing I need is some bust up in the club and the media catching wind of this. I don’t need any more media attention. I try and shuffle out of the seat, but Stirling is blocking my way. He looks down at me and those green eyes tell me I’m not leaving any time soon.

“David, please. It’s over. I think you should leave,” I tell him, hoping I can talk some sense into him.

“I fucked up, Aud,” David explains. No shit he fucked up.

“Why did you do it?” If he isn’t going to leave I might as well try and get some closure.

“I don’t know.” He runs his hand through his hair.

“You don’t know why you fucked my best friend? Or have been fucking her our entire relationship?” I ask, staring at him. Tell me the truth, you piece of shit. I need to know.

“I never felt good enough for you, Aud.” He finally breaks down. “The whole society scene, the trust funds, the multi-million-dollar homes, the private planes, your profile.” He starts spouting off things that have nothing to do with us dating.

“That has nothing to do with me and everything to do with your own insecurities, David.” How dare he blame me for his cheating.

“How could I ever compete with your billionaire friends. At least Dior made me feel like a man,” David spits at me. His words are like a punch to the gut. I can feel tears begin to well in my eyes, my throat tightening up and my face turning red I’m so angry and embarrassed. I need to get out of here, and panic begins to creep up my spine.

“Get the hell out of my way, Stirling,” I hiss at him, pushing him out of the way as I jump out of the booth.

“Hey, I’m not done talking to you.” David grabs me roughly around the arm, his fingers digging into my skin. The shock of his action makes me scream and then next thing I know Rhys is on David.

“Shit,” Stirling curses as he tries to haul my brother off my ex. Next thing I know security is coming along and breaking them all up.

“Stirling, take Aud home!” Rhys screams at his best friend as security pulls him away. David is cursing and carrying on screaming at my brother that he’s going to sue him and take him for everything.

“Come on, Aud.” Stirling places a protective arm around my shoulders and ushers me out of the VIP area.

“What about Rhys? I can’t leave him there.” I’m frantically looking around to see if he’s okay.

“I promise your brother is going to be okay.” Stirling tries to reassure me. He pushes the door open, and we are thrust out upon the street. Stirling spots Rhys town car and ushers me toward it. He opens the door and helps me inside before closing it and getting in on the other. It’s not until I’m sitting down that I realize I’m shaking.

“Here.” Stirling takes off his blazer and throws it around my shoulders, his warmth radiates through me, and I discreetly inhale his cologne on his blazer.

“I’m worried about Rhys,” I say, turning to look at Stirling for support.

“I promise you; he’s going to be okay.” Stirling rests a reassuring hand on my exposed thigh and instantly sets it on fire.

“What the hell happened?” I ask shaking my head a little stunned by it all.

“Guessing David didn’t like you blocking him.” Stirling gives me a smirk. I shouldn’t laugh but it makes me giggle. I rest my head onto Stirling’s shoulder as our car makes its way through the London streets. My lids begin to feel heavy with each mile back to Rhys home. So much so I’m jolted awake as the car stops.

“We’re home.” I nod sleepily. “Want me to carry you?” Stirling asks.

Waving his concern away, I reply, “No. I’m fine. I can make it to my room, myself.” As I step out of the car and trip over the gutter and land on my knees, grazing them. Urgh. Could this night get any worse? Stirling rushes around and helps me back up but thankfully he doesn’t say anything about my mishap. His strong-arm wraps around my waist and helps me into Rhys home.

“Want me to get the first aid kit?” He asks as we pass the kitchen.

  “I’m fine.”

“Do you know how many germs are on the streets of London?” Stirling raises a brow in my direction.

“Has to be much less than New York and I’ve fallen down many times there. I’m probably immune to it all.”

“Let me check, so that I can rest easy tonight knowing you won’t get some flesh-eating disease and wake up in the morning with no legs.” He grins at me.

“Um, morbid much?” I say chuckling at him.

“Jump up.” He taps his hand on the kitchen counter for me to get up. Fine, I’ll let Stirling play nurse if it makes him feel better. And secretly my knees are stinging. He goes into the pantry and pulls out the first aid kit and places it beside me on the counter. Then opens the white box up and pulls out the antiseptic and some cotton balls then begins dabbing my bloodied knees with the cotton balls. Ouch, that stings. Stirling works diligently at cleaning up my knees.
/>   “All fixed.” He grins admiring his handy work.

“Wish fixing my life was as easy,” I muse.

“You know David is an asshole, don’t you?” Stirling tells me as he packs up the first aid kit.

“Yep. Guess I know how to pick them.” Shrugging my shoulders feeling a little defeated over the whole situation. “What I don’t understand is why did he come back? Why did he track me down to London?”

“He realizes he fucked up and that he won’t ever get anyone better than you.” Stirling explains to me, while putting the first aid kit back into the pantry.

“Urgh. I have sucky taste in men then.” I shake my head. What did I ever see in David I’ll never understand?

“You know you don’t need a man in your life, right?” Stirling questions me.

Frowning at him, I answer, “Yes,” wondering what’s he getting at.

“I know the world we live in can make women think that the only way they will ever make it in society is with the right named man on their arm. I’m telling you, you don’t.” Aw. That was a sweet thing to say.

“Thanks. I grew up with the threat that if I ruined my reputation no man from a good family will ever want me.” Rolling my eyes at the antiquated nonsense the society world thrusts on to us younger women.

“Just so you know I don’t come from a good family.” Stirling gives me a wink.

“Oh my God, Audrey, are you okay?” Nell screams down the hall. Stirling moves away from me, putting distance between us again. The girls come rushing in and hug me furiously.

“Rhys told us what happened. I can’t believe David did that.” Rainn leans on the kitchen counter beside me. Her eyes lower to my knees and notices how messed up they are. “What happened here?” She looks between Stirling and me.

“Just tripped on the gutter,” I tell him. Then I notice my brother and quickly jump down from the counter and rush over to him and pull him into a bear hug. “Don’t you ever fight for me ever again,” I tell him. Rhys laughs and squeezes me tightly.
