Promise of a Highlander
Page 23
Ross gasped out her name, gave one final thrust as he too reached his climax, shuddering as his body found its release, before collapsing atop her, his forehead resting against her shoulder.
Lia clasped him to her, holding him close as slowly, so slowly, the sensations began to ebb and she came back to her senses. She didn’t want to let him go. She wanted to stay here forever, just the two of them, their bodies joined, only skin and heat between them, but finally Ross lifted his head to look at her.
His hair was tousled, a thin sheet of sweat marring his forehead. His amber eyes, so alive with intense emotion, held her. She couldn’t look away.
“I love ye,” he said hoarsely. “Have I told ye that yet?”
She laughed lightly, joy blowing through her like a gale. God help her, what had she done to deserve this man?
“I think you might have mentioned it but it doesn’t hurt to hear it again.”
“Then I will keep saying it for the rest of our lives. Of that, I promise ye.”
He rolled away from her, grabbed his plaid, and threw it over them both. She snuggled against him, her head on his shoulder, one leg thrown across his hips. Around them, the night deepened. They were alone with only the crashing of the waves for company.
Lia lifted herself onto her elbow and looked around. The Devil’s Bridge was a strange place for them to spend their wedding night. And yet, what better place was there? This is where it had all begun, where Ross took his first step on that path that would lead him to Lia. It was where it had finally ended. And now, tonight, it was where their new life would begin.
She took a deep, contented breath, feeling the night air settle into her lungs. Ross twined his fingers through hers.
“Are ye happy, love?”
“Happy?” she said. “That’s a bland word if ever I heard one. There just aren’t the words to tell you how I feel. Should I show you instead?”
He laughed as she straddled him, the sound rumbling deep in his chest. “Aye, love, mayhap ye should.”
She leaned down and kissed him. The moon was starting to set but that didn’t matter. They had the starlight and the night was young yet. She had plenty of time to show him just exactly how she felt.
With a smile, Lia got started.
